NEW DELHI: Japan PM Takaichi Sanae is likely to visit India next month for a summit meeting with her counterpart Narendra Modi. While a confirmation from Indian authorities is still awaited, Japanese media reported that the summit meeting with PM Modi will take place in Assam.”Govt sources say arrangements are underway for Takaichi to visit the northeastern state to hold her second in-person meeting with Modi,” said a report by NHK.The two had earlier met on the margins of the G20 summit last year in Johannesburg, agreeing that strong ties between the two countries are indispensable for regional and global peace, prosperity, and stability. The visit to Assam will be significant as both countries, under the India-Japan Act East Forum, work together on projects for economic modernisation of India’s northeast region. NEW DELHI: As UK foreign secretary Yvette Cooper visited India Thursday, both sides announced the launch of a Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory, marking, as an Indian readout said, a significant milestone in their growing partnership on critical minerals and supply chain resilience.In another significant takeaway, India and UK also signed an MoU for setting up a Regional Maritime Security Centre of Excellence, which will help Indian Ocean states build capacity to address non-traditional maritime security threats.Cooper also met her counterpart S Jaishankar and called on PM Modi. The two sides reviewed ongoing progress in bilateral cooperation focusing on trade, technology, supply chains, defence, climate, education and people-to-people ties.Jaishankar told Cooper in the meeting that the two countries are well-positioned to construct a new future-oriented and mutually beneficial partnership on the back of their newly firmed-up comprehensive trade deal and the defence industrial roadmap. He also said in a post on X later that they spoke about new opportunities in clean energy, AI and critical minerals while exchanging views on global developments, including in Ukraine, West Asia and the Indo-Pacific.Before her meeting with Jaishankar, the UK foreign secretary called on PM Modi. “Appreciated the deepening of the India-UK partnership in recent times that has unlocked unprecedented growth opportunities for both our countries. NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that Washington and New Delhi will soon reach a trade agreement.While talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that India had benefited for years from the trade imbalance, but the situation has now changed.“I like your Prime Minister a lot. He is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship,” Trump said.“For years, India took advantage of the United States. They charged us tremendous tariffs and paid nothing. Now it is the exact reverse and we are making a lot of money with India. But we will get to a deal,” he added.This comes amid ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen economic ties and address long-standing trade issues.India and the United States wrapped up four days of trade negotiations in New Delhi between June 1 and June 4, with officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), led by its chief negotiator, holding discussions with Indian counterparts on issues such as trade in goods, customs procedures, trade facilitation, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation.Both sides termed the talks constructive and said efforts were underway to conclude a mutually beneficial interim trade pact, while negotiations on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) continue in parallel.Momentum towards a deal has strengthened in recent weeks. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the negotiations were nearing completion, with only a limited number of issues still unresolved. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has similarly indicated that most matters have been settled, with discussions now centred on finalising the remaining details before the first phase of the agreement is unveiled.Even as talks advance, concerns persist over a potential move by the Trump administration to impose an additional 12.5% tariff on imports from 60 economies, including India.A separate USTR proposal could further complicate negotiations. The review, conducted under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974, covers 60 economies and focuses on concerns surrounding imports allegedly linked to forced labour.Under the proposal, economies that have introduced restrictions on such imports could face tariffs of 10%, while those without comparable measures may be subjected to duties of up to 12.5%. India, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh and Vietnam are among the economies under review.US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said countries that do not adequately address imports associated with forced labour create an uneven playing field for American workers. NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that Washington and New Delhi will soon reach a trade agreement.While talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that India had benefited for years from the trade imbalance, but the situation has now changed.“I like your Prime Minister a lot. He is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship,” Trump said.“For years, India took advantage of the United States. They charged us tremendous tariffs and paid nothing. Now it is the exact reverse and we are making a lot of money with India. But we will get to a deal,” he added.This comes amid ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen economic ties and address long-standing trade issues.India and the United States wrapped up four days of trade negotiations in New Delhi between June 1 and June 4, with officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), led by its chief negotiator, holding discussions with Indian counterparts on issues such as trade in goods, customs procedures, trade facilitation, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation.Both sides termed the talks constructive and said efforts were underway to conclude a mutually beneficial interim trade pact, while negotiations on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) continue in parallel.Momentum towards a deal has strengthened in recent weeks. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the negotiations were nearing completion, with only a limited number of issues still unresolved. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has similarly indicated that most matters have been settled, with discussions now centred on finalising the remaining details before the first phase of the agreement is unveiled.Even as talks advance, concerns persist over a potential move by the Trump administration to impose an additional 12.5% tariff on imports from 60 economies, including India.A separate USTR proposal could further complicate negotiations. The review, conducted under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974, covers 60 economies and focuses on concerns surrounding imports allegedly linked to forced labour.Under the proposal, economies that have introduced restrictions on such imports could face tariffs of 10%, while those without comparable measures may be subjected to duties of up to 12.5%. India, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh and Vietnam are among the economies under review.US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said countries that do not adequately address imports associated with forced labour create an uneven playing field for American workers. NEW DELHI: SC has ruled that courts must not allow litigation to prolong a decayed and decomposed marriage, which is a deeply personal and social partnership built on mutual respect, as that would create a “foul sociological, psychological and mental hollowness” in life.Using its exclusive powers under Art 142 of the Constitution to dissolve the marriage between two govt doctors living separately for 15 years, SC said, “Marriage, in its legal and constitutional dimension, can never be reduced to a mere contractual intersection of individual rights, nor can it be viewed through the narrow lens of a petition for conjugal rights.”Marriage is a personal and social partnership built on mutual respect, shared expectations and equal responsibility, designed for a couple to weave a tapestry of interdependence that demands balancing of interests, a bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and A G Masih said.Writing for the court, Justice Masih said, “Conjugal rights do not exist in a vacuum; they are the structural counterparts to conjugal duties.
