NEW DELHI: Central govt has ordered Delhi Gymkhana Club (DGC), one of the oldest clubs in India, which is located next to PM’s residence in Lutyens’ Delhi, to hand over the premises by June 5 for the “strengthening and securing of defence infrastructure and other vital public security purposes”.Govt had given 27.3 acres of land on perpetual lease to DGC in 1928. The Land and Development Office (L&DO) under housing and urban affairs ministry said it has ordered “re-entry” — which means premature termination of lease and repossession — with “immediate effect” of the property.It added that upon such “re-entry”, the entire plot of land, along with all its buildings, structures, lawns and fittings, “shall vest absolutely” with L&DO. The order directed DGC to “hand over peaceful possession of the premises”; in the event of noncompliance, possession “shall be taken over in accordance with law”.The club has been operated from 2, Safdarjung Road since 1913, when it was called Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club. After Independence, it was renamed Delhi Gymkhana Club. The present buildings were constructed in the 1930s. For over a century, getting into DGC has been less about money and more about whether one fits into Delhi’s ‘elite class’, since it symbolises power and privilege.The move to take back the land parcel comes at a time when L&DO has issued similar directives to occupants of other govt land along Lok Kalyan Marg. The announcement about the invitation was made by US ambassador Sergio Gor who accompanied Rubio to what he described as a “productive” discussion with Modi on ways to deepen US-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies – areas that strengthen “both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific”. While India is open to the idea of Modi travelling to the US, it’s learnt that the government will wait to hear more from Washington about the likely scheduling of the visit. Modi is likely to travel to Florida in any case for the G20 summit that the US will host in December this year. Officials were tight-lipped about what the invitation might mean for the Quad summit for which Trump’s presence in India is long awaited. The Indian readout or Modi himself didn’t mention the invitation. “India is a vital partner to the United States,” said Gor in a post on X after the meeting. Rubio said he also discussed energy and efforts to secure supply chains with Modi. According to an Indian readout, Rubio also briefed Modi about the US perspective on regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia. It said that Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for peace efforts and its call for peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. Rubio’s visit is taking place amid hectic efforts to secure a US-Iran peace agreement, and the threat of imminent American military action should these attempts fail. “Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security. India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,” said Modi in a post on X. The Indian readout also said that Rubio briefed Modi about the “sustained progress in bilateral cooperation” across a wide range of sectors, including defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties. Rubio began his India visit from Kolkata in the morning, before arriving in Delhi in time for the scheduled meeting with Modi later in the afternoon. His bilateral meeting with external affairs minister S Jaishankar is scheduled for Sunday. At the US embassy event, he recalled that his first assignment as secretary of state was a meeting of the Quad foreign ministers. “And we were going to renew that. We wanted to do it here, not just because of our commitment to that structure of work, but also as a tangible sign of what an important role India plays in the United States, and in our posture, and in our approach to the Indo-Pacific,” said Rubio, adding that this commitment was anchored in the relationship between Modi and Trump. “The connection between leaders is incredibly important. These are two very serious leaders that are focused not just on the short term, but on the long term. Image credit: PTI SRINAGAR: Nomadic Gujjars and Backerwals, whose houses have been demolished by the administration, have filed a complaint with the police, alleging that “demolition of their tribal habitations” are in violation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and Forest Rights Act, 2006.They have sought action against the officials who razed around 30 habitations in Raika Bandi and Mahamaya forest belt in Jammu on Tuesday.According to the Shama Akhtar, councillor of the area, the demolished structures were protected under the law and no prior notice, eviction order, rehabilitation plan or opportunity of hearing was provided to them before the demolition drive. “We have submitted the complaint with police and the deputy commissioner. We expect quick action,” Akhtar said.On Wednesday, the Omar Abdullah govt constituted a two-member committee to investigate the demolitions. According to an order issued by the tribal affairs department, the panel has been to submit its report within seven days.The demolition, which led to widespread criticism and protests, has once again put the National Conference govt in the state at loggerheads with the LG administration. Image credit: PTI SRINAGAR: Nomadic Gujjars and Backerwals, whose houses have been demolished by the administration, have filed a complaint with the police, alleging that “demolition of their tribal habitations” are in violation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and Forest Rights Act, 2006.They have sought action against the officials who razed around 30 habitations in Raika Bandi and Mahamaya forest belt in Jammu on Tuesday.According to the Shama Akhtar, councillor of the area, the demolished structures were protected under the law and no prior notice, eviction order, rehabilitation plan or opportunity of hearing was provided to them before the demolition drive. “We have submitted the complaint with police and the deputy commissioner. We expect quick action,” Akhtar said.On Wednesday, the Omar Abdullah govt constituted a two-member committee to investigate the demolitions. According to an order issued by the tribal affairs department, the panel has been to submit its report within seven days.The demolition, which led to widespread criticism and protests, has once again put the National Conference govt in the state at loggerheads with the LG administration. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the Twisha Sharma death case. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is likely to consider the matter on Monday, news agency ANI reported.The case, involving allegations of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide against Twisha’s husband and in-laws, including a retired district judge. Also read: Twisha Sharma case timelineTwisha Sharma, a Noida-based model-turned-actor, had married advocate Samarth Singh, son of retired district judge Giribala Singh, in December 2025 and moved to Bhopal’s Katara Hills area.On May 12, Twisha was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Katara Hills. Her family subsequently accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.Police registered an FIR on May 15 against the retired judge and her advocate son in connection with the alleged dowry death case. The following day, police constituted a six-member SIT to investigate the case.As public attention around the case grew, Twisha’s family staged a brief dharna outside the chief minister’s official residence on May 17 after they were unable to meet him.On May 18, a sessions court in Bhopal rejected Samarth Singh’s bail plea. Bhopal police also announced a Rs 10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.Twisha’s family on May 19 demanded an independent probe into the case, questioning the police investigation and alleging a “posthumous character trial” of the deceased during media interactions by the accused side.A day later, the family met the chief minister, who assured them that he would seek a CBI probe into the matter.
