NEW DELHI: Conceding that its two-decade-long intervention to tackle air pollution in Delhi-NCR had failed to achieve desired results, Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to identify all major sources of pollution in two weeks and suggest long-term sectoral action plans to tackle each of them in a phased manner.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi attributed the failure to loosen the grip of pollution over Delhi-NCR to the court heeding myriad and divergent individual suggestions of experts. It said that “we have many expert opinions before us which apportion 12%-41% of the pollution load to vehicular emissions”.”This does not mean we will become experts and give knee-jerk orders like transition of all vehicles to electric. That’ll cause chaos. Why can’t the expert statutory body like CAQM bring all domain experts under one roof, hold deliberations and come out with long-term solutions, which would be implemented in phased manner so as not to hurt livelihoods, industry and the public,” the bench said.Additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati’s request for two-month time to CAQM for this purpose drew sharp a reaction from the bench, which chastised it for being non-serious in tackling the perennial problem of severe levels of AQI in Delhi-NCR. “We’ll give two weeks to CAQM,” it said and sought the action plan by Jan 21. During a rally, Kalyan was seen in a light mood, dancing with party workers, while his son, dressed in a blue Panjabi, cheered him on.In Chowringhee, Trinamool Congress candidate Nayna Bandyopadhyay started her day with a visit to a Shiva temple in Ward 45, seeking blessings before beginning a door-to-door campaign in the area. By afternoon, she addressed a rally in Ward 62 alongside councillor Sana Ahmed, continuing her outreach amid a steady stream of supporters. In a social media post, she said she was “seeking blessings for strength and guidance while continuing meaningful interactions with people,” adding that “every conversation and connection adds deeper purpose to the journey ahead.”Her opponent, Santosh Pathak of the BJP, who recently joined the party from the Congress, led a roadshow from SN Banerjee Road to Collin Street later in the day. Jammu: Separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah arrives to appear before a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in connection with a 1996 Srinagar violence case, in Jammu. (PTI Photo) JAMMU: A designated NIA court in Jammu Monday extended the remand of separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah till May 6 in connection with a three decades old terror case.Shah was produced before special judge Prem Sagar by the chief investigating officer of NIA, who sought further custody of Shah for investigations into the 1996 Naaz Crossing mob violence case in Srinagar, officials said.Observing that the accused was prima facie involved in serious offences punishable under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Arms Act, the court extended his custody for 10 more days, but directed the agency expedite the probe and strictly adhere to provisions of BNNS. The court further directed that the accused be medically examined every 48 hours.Shah, who was recently released on bail after spending nearly seven years in jail in other cases, was arrested in Delhi by the Srinagar branch of NIA on April 17 in connection with the 1996 case, related to a mob attack on policemen during a terrorist’s funeral. He was brought to Jammu on transit remand and produced before the NIA court.According to the prosecution, during the course of investigation, the accused admitted his presence at Naaz Crossing at the time of the attack, and allegedly led the mob along with other Hurriyat Conference leaders. (PTI Photo) JAMMU: A designated NIA court in Jammu Monday extended the remand of separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah till May 6 in connection with a three decades old terror case.Shah was produced before special judge Prem Sagar by the chief investigating officer of NIA, who sought further custody of Shah for investigations into the 1996 Naaz Crossing mob violence case in Srinagar, officials said.Observing that the accused was prima facie involved in serious offences punishable under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Arms Act, the court extended his custody for 10 more days, but directed the agency expedite the probe and strictly adhere to provisions of BNNS. The court further directed that the accused be medically examined every 48 hours.Shah, who was recently released on bail after spending nearly seven years in jail in other cases, was arrested in Delhi by the Srinagar branch of NIA on April 17 in connection with the 1996 case, related to a mob attack on policemen during a terrorist’s funeral. He was brought to Jammu on transit remand and produced before the NIA court.According to the prosecution, during the course of investigation, the accused admitted his presence at Naaz Crossing at the time of the attack, and allegedly led the mob along with other Hurriyat Conference leaders.
