NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party suffered a major blow after estranged MP Raghav Chadha, along with six other parliamentarians, left the party and decided to merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party.In a press conference, Chadha said that the decision came after MPs felt that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party had strayed from its principles, values and core morals.Meanwhile, BJP chief Nitin Nabin welcomed the parliamentarians at the party headquarters in Delhi by offering them traditional sweets.”Welcomed Raghav Chadha Ji, Sandeep Pathak Ji, and Ashok Mittal Ji to the BJP family at the party HQ today. After this move, two-thirds — that is, seven — are set to merge with the BJP. If this number was any less, those wanting to merge would have to give up their Upper House membership.Hence, if Chadha had quit alone, he would have had to give up his Rajya Sabha membership. Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI: The BJP on Saturday intensified its attack on AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, releasing a fresh poster to target him, a day after a Raghav Chadha-led exodus dealt a major blow to the party.The poster, titled “A Film by AAP-da: Taanashah”, featured a stern image of Kejriwal at the centre, with a backdrop of a line of AAP members appearing to walk away. The tagline at the bottom reads “directed by Arvind Kejriwal”.The BJP’s offensive comes a day after a major setback for AAP, with several of its Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, quitting the party and joining the BJP.Raghav Chadha, who had earlier been removed as AAP’s deputy leader in the Upper House, formalised the split at a press conference in Delhi, claiming that nearly two-thirds of the party’s Rajya Sabha MPs would now function as a separate faction.Along with Chadha, Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal were among those who announced their exit and joined the BJP in the presence of party leadership. The development triggered sharp reactions within AAP, even as BJP leaders sought to project it as a natural outcome of internal dissent.Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva termed the split expected, while party leaders escalated their attack on Kejriwal by dubbing him the “Rahman Dakait of Delhi” and circulating images they described as “Sheeshmahal 2″.AAP, however, rejected the visuals outright. “All the pictures issued by Pravesh Verma are fake. They are not pictures of Kejriwal’s house. To find out whose house is how luxurious, Rekha Gupta and LG should open up their own homes, and Kejriwal will open up his house. The public will decide for itself,” Atishi said.The rupture within the party is not new and had been building for weeks. Tensions became public after Chadha was removed from his Rajya Sabha post, followed by criticism from within AAP, with some leaders accusing him of being soft on the BJP. Photo credit: PTI NEW DELHI: The exit of Raghav Chadha and six other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs drew a sharp reaction from social activist Anna Hazare on Friday, who said the leaders may not have left if the party had stayed on the “right” path.“Everyone has the right to hold an opinion in a democracy. They (Chadha and others) must have faced some trouble, which is why they left,” Hazare told reporters in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra, news agency PTI reported.“It is their fault. Had that party followed the right way, they would not have left”, he added.He reiterated that those who exited the party must have faced difficulties within the organisation. “Had the party gone in the right direction, they would not have quit the party,” he said, adding, “There must be some or the other reason (for their leaving AAP). In a democracy, every person has a view about where to stay and leave.”Hazare, a veteran social activist is known for his role in India’s anti-corruption movement and rural development work. It was during the anti-corruption movement led by him in 2011-12 that Raghav Chadha joined the AAP.Several AAP Rajya Sabha MPs left the party on Friday and decided to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chadha also claimed that nearly two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha members had quit and would function as a separate faction.As per the announcement, Chadha said the group of MPs had exercised constitutional provisions to merge with the BJP. “We have decided that we, the 2/3rd members belonging to the AAP in Rajya Sabha, exercise the provisions of the Constitution of India and merge ourselves with the BJP,” he said at the press conference at the Constitution Club in Delhi.The development comes amid what Chadha described as a collective decision by a majority of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs to exit the party. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Arvind Kejriwal, a day after Raghav Chadha and six other MPs from Rajya Sabha left the party. The BJP described Kejriwal as the “Rahman Dakait of Delhi” and released fresh images of what it called “Sheeshmahal 2.”Delhi minister Parvesh Verma in a press conference accused Kejriwal of living lavishly despite earlier claims of simplicity.He said, “…Delhi’s Rahman Dakait, just as a sequel to the movie ‘Dhurandhar’ came out, similarly, we are going to reveal ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ today…” Verma alleged that the original “Sheesh Mahal” in Delhi was built while the city was battling the Covid wave.He said, “…Kejriwal built the Sheesh Mahal in Delhi when Delhi was suffering from the COVID wave… The people of Delhi were demanding COVID medicine and were dying. During that time, work on Delhi’s Sheesh Mahal didn’t stop for a single day, as per Kejriwal’s orders…”The BJP leader further claimed that after electoral setbacks in Delhi, Kejriwal shifted his political focus to Punjab, creating pressure for Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann. He said, “…When our ‘Dhurandhar’ Delhi voters defeated Delhi’s Rahman Dakait, he moved to Punjab, increasing Bhagwant Mann’s problems. Of the four large government houses surrounding Bhagwant Mann’s house, one was occupied by Kejriwal, another by former Delhi health minister Satyendra Jain, a third by Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, and another by Manish Sisodia…”Verma also targeted Kejriwal over his recent residence at 95 Lodhi Estate and accused him of abandoning his earlier image of modest living.He said, “…In Punjab, Bhagwant Mann is upset… He built another Sheesh Mahal there. Today, in Delhi, he has been going to court for the past several years, asking for a bungalow. And when he got the bungalow where he moved in yesterday, 95 Lodhi Estate. When the pictures of it came out, we were astonished. The man who said he would live simply today lives in a luxurious manner…”The BJP also alleged that the properties were linked to funds from the alleged liquor scam case. PM Modi during his boat ride KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a short break from his hectic Bengal poll campaign schedule on Friday to enjoy an early morning boat ride on the Ganga, which, he said, “flows right through the soul of Bengal”.Modi, who had spent the night at Raj Bhavan, reached Man O War Jetty for a walk around 7am. He spent some time along the banks chatting with morning walkers and then hired a boat for a ride on the Hooghly.Later, he posted on X, “The sacred waters of the Ganga carry forward the eternal consciousness of the entire civilisation… I made a little effort to capture photos of this sacred Ganga. I also saw the Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Bridge from very close by. Yesterday evening, during the long roadshow from Howrah to Kolkata, I was on Howrah Bridge. And this morning, I saw this bridge from the Hooghly river,” he said.Boatman Prabir Biswas, 44, said it was a little past 7am when some people arrived and hired seven boats.“They didn’t reveal the purpose. It was only when we saw PM Modi descending the ghat steps that we realised today was going to be special,” he said.The PM was allotted a boat rowed by Gouranga Biswas, 72. “I spend most nights on my boat here. The PM came and asked my name in Bengali. I am not good at Hindi. I replied in Bengali,” said Gouranga. The PM paid him Rs 1,000 for the 35-minute ride, Rs 300 more than what they usually charge for an hour.The senior boatman said Modi did not speak much once they were mid-river.“It was only after we returned that he called me over and gave me a tight hug,” said Gouranga. “Ever since the interaction, I am being mobbed by strangers asking me about my feelings. It still feels unreal.”The other boatmen said they were briefed by the PM’s security personnel. “They asked us to follow a formation similar to one used for a VIP cavalcade on the road. A boat with three security personnel stayed in the front, and another with security personnel stayed at the rear. The three other boats surrounded the PM’s boat, keeping some distance. Divers and security personnel also stood at the ghat, keeping a sharp eye.A few other boatmen stayed on the ghat to ensure PM’s boat was safely anchored for him to alight.
