NEW DELHI: Five Air Force personnel were killed in an AN-32 transport aircraft crash in Assam on Saturday morning, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said in a statement.”The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat, Assam. Sqn Ldr Prashant Singh, Flt Lt Shubham Kumar, Sgt Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat and Agniveervayu Danish Alam made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. IAF extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and stands firmly with them in this hour of grief,” the IAF said in its latest post on X updating about the crash.Giving the details about the crash, the IAF said the “aircraft met with an accident during a routine sortie today at approximately 1000h at Jorhat, Assam. Crash site management and initial enquiries are on at this time.”Antonov An-32 is a twin-engine military transport aircraft that serves as the backbone of the IAF’s medium-lift fleet. The IAF currently operates a fleet of approximately 100 An-32 aircraft.Originally designed and built in the erstwhile Soviet Union at the request of the IAF, it is highly capable in remote and high-altitude regions. Powered by two highly elevated turboprop engines, the transport aircraft can carry up to 7,500 kg of cargo, 50 passengers or 42 paratroopers. It is being used by the IAF for tactical airlifting, troop transport, and remote-area resupply.The IAF is planning to replace the aging An-32 fleet with newer medium transport aircraft like Airbus C-295, whose first made-in-India aircraft recently completed its maiden test flight from the final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat.Get the latest India news and live updates. Four days ago, Nalsar confirmed it had, in keeping with tradition, invited CJI Kant to be chief guest at the ceremony that is likely to be held at the end of Aug or in Sept.Of Nalsar’s 1,400-odd students, more than 400 had opposed CJI Kant as chief guest, citing his remarks during a hearing on petitions related to the students’ march to Parliament on July 20 and alleged police excesses.The CJI-led bench is seized of a bunch of petitions seeking independent inquiry into the alleged police excesses on students, use of pellet guns and facial recognition devices for profiling students in alleged breach of right to privacy.It has also accepted a petition by the relatives of injured police personnel seeking strict action against “criminal elements” who infiltrated the students’ agitation and caused widespread violence and damage to public property while abusing PM and other constitutional functionaries.The students appeared to have taken umbrage at the CJI-led bench declining to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged police excesses against protesters when an advocate, without filing a proper petition, made the request on July 22, claiming he had video footage of the same. An SC bench said the evidence for an accidental drowning was more plausible than homicide. NEW DELHI: Observing that the human mind can sometimes act foolishly, especially in the face of unpredictable adversity, Supreme Court has said that such behaviour cannot be the sole basis of conviction and acquitted two men who had been held guilty of killing their friend.They were convicted by trial court and high court because their friend drowned in a river in their presence and instead of trying to rescue him, they left the spot and went to watch a movie, actions which were held as evidence of their culpability.Gujarat high court held that their behaviour was proof that they had killed the friend, and it was not a case of drowning in the river, sentencing them to life imprisonment.Setting aside the order of trial court and high court, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran said there was no evidence to prove that it was a case of murder and held that the deceased had drowned accidentally.”The accused are guilty of having fled from the spot and not having attempted to rescue the drowning person by crying out for help. Their conduct of having gone for a movie after witnessing their friend drowning, though reprehensible, cannot be found to be an incriminating circumstance, to establish murder rather than drowning. The hypothesis of innocence is crystal clear, and circumstances indicate an accident and not a premeditated murder,” the bench said.Disagreeing with the findings of the HC, the bench said, “We also have to notice the high court’s presumption that no person who saw his friend drowning would go to a movie or would take the trouble of bringing back empty soda bottles to the shop from where they purchased it. If such a presumption is accepted then it can be presumed that even after a premeditated murder, the accused would not conduct themselves in that manner.””The human mind, as has often been held by this court, is at the same time fickle, manipulative and imaginative and the actions, the result of a deprived or a foolish mindset, especially in the face of adversities, cannot be predicted. The subsequent conduct on which the high court found possible the prosecution story of murder rather than of drowning, in this case we are unable to accept. An SC bench said the evidence for an accidental drowning was more plausible than homicide. NEW DELHI: Observing that the human mind can sometimes act foolishly, especially in the face of unpredictable adversity, Supreme Court has said that such behaviour cannot be the sole basis of conviction and acquitted two men who had been held guilty of killing their friend.They were convicted by trial court and high court because their friend drowned in a river in their presence and instead of trying to rescue him, they left the spot and went to watch a movie, actions which were held as evidence of their culpability.Gujarat high court held that their behaviour was proof that they had killed the friend, and it was not a case of drowning in the river, sentencing them to life imprisonment.Setting aside the order of trial court and high court, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran said there was no evidence to prove that it was a case of murder and held that the deceased had drowned accidentally.”The accused are guilty of having fled from the spot and not having attempted to rescue the drowning person by crying out for help. Their conduct of having gone for a movie after witnessing their friend drowning, though reprehensible, cannot be found to be an incriminating circumstance, to establish murder rather than drowning. The hypothesis of innocence is crystal clear, and circumstances indicate an accident and not a premeditated murder,” the bench said.Disagreeing with the findings of the HC, the bench said, “We also have to notice the high court’s presumption that no person who saw his friend drowning would go to a movie or would take the trouble of bringing back empty soda bottles to the shop from where they purchased it. If such a presumption is accepted then it can be presumed that even after a premeditated murder, the accused would not conduct themselves in that manner.””The human mind, as has often been held by this court, is at the same time fickle, manipulative and imaginative and the actions, the result of a deprived or a foolish mindset, especially in the face of adversities, cannot be predicted. The subsequent conduct on which the high court found possible the prosecution story of murder rather than of drowning, in this case we are unable to accept. NEW DELHI: An ED investigation into a Kolkata-based aviation company has found that the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress allegedly funded Rs 160 crore from the party’s coffers to a little-known firm, Carewell Aviation India Pvt Ltd, to buy an Embraer jet and an Agusta VIP helicopter, which it subsequently rented out to TMC for Rs 187 crore.Sources said the money laundering probe was focused on TMC providing an interest-free security deposit of Rs 88.5 crore to the aviation company, which had no funds to buy the jet and the chopper it then gave to the party on rent. As soon as it received the security deposit, Carewell Aviation transferred it to its offshore entity, Carewell Flyjet IFSC Pvt Ltd, registered in Gujarat’s Gift City, treated as foreign territory, for further purchase of the jet and the helicopter.Another fund transfer of over Rs 16 crore from Cayman Island and related to the deal is under investigation.TMC was required to pay Rs 186.9 crore, exclusive of GST, for using the jet over 72 months and the chopper for 56 months. Although it did not fully utilise the minimum guaranteed flying hours under the charter agreement, the party went on to hire aircraft and helicopters from other companies during this period (2021-26) for a sum of Rs 149 crore, sources said.When contacted, a TMC source said, “Since the matter is sub judice, we do not want to comment.”The “suspicious” nature of transactions has led ED to delve into the issue of why TMC paid an interest-free security deposit of Rs 88.5 crore when it had to pay charges for renting the aircraft and helicopter. The agreement provided that TMC pay a minimum monthly charge of Rs 90 lakh for the aircraft and Rs 60 lakh for the helicopter.Carewell Aviation came into being only a few months after TMC returned to office for the third time after the April 2021 assembly elections. Then, after losing the assembly polls in 2026, TMC paid three months advance rental to the company to cover the period till Sept 2026: something that the agency says is contrary to the norm.Sources said ED has questioned directors of Carewell Aviation over these transactions and recorded their statements on issues such as why it charged TMC Rs 16.5 lakh per flying hour for the jet and when it billed others, who had not helped it with something as crucial as a security deposit, a much lower amount of Rs 7.6 lakh per hour for flying Embraer.Investigations also showed, sources said, that TMC paid Rs 75 lakh per flying hour to another charter service, Windborne Aviation, for hiring a Falcon 2000 aircraft. TMC used the Falcon aircraft for only about 11-12 flying hours but paid Rs 9.1 crore, which was roughly Rs 75.7 lakh per flying hour.According to sources, the money trail showed that over Rs 160 crore was transferred to Carewell Aviation and its group entities between July 2021 and June 2026 for “charter services” for the Embraer aircraft and the Agusta chopper.
