NEET aspirant given Abu Dhabi centre takes re-test in Nagpur after NTA correction NEW DELHI: A NEET-UG 2026 candidate from Nagpur, who was initially allotted an examination centre in Abu Dhabi, appeared for the medical entrance re-test on Sunday after the National Testing Agency (NTA) revised his centre to Nagpur following widespread concern over the issue.The student reached PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ajni, Nagpur, to take the examination after receiving a fresh admit card on Saturday, news agency ANI reported.The controversy surfaced when the candidate downloaded his admit card and found that his examination centre had been allotted in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, just a day before the exam.The matter gained traction on social media and was also raised by leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who questioned the handling of students’ concerns.The student’s father said the family was shocked because they had not opted for an overseas examination centre.”After the admit card was downloaded at 4 pm yesterday, we found the Centre mentioned to be a school in Abu Dhabi. We were really shocked as we had not given anything as such in our options,” he said, as quoted by ANI.According to him, the family contacted the NTA helpline and was asked to send an email.He said officials later assured them that a revised admit card would be issued.NTA revises centreAfter verification, the NTA allotted the candidate a centre in Nagpur. The student’s father expressed relief over the decision and thanked both the authorities and the media for highlighting the issue.”Just 5 minutes ago, we received the fresh admit card with the exam centre in Nagpur. We are very thankful to the Agency for this prompt action. For millions of Indians, the rains were a season of nostalgia rather than nervousness. But today, the arrival of the monsoon is watched with a different emotion called anxiety.A delayed or weak monsoon no longer affects only farmers. It influences food prices, electricity bills, incomes, inflation, and even decisions taken by the Reserve Bank of India. And with scientists warning that El Nino conditions are developing over the Pacific Ocean, concerns are growing that the weather phenomenon could evolve into a much broader economic challenge.India is facing one of its most difficult monsoon seasons in more than a decade. A severe heatwave has already strained farms, power grids and daily life.Now, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) projecting rainfall at just 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA), the country could witness its first below-normal monsoon in three years and the weakest rainfall forecast since 2015.So what exactly is El Nino? Why does it matter so much to India? And how does a warming ocean thousands of kilometres away affect household budgets in India?Why the weather mattersIndia’s concerns over the monsoon have intensified as rainfall remains significantly below normal and El Nino risks continue to build. The southwest monsoon has stalled over southern Maharashtra, leading to a sharp rainfall deficit across large parts of the country.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, the country received only 42.6 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 18 against the normal 72.2 mm, leaving India with a 41 per cent shortfall.Central India has been hit particularly hard, recording a deficit of 67 per cent, while east and northeast India are down by 42 per cent. The southern peninsula has received 22 per cent less rainfall than normal and northwest India remains 6 per cent below average.The IMD has projected seasonal rainfall at 90 per cent of the Long Period Average, down from its earlier forecast of 92 per cent. Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) estimates an 80 per cent probability of El Nino developing between June and August and a 90 per cent chance thereafter. According to the agriculture ministry, the impact could be relatively severe in twelve states, including Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. For a country where agriculture still employs nearly 46 per cent of the workforce, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey, weather remains deeply intertwined with economic activity.What is El Nino?El Nino is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal.Under normal conditions, trade winds push warm surface water westward towards Asia and Australia. But during an El Nino event, these winds weaken or reverse, causing warm water to shift eastward and disrupting global atmospheric circulation.The phenomenon is part of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which has three phases:El NinoLa NinaNeutral conditionsEl Nino generally occurs every two to seven years and lasts nine to twelve months. Its impacts vary around the world. It can bring drought to Australia, Indonesia and parts of South Asia while causing excessive rainfall in South America and East Africa. For India, however, El Nino has historically meant weaker monsoons. Correlation Between El Niño and Indian Monsoon RainsA familiar but dangerous relationship?India’s monsoon and El Nino have shared a long and uneasy relationship. The ministry of earth sciences notes that since 1950, India has witnessed 16 El Nino years, and seven of those saw below-normal monsoon rainfall.What makes the current situation more worrying is that these natural cycles are unfolding against the backdrop of global warming, amplifying temperature extremes and rainfall variability.Scientists are even discussing the possibility of a “super El Nino.” According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is roughly a one-in-four chance that a particularly strong event could emerge later this year.Dr Paul Roundy, professor of atmospheric and environmental sciences at the State University of New York at Albany, recently wrote on X that there is “real potential for the strongest El Nino event in 140 years.”Similarly, Dr Andy Hazelton, associate scientist at the University of Miami, noted that “all models and observations are pointing in the same direction: a very strong El Nino with significant impacts on global climate this year.”Why the household budget is worriedInflation fears have shifted from oil to food. According to BNP Paribas, declining crude oil prices have improved the overall inflation outlook, but weather-related disruptions now pose a much larger threat.The brokerage said the possibility of a stronger El Nino raises concerns over agricultural output and food prices.Reflecting these risks, the Reserve Bank of India has raised its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.1 per cent from 4.6 per cent. Higher commodity prices, rupee depreciation and rising fuel prices are also expected to add pressure.Food inflation has already started inching up. Retail inflation measured through the Consumer Price Index rose to 3.9 per cent in May from 3.5 per cent in April.Vegetables, fruits, edible oils and spices have already become costlier. Heatwaves have pushed up prices of tomatoes, chillies and cabbages. Prices of onions and potatoes, which often contribute to seasonal spikes in inflation, could also face pressure.SBI Research expects tomato prices to rise sharply because of El Nino. Sachchidanand Shukla, Group Chief Economist at Larsen & Toubro, says food-linked commodities are likely to see the biggest price increase.”Among tomatoes, onions and potatoes, SBI Research expects the prices of tomatoes to shoot up due to El Nino. No impact on potato prices is seen, while onion prices tend to trouble the common man even in case of a normal monsoon year,” he told TOI. Prices may shoot upHow agriculture gets hitAgriculture is often the first casualty of a weak monsoon. Nearly half of India’s cultivated land still depends on rainfall, making crop output highly sensitive to weather conditions. Poor rains reduce soil moisture, delay sowing and affect the productivity of key kharif crops such as rice, pulses, cotton and sugarcane. To compensate for the lack of rainfall, farmers are forced to rely more heavily on groundwater, increasing their spending on electricity and diesel. Lower yields coupled with higher input costs squeeze farm incomes and deepen stress in rural areas.The impact is already becoming visible. According to 360 ONE Capital Research, delayed monsoon progress has begun to affect kharif sowing. As of June 12, the total area sown under kharif crops stood at 84.6 lakh hectares, down 3.9 per cent from the same period last year. Pulses and cotton have been hit the hardest, with acreage declining by 43.2 per cent and 28 per cent respectively. Rice has been a notable exception, with sowing rising 28.4 per cent year-on-year, though from a relatively low base.Despite the weak start to the monsoon, reservoir levels offer some relief. According to 360 ONE Capital, live reservoir storage as of June 11 stood at 28.3 per cent of total capacity, about 16 per cent above the ten-year average. Healthy water reserves could provide a crucial buffer for irrigation if rainfall remains patchy in the weeks ahead.The research firm said the monsoon’s progress needs to be closely monitored because of its implications for agricultural production, rural incomes and food inflation. Much will depend on rainfall during July and August, which account for the bulk of India’s seasonal precipitation. A recovery in rainfall during these crucial months could support crop output, but a prolonged shortfall would increase pressure on food prices and weigh on rural economic activity.The effects of a weak monsoon extend well beyond the farm sector. Lower agricultural incomes reduce spending in villages and small towns, affecting industries dependent on rural demand. BNP Paribas noted that several rural indicators have already shown signs of weakness, with slower tractor sales, lower government spending and rising food inflation hurting sentiment. Data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) show that personal and home-care companies recorded average revenue growth of 8.6 per cent during El Nino years, compared with 12.2 per cent in non-El Nino years. At the same time, hotter weather associated with El Nino tends to boost demand for cooling appliances.Can India handle a weak monsoon better?Economists believe India is better placed to withstand a weak monsoon than it was a decade ago. Agricultural output is less dependent on rainfall due to expanding irrigation coverage and healthier water reserves.According to Barclays chief India economist Aastha Gudwani, around 55 per cent of India’s gross cropped area is now irrigated, up from 40 per cent in 2010-11. Reservoir storage levels are also stronger, currently standing nearly 29 per cent above the ten-year average, aided by abundant rainfall last year.According to Reuters, HSBC economists argue that reservoir levels have become more important for food production and inflation than rainfall alone. However, they caution that rising temperatures could pose a greater threat.HSBC chief India economist Pranjul Bhandari said, “We find that the probability of high temperatures is stronger than the probability of low rains, and the quantum of rise in temperatures during El Nino years is rising.”Bhandari added that fruits and vegetables are likely to remain the most vulnerable to extreme heat and erratic weather conditions. While stronger irrigation networks and healthy reservoirs have improved India’s resilience, economists say the coming weeks will be crucial. Past episodes of El NiñoHeat: The invisible economic shockHeatwaves are emerging as a major threat alongside rainfall deficits. According to the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, Indians experienced an average of 19.8 heatwave days in 2024, the warmest year on record.The study estimates income losses of nearly 4 billion due to heat-related reductions in labour productivity. Outdoor workers, including farmers, construction labourers, delivery workers, street vendors and rickshaw pullers bear the brunt.Research by Piyush Narang and Ashok Gadgil of the India Energy and Climate Centre at the University of California, Berkeley, found that one day of extreme heat could lead to 3,400 excess deaths nationwide, while a five-day heatwave could cause almost 30,000 deaths.The dairy sector is also worried. Milk prices had already risen by 2-3 per cent in May. Industry executives say another increase could come in July or August if deficient rainfall affects fodder availability.The larger economic riskAccording to the NSE, “For 2026, the key challenge is the emergence of El Nino risk.” The exchange noted a 60 per cent probability of deficient rainfall and a further 24 per cent probability of below-normal rainfall. India’s monsoon and El Nino have shared a long and uneasy relationship. Several drought years, including 1987, 2002, 2009 and 2015, coincided with El Nino events, with poor rainfall hurting crop production and pushing up food prices. Historically, weak monsoons have disrupted kharif sowing, lowered reservoir levels, affected rabi output and fuelled food inflation, creating ripple effects across the broader economy.El Nino is not merely about warmer waters in the Pacific Ocean. For India, it is about the price of tomatoes and milk, the cost of electricity, farm incomes, inflation and economic growth. It affects workers labouring under the sun and commuters navigating heat-stressed cities. It shapes RBI forecasts and government spending decisions.That is why the progress of the rains in July and August will be watched closely. Because in India, the monsoon may still evoke memories of paper boats and evening tea, but in an economy where climate and consumption remain closely intertwined, every delayed shower now carries consequences far beyond the clouds. For millions of Indians, the rains were a season of nostalgia rather than nervousness. But today, the arrival of the monsoon is watched with a different emotion called anxiety.A delayed or weak monsoon no longer affects only farmers. It influences food prices, electricity bills, incomes, inflation, and even decisions taken by the Reserve Bank of India. And with scientists warning that El Nino conditions are developing over the Pacific Ocean, concerns are growing that the weather phenomenon could evolve into a much broader economic challenge.India is facing one of its most difficult monsoon seasons in more than a decade. A severe heatwave has already strained farms, power grids and daily life.Now, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) projecting rainfall at just 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA), the country could witness its first below-normal monsoon in three years and the weakest rainfall forecast since 2015.So what exactly is El Nino? Why does it matter so much to India? And how does a warming ocean thousands of kilometres away affect household budgets in India?Why the weather mattersIndia’s concerns over the monsoon have intensified as rainfall remains significantly below normal and El Nino risks continue to build. The southwest monsoon has stalled over southern Maharashtra, leading to a sharp rainfall deficit across large parts of the country.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, the country received only 42.6 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 18 against the normal 72.2 mm, leaving India with a 41 per cent shortfall.Central India has been hit particularly hard, recording a deficit of 67 per cent, while east and northeast India are down by 42 per cent. The southern peninsula has received 22 per cent less rainfall than normal and northwest India remains 6 per cent below average.The IMD has projected seasonal rainfall at 90 per cent of the Long Period Average, down from its earlier forecast of 92 per cent. Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) estimates an 80 per cent probability of El Nino developing between June and August and a 90 per cent chance thereafter. According to the agriculture ministry, the impact could be relatively severe in twelve states, including Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. For a country where agriculture still employs nearly 46 per cent of the workforce, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey, weather remains deeply intertwined with economic activity.What is El Nino?El Nino is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal.Under normal conditions, trade winds push warm surface water westward towards Asia and Australia. But during an El Nino event, these winds weaken or reverse, causing warm water to shift eastward and disrupting global atmospheric circulation.The phenomenon is part of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which has three phases:El NinoLa NinaNeutral conditionsEl Nino generally occurs every two to seven years and lasts nine to twelve months. Its impacts vary around the world. It can bring drought to Australia, Indonesia and parts of South Asia while causing excessive rainfall in South America and East Africa. For India, however, El Nino has historically meant weaker monsoons. Correlation Between El Niño and Indian Monsoon RainsA familiar but dangerous relationship?India’s monsoon and El Nino have shared a long and uneasy relationship. The ministry of earth sciences notes that since 1950, India has witnessed 16 El Nino years, and seven of those saw below-normal monsoon rainfall.What makes the current situation more worrying is that these natural cycles are unfolding against the backdrop of global warming, amplifying temperature extremes and rainfall variability.Scientists are even discussing the possibility of a “super El Nino.” According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is roughly a one-in-four chance that a particularly strong event could emerge later this year.Dr Paul Roundy, professor of atmospheric and environmental sciences at the State University of New York at Albany, recently wrote on X that there is “real potential for the strongest El Nino event in 140 years.”Similarly, Dr Andy Hazelton, associate scientist at the University of Miami, noted that “all models and observations are pointing in the same direction: a very strong El Nino with significant impacts on global climate this year.”Why the household budget is worriedInflation fears have shifted from oil to food. According to BNP Paribas, declining crude oil prices have improved the overall inflation outlook, but weather-related disruptions now pose a much larger threat.The brokerage said the possibility of a stronger El Nino raises concerns over agricultural output and food prices.Reflecting these risks, the Reserve Bank of India has raised its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.1 per cent from 4.6 per cent. Higher commodity prices, rupee depreciation and rising fuel prices are also expected to add pressure.Food inflation has already started inching up. Retail inflation measured through the Consumer Price Index rose to 3.9 per cent in May from 3.5 per cent in April.Vegetables, fruits, edible oils and spices have already become costlier. Heatwaves have pushed up prices of tomatoes, chillies and cabbages. Prices of onions and potatoes, which often contribute to seasonal spikes in inflation, could also face pressure.SBI Research expects tomato prices to rise sharply because of El Nino. Sachchidanand Shukla, Group Chief Economist at Larsen & Toubro, says food-linked commodities are likely to see the biggest price increase.”Among tomatoes, onions and potatoes, SBI Research expects the prices of tomatoes to shoot up due to El Nino. No impact on potato prices is seen, while onion prices tend to trouble the common man even in case of a normal monsoon year,” he told TOI. Prices may shoot upHow agriculture gets hitAgriculture is often the first casualty of a weak monsoon. Nearly half of India’s cultivated land still depends on rainfall, making crop output highly sensitive to weather conditions. Poor rains reduce soil moisture, delay sowing and affect the productivity of key kharif crops such as rice, pulses, cotton and sugarcane. To compensate for the lack of rainfall, farmers are forced to rely more heavily on groundwater, increasing their spending on electricity and diesel. Lower yields coupled with higher input costs squeeze farm incomes and deepen stress in rural areas.The impact is already becoming visible. According to 360 ONE Capital Research, delayed monsoon progress has begun to affect kharif sowing. As of June 12, the total area sown under kharif crops stood at 84.6 lakh hectares, down 3.9 per cent from the same period last year. Pulses and cotton have been hit the hardest, with acreage declining by 43.2 per cent and 28 per cent respectively. Rice has been a notable exception, with sowing rising 28.4 per cent year-on-year, though from a relatively low base.Despite the weak start to the monsoon, reservoir levels offer some relief. According to 360 ONE Capital, live reservoir storage as of June 11 stood at 28.3 per cent of total capacity, about 16 per cent above the ten-year average. Healthy water reserves could provide a crucial buffer for irrigation if rainfall remains patchy in the weeks ahead.The research firm said the monsoon’s progress needs to be closely monitored because of its implications for agricultural production, rural incomes and food inflation. Much will depend on rainfall during July and August, which account for the bulk of India’s seasonal precipitation. A recovery in rainfall during these crucial months could support crop output, but a prolonged shortfall would increase pressure on food prices and weigh on rural economic activity.The effects of a weak monsoon extend well beyond the farm sector. Lower agricultural incomes reduce spending in villages and small towns, affecting industries dependent on rural demand. BNP Paribas noted that several rural indicators have already shown signs of weakness, with slower tractor sales, lower government spending and rising food inflation hurting sentiment. Data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) show that personal and home-care companies recorded average revenue growth of 8.6 per cent during El Nino years, compared with 12.2 per cent in non-El Nino years. At the same time, hotter weather associated with El Nino tends to boost demand for cooling appliances.Can India handle a weak monsoon better?Economists believe India is better placed to withstand a weak monsoon than it was a decade ago. Agricultural output is less dependent on rainfall due to expanding irrigation coverage and healthier water reserves.According to Barclays chief India economist Aastha Gudwani, around 55 per cent of India’s gross cropped area is now irrigated, up from 40 per cent in 2010-11. Reservoir storage levels are also stronger, currently standing nearly 29 per cent above the ten-year average, aided by abundant rainfall last year.According to Reuters, HSBC economists argue that reservoir levels have become more important for food production and inflation than rainfall alone. However, they caution that rising temperatures could pose a greater threat.HSBC chief India economist Pranjul Bhandari said, “We find that the probability of high temperatures is stronger than the probability of low rains, and the quantum of rise in temperatures during El Nino years is rising.”Bhandari added that fruits and vegetables are likely to remain the most vulnerable to extreme heat and erratic weather conditions. While stronger irrigation networks and healthy reservoirs have improved India’s resilience, economists say the coming weeks will be crucial. Past episodes of El NiñoHeat: The invisible economic shockHeatwaves are emerging as a major threat alongside rainfall deficits. According to the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, Indians experienced an average of 19.8 heatwave days in 2024, the warmest year on record.The study estimates income losses of nearly $194 billion due to heat-related reductions in labour productivity. Outdoor workers, including farmers, construction labourers, delivery workers, street vendors and rickshaw pullers bear the brunt.Research by Piyush Narang and Ashok Gadgil of the India Energy and Climate Centre at the University of California, Berkeley, found that one day of extreme heat could lead to 3,400 excess deaths nationwide, while a five-day heatwave could cause almost 30,000 deaths.The dairy sector is also worried. Milk prices had already risen by 2-3 per cent in May. Industry executives say another increase could come in July or August if deficient rainfall affects fodder availability.The larger economic riskAccording to the NSE, “For 2026, the key challenge is the emergence of El Nino risk.” The exchange noted a 60 per cent probability of deficient rainfall and a further 24 per cent probability of below-normal rainfall. India’s monsoon and El Nino have shared a long and uneasy relationship. Several drought years, including 1987, 2002, 2009 and 2015, coincided with El Nino events, with poor rainfall hurting crop production and pushing up food prices. Historically, weak monsoons have disrupted kharif sowing, lowered reservoir levels, affected rabi output and fuelled food inflation, creating ripple effects across the broader economy.El Nino is not merely about warmer waters in the Pacific Ocean. For India, it is about the price of tomatoes and milk, the cost of electricity, farm incomes, inflation and economic growth. It affects workers labouring under the sun and commuters navigating heat-stressed cities. It shapes RBI forecasts and government spending decisions.That is why the progress of the rains in July and August will be watched closely. Because in India, the monsoon may still evoke memories of paper boats and evening tea, but in an economy where climate and consumption remain closely intertwined, every delayed shower now carries consequences far beyond the clouds. PM Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenous frontline naval platforms NEW DELHI: In a landmark moment for India’s indigenous defence capability, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenous frontline naval platforms — advanced stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, a survey vessel (large) INS Sanshodhak, and an anti-submarine warfare shallow-water craft INS Agray — into the Indian Navy in Kolkata. These state-of-the-art platforms will significantly enhance the nation’s operational capabilities, maritime security against geopolitical threats, and domain awareness.Addressing a gathering at the commissioning, PM Modi said, “The event represented an important milestone in the journey towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, a secure India and a developed India.” Congratulating the Indian Navy, scientists, engineers and workers, the PM said the achievement reflected India’s growing technological and maritime capabilities. “No nation can emerge as a major power without strong maritime capabilities. Development, security and prosperity are closely linked to the oceans. Most of the world’s trade moves through sea routes, while vast global data networks operate beneath the oceans”, he stated while emphasising the importance of maritime strength in the modern world. He further noted that critical minerals, deep-sea resources and future sources of energy will increasingly be connected to the maritime domain. Therefore, he said, a nation’s economic and strategic influence is directly linked to the strength of its maritime sector.Modi said India fully understands this reality and is preparing itself accordingly. “The commissioning of the three naval platforms stands as testimony to the country’s growing capabilities and skills”, he said. Recalling the commissioning of INS Vikrant, he said that it had marked the beginning of a new chapter in India’s maritime journey and announced India’s growing naval strength to the world. He said the journey from INS Vikrant to the commissioning of INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak is not merely a story of new warships but also a reflection of India’s increasing self-reliance. “All three vessels symbolise India’s commitment to indigenous design, manufacturing and innovation. Designed and built in India, the vessels showcase the talent of Indian industries, the expertise of Indian engineers and the hard work of Indian workers”, he added.“The strength of the nation’s military cannot be measured by its dependence on global markets but by its ability to become self-reliant. India seeks to become a producer and a manufacturer, because nations that manufacture become decisive players on the global stage”, he added. He noted that more than 40 indigenously built warships and submarines have been inducted into the Indian Navy over the past few years. He remarked that nearly every few weeks, the Navy has received a new capability, while 45 major naval platforms are currently under construction. These figures, he said, are not merely statistics but indicators of India’s industrial capacity and future potential.PM on development in maritime sector:Underlining the immense employment-generating potential of the maritime sector, Modi said, “The govt views the maritime sector not as an isolated industry but as a major engine of employment and economic growth for a developed India. A modern ship requires large quantities of steel, electronics, machinery and thousands of components, creating opportunities across extensive industrial supply chains”. Referring to the three commissioned vessels, he noted that more than 200 MSMEs contributed to their construction, generating substantial employment and economic activity across the country.The PM said the time has come for India to enter the next phase of maritime development, and the govt has adopted a new vision for the shipbuilding sector and has introduced several policy reforms in recent years to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities. “The Rs 70,000-crore incentive package announced for the shipping sector is not merely an economic measure but an investment in India’s maritime future and industrial expansion. Initiatives such as Sagarmala reflect this comprehensive vision and are helping reduce logistics costs, accelerate industrial growth and create new opportunities in coastal regions” he stated.The PM also pointed out that June 21 is also observed globally as World Hydrography Day and described it as a remarkable coincidence that India’s most advanced hydrographic survey vessel, INS Sanshodhak, is commissioned on the same day.He said the commissioning ceremony has coincided with the International Day of Yoga being celebrated across the world and expressed happiness at having the opportunity to visit the historic land of Bengal, which has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s intellectual, cultural and national renaissance and has connected India with the world through maritime routes for centuries.Modi on self-reliance in defence manufacturing:Following the formation of his govt in 2014, Modi said a determined effort was made to change this situation through major policy reforms and a strong emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing. “These efforts have opened new opportunities in defence design, manufacturing and exports. While India’s total defence production stood at around Rs 40,000 crore in 2014, it has now risen to nearly Rs 1.8 lakh crore, demonstrating the significant progress made towards building a strong, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry”, he said. Modi emphasised that the progress made over the past 12 years demonstrates how transformative change becomes possible when policies are clear, direction is correct, and all stakeholders work together with a shared commitment towards national development.The PM reiterated that India has always viewed the oceans as a medium for cooperation and connectivity. “Security is indispensable for protecting prosperity, while self-reliance is necessary for building the future. INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak embody these very ideals and symbolize a nation that is increasingly aware of its capabilities, confident in its strengths and determined to move forward with renewed energy and purpose in the twenty-first century” he emphasised.In a post on X, defence minister Rajnath Singh described the tri-commissioning as a defining moment in India’s maritime capability development. “These state-of-the-art platforms are a testament to our robust defence manufacturing ecosystem and our unwavering resolve towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. They now stand ready to safeguard our national interests and ensure a secure Indian Ocean,” he wrote. West Bengal governor Shri RN Ravi, CM Suvendu Adhikari, Navy chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, other senior officers of the Indian Navy, and representatives of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), which built the ships, were among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony.Navy chief Admiral Swaminathan said this tri-commissioning in Kolkata, comes just 17 months after independent India’s first tri-commissioning in Mumbai, and shows that India’s warship-building capability is gaining new speed in modern technology, self-reliance, and self-confidence. He added that these ships will greatly boost the Indian Navy’s capabilities and make its efforts to protect the nation’s maritime interests much more powerful and effective. The Navy chief said, “GRSE has long been a trusted partner of the Indian Navy in ensuring maritime security. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate the GRSE team. I would also like to congratulate our industry partners and MSMEs who have helped us achieve this success.”Builder of three ships: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers: Reinforcing its technological leadership, GRSE is the only PSU shipyard to receive the Defence Minister’s Award for Excellence in the defence and aerospace sector for designing the most silent ship for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations for the Indian Navy. From building 05-ton boats to 24,600-ton fleet tankers, GRSE has demonstrated unmatched versatility and established itself as a pioneer warship builder of the nation. Since 1960, GRSE remains the only Indian shipyard to have delivered over 100 warships and is also the first Indian shipyard to have built a fleet replenishment tanker. These state-of-the-art platforms will significantly enhance the nation’s operational capabilities, maritime security against geopolitical threats, and domain awareness.Addressing a gathering at the commissioning, PM Modi said, “The event represented an important milestone in the journey towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, a secure India and a developed India.” Congratulating the Indian Navy, scientists, engineers and workers, the PM said the achievement reflected India’s growing technological and maritime capabilities. “No nation can emerge as a major power without strong maritime capabilities. Development, security and prosperity are closely linked to the oceans. Most of the world’s trade moves through sea routes, while vast global data networks operate beneath the oceans”, he stated while emphasising the importance of maritime strength in the modern world. He further noted that critical minerals, deep-sea resources and future sources of energy will increasingly be connected to the maritime domain. Therefore, he said, a nation’s economic and strategic influence is directly linked to the strength of its maritime sector.Modi said India fully understands this reality and is preparing itself accordingly. “The commissioning of the three naval platforms stands as testimony to the country’s growing capabilities and skills”, he said. Recalling the commissioning of INS Vikrant, he said that it had marked the beginning of a new chapter in India’s maritime journey and announced India’s growing naval strength to the world. He said the journey from INS Vikrant to the commissioning of INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak is not merely a story of new warships but also a reflection of India’s increasing self-reliance. “All three vessels symbolise India’s commitment to indigenous design, manufacturing and innovation. Designed and built in India, the vessels showcase the talent of Indian industries, the expertise of Indian engineers and the hard work of Indian workers”, he added.“The strength of the nation’s military cannot be measured by its dependence on global markets but by its ability to become self-reliant. India seeks to become a producer and a manufacturer, because nations that manufacture become decisive players on the global stage”, he added. He noted that more than 40 indigenously built warships and submarines have been inducted into the Indian Navy over the past few years. He remarked that nearly every few weeks, the Navy has received a new capability, while 45 major naval platforms are currently under construction. These figures, he said, are not merely statistics but indicators of India’s industrial capacity and future potential.PM on development in maritime sector:Underlining the immense employment-generating potential of the maritime sector, Modi said, “The govt views the maritime sector not as an isolated industry but as a major engine of employment and economic growth for a developed India. A modern ship requires large quantities of steel, electronics, machinery and thousands of components, creating opportunities across extensive industrial supply chains”. Referring to the three commissioned vessels, he noted that more than 200 MSMEs contributed to their construction, generating substantial employment and economic activity across the country.The PM said the time has come for India to enter the next phase of maritime development, and the govt has adopted a new vision for the shipbuilding sector and has introduced several policy reforms in recent years to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities. “The Rs 70,000-crore incentive package announced for the shipping sector is not merely an economic measure but an investment in India’s maritime future and industrial expansion. Initiatives such as Sagarmala reflect this comprehensive vision and are helping reduce logistics costs, accelerate industrial growth and create new opportunities in coastal regions” he stated.The PM also pointed out that June 21 is also observed globally as World Hydrography Day and described it as a remarkable coincidence that India’s most advanced hydrographic survey vessel, INS Sanshodhak, is commissioned on the same day.He said the commissioning ceremony has coincided with the International Day of Yoga being celebrated across the world and expressed happiness at having the opportunity to visit the historic land of Bengal, which has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s intellectual, cultural and national renaissance and has connected India with the world through maritime routes for centuries.Modi on self-reliance in defence manufacturing:Following the formation of his govt in 2014, Modi said a determined effort was made to change this situation through major policy reforms and a strong emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing. “These efforts have opened new opportunities in defence design, manufacturing and exports. While India’s total defence production stood at around Rs 40,000 crore in 2014, it has now risen to nearly Rs 1.8 lakh crore, demonstrating the significant progress made towards building a strong, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry”, he said. Modi emphasised that the progress made over the past 12 years demonstrates how transformative change becomes possible when policies are clear, direction is correct, and all stakeholders work together with a shared commitment towards national development.The PM reiterated that India has always viewed the oceans as a medium for cooperation and connectivity. “Security is indispensable for protecting prosperity, while self-reliance is necessary for building the future. INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak embody these very ideals and symbolize a nation that is increasingly aware of its capabilities, confident in its strengths and determined to move forward with renewed energy and purpose in the twenty-first century” he emphasised.In a post on X, defence minister Rajnath Singh described the tri-commissioning as a defining moment in India’s maritime capability development. “These state-of-the-art platforms are a testament to our robust defence manufacturing ecosystem and our unwavering resolve towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. West Bengal governor Shri RN Ravi, CM Suvendu Adhikari, Navy chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, other senior officers of the Indian Navy, and representatives of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), which built the ships, were among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony.Navy chief Admiral Swaminathan said this tri-commissioning in Kolkata, comes just 17 months after independent India’s first tri-commissioning in Mumbai, and shows that India’s warship-building capability is gaining new speed in modern technology, self-reliance, and self-confidence. He added that these ships will greatly boost the Indian Navy’s capabilities and make its efforts to protect the nation’s maritime interests much more powerful and effective. The Navy chief said, “GRSE has long been a trusted partner of the Indian Navy in ensuring maritime security. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate the GRSE team. I would also like to congratulate our industry partners and MSMEs who have helped us achieve this success.”Builder of three ships: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers: Reinforcing its technological leadership, GRSE is the only PSU shipyard to receive the Defence Minister’s Award for Excellence in the defence and aerospace sector for designing the most silent ship for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations for the Indian Navy. From building 05-ton boats to 24,600-ton fleet tankers, GRSE has demonstrated unmatched versatility and established itself as a pioneer warship builder of the nation. Since 1960, GRSE remains the only Indian shipyard to have delivered over 100 warships and is also the first Indian shipyard to have built a fleet replenishment tanker. Indian forces take part in yoga sessions pan-India NEW DELHI: From high-altitude mountains to parade grounds in the plains to the high seas, a large number of armed forces personnel took part in yoga sessions across the country and in Indian waters to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga on Sunday. All military commands of the three services — the Army, Navy and the Air Force — have been preparing for this annual mega event. This year’s Yoga Day’s theme is ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, which emphasises the importance of yoga for all ages. In Shillong, defence minister Rajnath Singh led the defence forces in celebrating the 12th International Day of Yoga by performing various asanas and breathing exercises with around 1,000 soldiers of the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army at the Eastern Air Command Headquarters on Sunday.Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma, IAF chief ACM AP Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, and General Officer Commanding of Headquarters 101 Area Lt General Mohit Wadhwa also performed yoga.Rajnath described yoga as a holistic science and an art of living that connects individuals with their inner selves, society, nature, and ultimately, the divine. He added that yoga offers a path to inner stability, mental clarity, and emotional resilience. In a post on X, the defence minister said, “Yoga is not merely the foundation of a healthy body, but a path to living a balanced and disciplined life. Through the continuous efforts and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, this cultural heritage of India has today become a global people’s movement.”Rajnath performs yoga with 1,000 soldiers in ShillongHe emphasised that yoga symbolises the power of India’s ancient traditions, which is ensuring the well-being of all humanity. He appealed to the people to make Yoga an integral part of their daily lives to build a healthy body, calm mind, and a strong nation. From Shillong, all the participants witnessed the PM’s Yoga Day speech delivered from the historic Red Road in Kolkata.Yoga sessions were also conducted at numerous forward locations, reflecting the dedication and enthusiasm of the defence forces personnel. MoS defence Sanjay Seth celebrated Yoga Day at Swarn Jyanti Dikshant Mandap, Ranchi University at an event organised by the Ministry of AYUSH. He, too, underlined the need to incorporate yoga in day-to-day lives as it teaches to remain calm in favourable or adverse circumstances.“The yoga session at the Cariappa Parade Ground (Delhi Cantt) began at around 6 am. About 3,500 people gathered at the venue for the event, including Army personnel and their families, several defence attaches, NCC cadets, and school children,” a senior Army officer said.The IAF has also organised a host of events spanning its multiple commands, from the Western Air Command in Delhi to the Southern Air Command in Thiruvananthapuram. Sumit Roy, Abhishek Banerjee’s personal secretary NEW DELHI: Sumit Roy, a key aide of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, has been booked in a fraud and forgery case in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district, a police officer said on Sunday.Also Read | Sumit Roy: The key aide who managed access to AbhishekAccording to the officer, the complainant has accused Roy—who has been absconding for some time—of cheating and forgery. Former TMC MLA Sujoy Hazra has also been named in the case, he added.Hazra was recently arrested in connection with a separate case.”We are examining the allegations detailed in the complaint and gathering all relevant documents. Each claim will be verified on the basis of evidence, and appropriate legal action will be taken accordingly,” a senior Criminal Investigation Department (CID) official told PTI.The fresh development comes just days after Roy was named in a land-grab case. Subsequently, the West Bengal Police issued a lookout notice and carried out a pre-dawn search operation lasting several hours at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata residence in an effort to trace Roy’s whereabouts.The police action thrust Roy—previously little known outside Trinamool’s circles—into the spotlight of an expanding investigation into the alleged land fraud.
