NEW DELHI: Deceased gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Abaan was killed on Thursday after his speeding car collided with a divider in Jhansi.His friend Sonu also died in the accident, the Jhansi SSP confirmed. According to police, all five occupants were travelling in a Hyundai Creta from Prayagraj towards Jhansi when the accident took place.The accident comes years after a series of violent incidents involving members of Atiq Ahmed’s family, including the deaths of his son Asad Ahmed, brother and Atiq himself.Asad killed in UP STF encounterOn April 13, 2023, Atiq Ahmed’s 19-year-old son Asad Ahmed and his alleged associate Ghulam were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) near Jhansi.Both Asad and Ghulam carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were wanted in connection with the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal.Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24, 2023.The suspects in the case included Asad and four others, Armaan, Ghulam, Guddu Muslim and Sabir. On April 13, 2023, Atiq Ahmed’s 19-year-old son Asad Ahmed and his alleged associate Ghulam were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) near Jhansi.Both Asad and Ghulam carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. Bombay HC convicts Tarun Tejpal in 2013 rape case, overturns acquittal (PTI image) NEW DELHI: The Bombay high court on Thursday convicted former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 rape case filed by his former junior colleague, overturning his acquittal by a Goa trial court.The verdict came nearly 13 years after the alleged incident during the ThinkFest event in Goa, where Tejpal was accused of sexually assaulting a junior colleague inside a hotel elevator. The high court had reserved its judgment last week after hearing arguments from both sides.The Goa government had challenged Tejpal’s acquittal after a sessions court cleared him of all charges in May 2021. The appeal was heard by Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar of the Bombay high court’s Goa bench, which had directed Tejpal to remain present for the pronouncement of the verdict.Appearing for the Goa government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had argued that the trial court committed a serious error by evaluating the complainant’s conduct based on preconceived notions of how a survivor of sexual assault should behave.He submitted that there is no universal standard governing the reaction of a sexual assault survivor, as responses vary depending on an individual’s education, personality, social background and circumstances.Mehta also argued that the trial court placed undue emphasis on minor inconsistencies in the complainant’s statements instead of examining whether her core allegations remained consistent.Referring to an email sent by Tejpal to the complainant after the alleged incident, the Solicitor General argued that the accused had apologised for his “lapse of judgment”, expressed shame and stated that he believed the encounter had been consensual. The appeal was heard by Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar of the Bombay high court’s Goa bench, which had directed Tejpal to remain present for the pronouncement of the verdict.Appearing for the Goa government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had argued that the trial court committed a serious error by evaluating the complainant’s conduct based on preconceived notions of how a survivor of sexual assault should behave.He submitted that there is no universal standard governing the reaction of a sexual assault survivor, as responses vary depending on an individual’s education, personality, social background and circumstances.Mehta also argued that the trial court placed undue emphasis on minor inconsistencies in the complainant’s statements instead of examining whether her core allegations remained consistent.Referring to an email sent by Tejpal to the complainant after the alleged incident, the Solicitor General argued that the accused had apologised for his “lapse of judgment”, expressed shame and stated that he believed the encounter had been consensual. Rahul Gandhi slams BJP over NEET crackdown NEW DELHI: Standing with a group of youngsters who faced police action during the NEET protests, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said the ruling party is sending goons to the homes of students and forcing them to apologise, after which those apologies are being accepted by the PM.“There is no question of the youngsters apologising… I am very proud of them and what thousands of them did… They defended the Constitution and protected the idea of India and India’s future,” Rahul said.The Congress leader held a “freewheeling” discussion at his residence with a group of youngsters who participated in the protests at Jantar Mantar and other parts of the country. Muskan said she was being assumed to be a Muslim which makes an Indian a “fair game”, even clarifying that she is a Hindu.
