NEW DELHI: As TMC faces its biggest crisis in West Bengal, there is growing speculation over the future of its contingent of MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the impact developments in Bengal will have on the heft of the second largest opposition party within INDIA bloc and its overall ramifications on Opposition’s capacity to take on the govt, especially as the Mamata Banerjee-led party has been a most vociferous critic of BJP-led NDA govt at Centre. How the split within TMC in West Bengal following its defeat in state polls plays out at national level will be keenly watched in the coming days. Significantly, INDIA bloc is scheduled to meet after a long gap on June 8. According to party sources, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee plan to attend the meeting for now and rally support from the Opposition camp amid the latest developments. On a day TMC split for the first time in its 28-year history, Delhi circles were abuzz with talk of whether the former CM will be able to keep all her MPs together and not end up witnessing what has transpired in West Bengal. Most senior MPs TOI reached out to either chose not to respond or were tight-lipped about the situation. A senior leader, however, emphasised that it was crucial at this stage for party MPs to stand united in Parliament and outside. The TMC has 28 MPs in Lok Sabha and 13 in Rajya Sabha. While refusing to make any comment on whether party members see the rebellion in state to be a reflection on TMC leadership, a senior leader chose to train his guns at BJP for going after opposition parties through “Operation Lotus”, a term used by its political opponents to describe the saffron party’s alleged strategy to engineer defections.According to sources, given the fast evolving situation, TMC chairperson, party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other senior leaders were huddled in a long meeting “to decide on the next course of action”, with the need to keep the flock together in Parliament being a key concern.A big test awaits Banerjee’s MPs in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. Her MPs will need to re-strategise their outreach and projection in the face of the severe setback in Bengal. Banerjee’s formidable record as a three-term CM and her strident voice had helped TMC position itself as a dominant regional player and a key member of the INDIA alliance. However, the TMC is likely to lose this clout given the latest developments. What is also expected is a rise in leverage enjoyed by Congress in INDIA bloc, notwithstanding the reverses it suffered, excluding Kerala, in recent assembly polls. The changing dynamics within the alliance are expected to be evident at the meeting on Monday. More so, since DMK, another leading opposition party, has fallen out with Congress, which chose to break ranks with it in Tamil Nadu following the party’s defeat in assembly polls and joined the TVK govt led by Vijay. Significantly, DMK is yet to confirm its participation in the June-8 meeting.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosBoost For Air Defence: 4th S-400 Squadron ‘Starts Arriving In India From Russia’Pakistan Embarrassed In Japan As ‘Illegal’ Mosque Inaugurated In Presence Of Envoy Faces DemolitionVijay’s TVK Offers Rajya Sabha Seat To Congress Ahead Of June 18 PollFinal 1% Left To Resolve In India-US Trade Deal: US Envoy Sergio GorFirhad Hakim Resigns As Kolkata Mayor, TMC Says Mamata Banerjee ‘Permitted’ HimExpelled TMC Leader Ritabrata Banerjee Appointed LoP, Urges Mamata To Be Rebels’ ‘Chief Advisor”Cease Such Attacks’: India Condemns Kuwait Airport Attack That Killed Indian CitizenHow A Class 12 Student Traced The CBSE-Coempt Tender Trail And Raised Tough QuestionsMamata’s TMC Orders Organisational Reset Amid Growing MLA Revolt Buzz | WatchThe US Just Threatened India With New Tariffs Mid-Negotiation. LONDON/KOLKATA: Anisha Chakraborty texted her brother Raktim in the US from Birmingham last Friday to say she had good news to share. The 28-year-old from Kolkata’s Mukundapur had been job-hunting after completing her master’s with distinction at Aston University and had just made it to the final round of an interview.Raktim, who is based in Arkansas, replied to his sister on Saturday morning. The text wasn’t delivered. He would hear later that Anisha had been run over by a black Audi RSQ8 on Dartmouth Middleway in Birmingham city centre, a short walk from her accommodation, just after 2am local time.Anisha had gone out Friday night to a pub with former university friends. She and a friend walked back together before splitting midway. She was alone and almost home when the car hit her.Four days later, Anisha’s Indian-origin boss at the restaurant where she had been working part-time is running a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to cover the cost of repatriating her body to Kolkata. Till late Wednesday, crowdfunding contributions totalled a little over £16,000 (Rs 20.5 lakh). In Kolkata, Anisha and Raktim’s father Ramkrishna Prasad Chakraborty, principal of KK Das College at Patuli on the southeastern outskirts, said every moment of waiting for his daughter’s body to arrive was tortuous. “She was so excited about the job. She was looking forward to a new phase in her life,” he said. “My wife hasn’t spoken to anyone since getting the news.”West Midlands Ambulance Service in the UK said it received multiple 999 calls at 2.17am Saturday, reporting a collision between a car and a pedestrian. Two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a MERIT trauma team responded. Anisha was dead by then.A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. Police told TOI Wednesday that he had received bail with conditions while the investigation continues. The Chakraborty family had been in regular contact with Anisha until Friday evening. “After that, there was no contact. Saturday morning, one of her friends informed us that she had met with an accident,” her father said.Raktim told TOI hat he had lost not just a younger sister but someone he treated like a daughter, being eight years older. “We had planned a video call during the weekend that never happened,” Raktim said. “She wanted to do something on her own. I told her to come to the US but she wanted to go to the UK as she had researched all the universities there and decided this master’s would help her career.”Anisha studied at Sakhawat Memorial Govt Girls’ School and graduated from Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College in Kolkata. She moved to the UK in Sept 2024 to pursue a master’s in international business. In July 2025, she started working at Jimmy Spices, a global buffet restaurant on Broad Street in Birmingham. After getting her graduate visa, she switched to working in the cafe downstairs so she could concentrate on applying for full-time jobs in marketing and content writing.Shefali Karulkar, general manager at Jimmy Spices, recounted how Anisha “always had her laptop on in the café”.”Whenever I spoke to her, she would always tell me she was job-hunting. She was a lovely person, so positive and kind-hearted.”End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaPhotostories10 rare snakes found in the Amazon rainforest and what travellers should knowKangana Ranaut skips fast fashion, embraces handloom royalty in Gaurang Shah’s majestic Kanjeevaram sareeBenefits of Tulsi Mala according to hindu traditions8 metro corridors driving residential growth and transforming India’s urban housing landscapeChaos, jumps, screams: Fire sweeps through Delhi’s Malviya Nagar hotel, kills 21Green anacondas can do THIS? 10 facts that may surprise youMumbai bullet train project: How 3rd tunnel breakthrough was achieved in just 5 monthsMrinal Tai Gore flyover extension set to change Mumbai’s commute; what we knowLalit Modi’s crores-worth London mansion is a 7,000 sq ft cricketing den with signed jerseys, lavish interiors and a private liftDaily sacred rituals to enhance your Good Luck123Hot PicksDelhi Restaurant FireRitabrata BanerjeeDonald TrumpAbhishek BanerjeeJay Silva Cause of DeathWI vs SLMaria SharapovaPat CumminsRitabrata BanerjeeTop TrendingDelhi Malviya Nagar Restaurant FireBengaluru MurderK AnnamalaiPatrik LaineMaja chwalinskaDK ShivakumarKarnataka Family MurderSouth Delhi Building CollapseMamata BanerjeeAbhishek Banerjee Vamsikrishna4 hours ago 0
