NEW DELHI: Indicating that a person making objectionable statements may have to face prosecution in different states where FIRs have been filed, Supreme Court Monday turned down the plea of Johar Chhattisgarh Party (JCP) president seeking the clubbing of FIRs filed for his remarks against the Sindhi community and its deity. To ease his concern, the court asked him in a lighter vein to enjoy visiting different states free of cost in the company of state police.”You should keep your tongue in cheek,” a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said at the outset of hearing.Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, appearing for Amit Baghel, while admitting that his client’s statements were unpalatable, submitted that they were made in the heat of the moment and not to intentionally hurt sentiments. He said that as five FIRs had been filed in the state of Chhattisgarh, the cases registered in other states should be transferred there.But the bench remained firm in its stand of not interfering in the matter and said, “State police would come and take you to their states. Enjoy travelling all over the country.”Dave, however, stressed that it was becoming a trend to lodge multiple FIRs across the country to harass a person and pointed out that the apex court had earlier ordered the clubbing of FIRs in such cases.More than a dozen FIRs have been filed against Baghel, including in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.The Sindhi community had taken to the streets to protest the controversial statements, and they burnt an effigy of Baghel’s and submitted a memorandum addressed to the President, Prime Minister and chief minister, demanding that a sedition case be filed against him and his party be banned. The community alleged that Baghel had called the Sindhi community ‘Pakistani’.
