NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Monday condemned the defacement of the Indian Embassy premises in Slovenia’s Ljubljana, by “anti-India elements”, and urged Slovenian authorities to take action against those responsible.In a statement, the MEA said, “We condemn the defacement of the premises of our Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia by anti-India elements.”Highlighting the protections accorded to diplomatic missions under international law, the ministry said, “Under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are inviolable and must be protected.”

Police on Monday used water cannons, tear gas and resorted to a lathi charge as thousands of students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly in Ranchi. The protesters attempted to breach multiple layers of barricades as they advanced towards the Assembly.At least three people, including two protesters and a Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) personnel, were injured during the confrontation, according to officials. The protesters were taking part in the ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march organised by the JPSC-JSSC Reform Morcha.Several videos surfaced online showing protesters advancing towards the Assembly despite multiple layers of barricading and heightened security as the Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly remained underway. Videos also showed police using water cannons against the protesters, some of whom were seen dancing and raising slogans as they faced the water jets.Police deployed water cannons as the crowd pushed through successive barricades before resorting to a lathi charge to prevent further movement.Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) leader Devendra Nath Mahto also joined the march and was seen being carried by protesters as they moved towards the Assembly. Mahto has been on a hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, the main protest site, for the past nine days.Carrying a portrait of former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren, Mahto said, “Despite being on hunger strike, the barbed wires will not be able to stop us. I came here in an ambulance. The government will have to listen to us.”Mahto said protesters had already crossed three layers of barricading and questioned the government’s response to the agitation.“I am no God or messiah; I am a common man. There will be no change in my personal life. But the barbed wires hurt more than the hunger strike. Students crossed three layers of barricading. Why does the government want anarchy and not agree to students’ demands?” he said.He also urged chief minister Hemant Soren not to allow the situation to escalate.“Today it’s CM Hemant Soren’s birthday, and he should not take such a step where some unfortunate events like at the Jantar Mantar take place here. Do not do anything that causes someone to bleed or get injured and makes the crowd even more agitated,” Mahto said.“Arrest is a legal process, but there should be no bloodshed. If the government does not agree to the demands, it will be remembered as the one which killed democracy. NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday made an emotional appeal to floor leaders of all parties to end the logjam in the Lower House and allow Parliament to function without disruptions.During a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, Birla urged floor leaders to “let the voice of the people be heard”, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.The Lok Sabha speaker said key bills should be discussed in the House and there should be no disruption so that members can express their views on legislation being passed by Parliament, sources added.”Emphasising the importance of constructive deliberations, meaningful participation and adherence to the highest parliamentary traditions, the Speaker appealed to all parties to extend their cooperation in ensuring the smooth and orderly conduct of the proceedings so that issues concerning the people can be discussed in a comprehensive and productive manner,” sources said.The appeal comes amid continued disruptions by the Opposition during the Monsoon Session. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday questioned Congress’ silence over the recent conviction of former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in a 2013 sexual assault case.In a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused Congress and other opposition parties of having a “one-dimensional, one-sided and prejudiced” thinking on issues like freedom of expression or the persecution of women.”Just recently, Tarun Tejpal, the editor-in-chief of the controversial magazine Tehelka, was found guilty by the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court in a 2013 rape case and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. This matter is important today because, even after so many days have passed, not a single word has been heard from the Congress side,” Trivedi said.”Nor from any opposition party, nor from any institution that proclaims itself the self-appointed protector of women’s interests. This shows how one-dimensional, one-sided, and prejudiced the thinking is on issues like freedom of expression or the persecution of women,” he added.During the press conference, the BJP leader also alleged that Tejpal had a connection with Congress leadership, claiming that Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter to then finance minister P Chidambaram directing him not to harass the magazine. He also said that UPA government awarded Tejpal the Excellence in Journalism Award in 2010.”This is the very business house that had conducted a bizarre kind of sting operation. When Atal Ji’s government constituted an inquiry commission under the chairmanship of Justice Phukan, it was an opportunity when the sting-operating group refused to hand over the entire tapes for verification. There couldn’t be more suspicion than this. And when the inquiry report came, by then the government had changed, and the Congress government never even tabled that inquiry report on the floor of the House,” he said.”When the BJP government raised the issue, a 41-page summary report was tabled on the floor of the House. And today, when the culprits have been proven guilty, I want to remind everyone that their connection is with Congress… During the UPA era, Supreme Leader Sonia Gandhi ji wrote a letter to the then finance minister P Chidambaram sahib on September 25–27, 2004, stating that there should be no harassment of Tehelka and its financier in any manner. Positive treatment should be accorded to them. Today, I want to ask the Congress: Was your government engaging in unfair treatment at that time? In 2010, the then law minister Veerappa Moily sahib awarded him the Excellence in Journalism Award. Today, this is their situation, and not a single word is coming out of your mouth,” he added.This comes after Bombay high court found Tejpal guilty of rape and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment.
