NEW DELHI: A major forest fire on early Wednesday broke out in Himachal Pradesh’s hill town of Kasauli, prompting the deployment of Indian Air Force helicopters to help control the blaze.At least two Air Force choppers were engaged in firefighting operations on Tuesday as efforts continued to douse the flames spreading through the forest area.The IAF deployed Mi-17 and Chinook helicopters to tackle the blaze, particularly in forest areas that were difficult to access from the ground. The helicopters also carried water from Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake to help contain the fire.Videos shared by news agencies PTI and ANI showed thick smoke rising from the scenic town’s forests, including orchard areas and Himalayan oak trees. Central Consumer Protection Authority cracks down on online sale of hazardous chemicals, explosive substances NEW DELHI : The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, has initiated regulatory action against the “unauthorized online sale and advertisement of hazardous chemicals, explosive substances, and related precursors on digital platforms” to strengthen consumer safety, public security and responsible e-commerce practices.According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the action was initiated following inputs regarding the online listing and sale of hazardous and regulated substances on platforms including IndiaMART, Justdial, Sigma-Aldrich India, Dial4Trade and ExportersIndia.The ministry said the substances identified include “explosive precursors and hazardous chemicals which may pose serious risks to public safety and national security if sold without proper safeguards and verification mechanisms.”It added that “unauthorized online access to such hazardous substances may expose consumers to serious safety risks and unlawful supply channels.”The CCPA has issued notices to the concerned e-commerce entities and online platforms seeking details related to “seller information and licensing compliance, buyer verification mechanisms, quantities sold, import details and applicable regulatory approvals.”During the preliminary examination, the authority observed that “several hazardous chemicals and explosive substances being listed or advertised online are regulated, restricted, controlled, or prohibited under various laws and regulatory frameworks governing public safety and handling of hazardous substances.”The authority also emphasised that online platforms and intermediaries “must exercise due diligence and ensure strict compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements before permitting the listing, advertisement, or sale of such substances.”The hazardous substances under scrutiny include Ammonium Nitrate, Gun Powder, Picric Acid and Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN).According to the ministry, the CCPA has issued “a total of eight notices to various entities in connection with comparable violations involving regulated and potentially dangerous substances.”As part of the regulatory response, the CCPA also held a meeting with officials of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to examine the existing regulatory framework governing hazardous and explosive substances.The ministry added that several online platforms and entities have started “removing, blocking, restricting, or delisting listings related to hazardous chemicals and explosive substances” following the intervention by the authority.The action, according to the ministry, reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring that digital marketplaces “do not facilitate unauthorized access to regulated or dangerous (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: In a step towards green and sustainable transportation, Indian Railways has approved the introduction of a 10-car Hydrogen Fuel Cell-based trainset on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway.According to the Ministry of Railways, the trainset is “all set to start soon” and will run at a maximum speed of 75 kmph using a “1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.”The move is aimed at promoting cleaner and more energy-efficient rail transport. The ministry said hydrogen fuel cell technology “generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, with water vapour as the only emission,” making it “a clean alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based traction systems.”With the initiative, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States that are exploring hydrogen-powered rail transportation.The Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana has been selected as the pilot route for operations. Representative Image NEW DELHI: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday objected to the “insistence” by a section of the Muslim community on cow slaughter during Eid-ul-Azha and said religious sentiments of the Hindu community should be respected to ensure peaceful coexistence in society.VHP central joint general secretary Surendra Jain said the Hindu community worships the cow as “Gau Mata” and alleged that repeated arguments supporting cow slaughter hurt Hindu sentiments.”The Hindu society worships the cow as mother. The attitude towards symbols associated with the nation and Sanatan traditions is well known,” he said.Referring to past incidents, Jain cited the 2017 animal slaughter regulations and alleged that cows are slaughtered openly in some states after the rules were introduced.”When rules were framed in 2017 to regulate animal slaughter, cows were also included. In some states where governments were supportive, cows were allegedly slaughtered openly. The displays that took place were extremely unfortunate and condemnable,” he said.The VHP leader said anti-cow slaughter laws are in force in more than half of the country and asserted that the Hindu community will not tolerate cow slaughter.”Hindu society will not tolerate cow slaughter at any cost. Source: ANI NEW DELHI: CPM workers on Wednesday attacked a vehicle of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials during protests outside the residence of former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram.The workers are protesting against the central agency over its searches at 10 premises in Keralam, including the residences of Pinarayi Vijayan, in the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) case, news agency ANI reported.ED officials are carrying out searches at 10 locations, including former Kerala CM’s rented house in Thiruvananthapuram and residence in Kannur, as well as offices connected to the case. Searches are also under way at the residence of CMRL Managing Director Sasidharan Kartha and at the Kozhikode residence of former minister Mohammed Riyas.Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal criticised the Centre over the ED action.In a post on X, the former Delhi CM said the ED raid against former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan was “yet another blatant misuse of central agencies by the BJP to target regional opposition parties and undermine democracy.”He further added that the timing of the ED action, after Congress had raised concerns about “inaction,” raises questions about the BJP-Congress relationship. The action follows a Kerala high court order permitting the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to continue its investigation in the case. The court had earlier dismissed petitions seeking to halt the probe and declined requests for additional time to approach a higher court. The ED had argued before the High Court that proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) can continue even without a prior FIR and pointed out that the SFIO had already filed a complaint in April 2025.The ED investigation in the case was initiated following findings by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), which alleged that payments amounting to lakhs of rupees were made to a company owned by Veena Vijayan for services that were not allegedly rendered.After the central agency issued summons and began searches, company officials approached the court, alleging harassment during questioning and arguing that there was no evidence to justify an ED investigation against the firm.The transactions had earlier come under scrutiny after observations by the Interim Board for Settlement of the Income Tax Department, which questioned their classification as legitimate business expenditure.Following these findings, the ministry of corporate affairs ordered an SFIO probe in January 2024.
