NEW DELHI: For the first time since the Covid pandemic, fatalities on national highways (NHs) declined last year, even as overall road deaths rose in India. Govt data submitted in Lok Sabha last week shows that deaths on NHs, including Centre-run expressways, fell by 4.1% to 62,122 in 2025 from 64,772 in 2024.Among states and UTs, 20 recorded a decline in fatalities on NHs while 15 reported an increase. Lakshadweep, with no national highways, was the only one to record ‘zero NH fatalities’ since 2022. Data shows UP registered the steepest decline in NH deaths, with fatalities dropping from 9,560 in 2024 to 7,573 in 2025. Madhya Pradesh also reported a significant reduction, from 4,644 to 3,610, along with Punjab, which logged a sharp fall from 1,562 to 1,022 during the same period. NEW DELHI: After a paper leak exposed weak links in India’s biggest entrance examination, National Testing Agency (NTA) is moving to put its premises, confidential records and examination material under round-the-clock watch. The agency has floated a tender estimated at Rs 7.5 crore to hire a security firm for its headquarters at Minto Road, regional office in Okhla and other notified locations.Issued on July 25, the tender is part of a procurement exercise covering security, housekeeping and examination-grade printing. Together, the bids signal an attempt to tighten controls across the examination chain — from printing and storage to access control and protection of digital infrastructure. The security contract will initially run for two years and may be extended twice by a year each. Bids can be submitted until 3 pm on Aug 17. The printing-services tender closes on Aug 20.The selected agency will watch over NTA employees, visitors, premises, confidential examination material, server rooms, strong rooms, warehouses, record rooms and other sensitive facilities. It will regulate entry and exit, verify staff and visitors, maintain logs and ensure that “only authorised persons enter restricted areas”.The security apparatus will include door-frame and hand-held metal detectors, GPS-enabled guard patrol tracking, biometric attendance and digital incident-reporting systems.NTA has moved away from choosing a bidder mainly on cost basis. Citing the “sensitive nature of NTA’s examination ecosystem and confidentiality requirements”, it has adopted the quality-and-cost based selection model. Technical capability will carry 70% weightage and the financial bid 30%. NEW DELHI: High drama unfolded at the New Delhi address of Independent MP Pappu Yadav Sunday after a man allegedly threw a slipper at him and another allegedly brandished a knife when he was holding a news conference.The accused, identified by sources as Sumit and Happy Sharma, are from Bulandshahr in UP. Police have detained Sumit (34), and are probing Happy’s role. They are verifying if Happy was the one who threw a slipper at the MP, and if Sumit, who runs a hardware shop, brandished a knife at the event.The attack is believed to be linked to Yadav’s recent skit outside Parliament over the alleged donation theft at the Ayodhya Ram temple. On July 31, Opposition MPs staged a skit outside Parliament to protest on the issue, during which Yadav, dressed as a priest, was seen putting donation money in his pocket. MP Bansuri Swaraj complained to police Saturday on the matter.Sunday’s videos show someone throwing a slipper at Yadav. Moments later, chaos erupts and chairs fly as supporters rush to overpower the men, and police step in. Members of Yadav’s team displayed before reporters the slipper and a knife which, they alleged, were used in the attack.Yadav alleged that it was a planned attempt on his life. “When the knife was drawn to attack, our supporters and associates tried to restrain the assailant. NEW DELHI: Improving court infrastructure and integration of technology in the justice delivery system with an outlay of more than Rs 9,800 crore since 2011 have had little impact on disposal of cases pending for several decades. More than 10,000 cases are pending in the Supreme Court for over 10 years — including 558 pending for over 20 years, and 26 cases for 30 years. In the 25 high courts across the country, over 80,000 cases are pending for over three decades.In a written response to a question in Parliament last week, law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal put the onus of disposal of cases on the judiciary, which has not fixed a time frame for their disposal.He further said: “Timely disposal of cases in courts depends on several factors which, inter-alia, include availability of adequate number of judges and judicial officers, supporting court staff and physical infrastructure, complexity of facts involved, nature of evidence, cooperation of stakeholders viz bar, investigation agencies, witnesses, litigants and proper application of rules and procedures.”While the apex court has been prompt in appointing judges against vacancies, the situation in 25 high courts and subordinate courts is not the same. The HCs currently have 341 vacancies of judges against a sanctioned strength of 1,122. The HC collegium comprises the chief justice and two senior-most judges of the high court. For the SC, the recommendation for the appointment of judges is initiated by the Chief Justice of India.“Arrears Committees have been set up in all 25 high courts and the district courts to clear cases pending for more than five years. The govt has also enacted the New Criminal Laws 2023, Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2018, Commercial Courts (Amendment) Act, 2018, Specific Relief (Amendment) Act, 2018 with a view to reduce pendency,” Meghwal said.Get the latest India News and Live updates.
