SC expressed concern about the vanishing of the joint family system Expressing concern about the vanishing of the joint family system and parents in nuclear families not spending quality time with their kids and instead handing over gadgets to keep them busy, Supreme Court Thursday said that it would lead to “disaster” as the new generation would be unaware of family bonding and relationships.While analysing the reasons behind recent incidents of people killing spouses, including the case of Sonam Raghuvanshi, a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale said that it was a reflection of changing society. It said that the present generation is more intelligent and informative, but it does not know how to deal with pressure. The court said that it is unfortunate that people nowadays rely on WhatsApp-circulated messages and treat them as knowledge. Agreeing with the court’s concern, solicitor general Tushar Mehta said that it has become a social problem and trust in human relationships is diminishing and there is a lack of tolerance.Justice Sundresh said that he was recently in a restaurant and he saw that a family gave a phone to a kid in order to keep him busy while they were having food. “If parents are replaced by gadgets, then it is a disaster. It is going to happen more in future. Joint family is an asset, and people don’t understand it. Happiness does not come with material possession but by human bonding and relationship. Nadda emerges as key negotiator from govt’s side NEW DELHI: As the govt’s main interlocutor with students protesting under the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) banner, Union health minister JP Nadda has been thrust into the limelight, holding talks with them and visiting the injured in hospitals.This is an interesting turn in Nadda’s journey. The former BJP president is not really known for revelling in the spotlight and is more at ease in closed-door political meetings than being in the middle of public attention. That his comments rarely stoke any controversy or ruffle others is being considered an asset when govt is holding talks with a group which is riding the angst of the student community, as any misstep may inflame passions.Nadda cut his teeth in students’ politics as an ABVP activist in Patna and Himachal University and grew in the role to head Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of BJP, collecting long experience of agitational politics, the second nature of student activism, which makes him the right person for the job.BJP circles are of the view that while being health minister who looked after the treatment of injured protesters put Nadda in a position to connect with CJP, his emergence as a negotiator came as a surprise. It is surmised that the former BJP chief’s low-key presence added to his acceptability. A BJP functionary said one of his strengths was that he was soft-spoken but also knew where to draw the line, a trait that ensures that he could engage with protestors skilfully while ensuring that the govt’s views were also put across firmly.He had also met activist Sonam Wangchuk in a private hospital as part of govt’s efforts to persuade him to break his hunger strike and engage in talks to end the stir.Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, known for his political savvy and proven track record of successful political outreach, could have been the other choice but for the fact that his resignation is CJP’s main demand.With some other leading BJP figures not really a good fit for the job because of their seniority, the task fell on Nadda, now a member of the party’s brains trust.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Joshi moved to panchayati raj NEW DELHI: Amid ongoing protests over NEET-UG paper leak issue, govt Thursday named new secretaries for higher and school education departments, with incumbent Vineet Joshi, who had charge of both, moved to low-profile panchayati raj department.While animal husbandry secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar was appointed the new secretary for higher education, TK Anil Kumar will be the new school education secretary. The changes mark an overhaul of sorts in education ministry bureaucracy, as Abhishek Singh was earlier named head of the National Testing Agency, which conducts NEET, CUET and other exams.In early June, CBSE chief Rahul Singh and secretary Himanshu Gupta were transferred out of the National Testing Agency after a controversy over on-screen marking.The secretary-level appointments included 13 new department heads, including a bifurcation of ministry of housing and urban affairs. MoHUA secretary K Srinivas has been shifted to development of north eastern region (DoNER) ministry. D Thara, from Gujarat cadre, has been appointed secretary of the just-created department of capital development, while her batchmate Satendra Singh from Jharkhand will lead the department of urban development.The changes in education ministry are significant as govt has said demand for removal of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan is not under consideration, but steps will be taken to address concerns. The appointments committee of cabinet also desginated Chandra Bhushan Kumar as new labour secretary, while Keshav Chandra will be the new mines secretary. Protests continue at Jantar Mantar NEW DELHI: Govt made a fresh outreach Thursday to agitating students for talks over the issues being raised by them, emphasising that a solution to the crisis cannot be found without dialogue.”I very humbly invite you on behalf of govt to come forward and hold dialogue,” Union minister Jitendra Singh, who has joined govt’s main emissary and health minister J P Nadda in holding talks with activist Sonam Wangchuk, said, adding the Centre has reached out to Cockroach Janta Party protesters four times since Wednesday afternoon, but has not received any response.CJP has, however, refused to hold another round of talks after meeting Nadda at his residence on July 20, alleging they ended up “wasting” four hours without any outcome. It has insisted on holding the next meeting at Jantar Mantar or at a neutral venue and not at Nadda’s residence or office. However, Nadda made it clear the meeting can happen at either of the two places, shrugging off CJP’s suggestion.The govt has contested CJP’s version of the July 20 meeting. On Thursday, though, the Centre emphasised its keenness to continue with talks to defuse the crisis whenever the protesters want and for as much of length of time as they wish.Union minister Jitendra Singh said, “We are ready to discuss the NEET issue and all other related issues with an open mind.” Appealing to protesters, he added, “You will appreciate as much as I do that without talks we cannot find a solution. Without a solution, we cannot lay out further roadmap… Govt does not stand on prestige. Please come forward so that we can find a way out in the larger interest of the youth and the nation at large.”Highlighting PM Modi’s announcement of setting up a fast-track court to ensure swift punishment for those involved in paper leaks, he said it attested to govt’s commitment to going to any extent to safeguard students’ welfare.Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation is a key CJP demand, and govt has so far given little indication that it is even considering the removal of one of its key figures, who has been a member of the Union Cabinet since 2014.
