Major Abhilasha Barak New Delhi: United Nations will posthumously honour two Indian peacekeepers on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on Friday for making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh, who served with UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), and Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan, who was deployed with UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), will be posthumously honoured by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with the prestigious Dag Hammarskjold Medal.Guterres will also present the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year award to Major Abhilasha Barak of India for her exceptional contribution towards women empowerment and gender sensitisation during her deployment with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. Major Barak, widely recognised as the first woman combat helicopter pilot of the Indian Army, is currently serving in Lebanon as commander of Female Engagement Team (FET) under UNIFIL.Major Barak will be the third Indian recipient of the prestigious honour, following Major Suman Gawani and Major Radhika Sen, who were honoured for their commendable work while serving in UN peacekeeping missions.Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving under the UN flag, by far the highest number from any troop-contributing country.India is the second largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping force, with more than 4,200 of its military and police personnel, including 155 women — currently serving UN peace operations across missions in Abyei, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Somalia, South Sudan and Western Sahara. Delhi slum fire near Udyog Bhawan brought under control; no casualties reported NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in labour slums near Udyog Bhawan in Delhi on early Wednesday after an electric panel caught fire, with the flames spreading to nearby temporary structures, officials told ANI.According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), around 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. As the intensity of the blaze increased, additional units were pressed into service, taking the total number of fire tenders at the site to 24.Speaking to news agency ANI, Mukesh Verma, Divisional Officer (DO), Delhi Fire Service, said the fire has been completely brought under control.”At around 11.22 PM, our fire control room received information about a fire in some slums behind Maulana Azad Medical College. Seven to eight vehicles were immediately dispatched. However, as the intensity of the fire increased, the number of vehicles increased and currently, 24 vehicles are present at the scene. The fire has been completely brought under control,” Verma said.”Based on preliminary information, we have no information about any casualties,” he added.Verma said the affected area comprised both residential slums and storage facilities.”This area included some residential slums, some storage facilities, and we saw plywood storage. CJI Chief Justice Surya Kant Tuesday acknowledged that the judiciary faced the challenge of preserving the public’s faith in it and said the panacea lay in the judges’ knowledge, integrity and commitment to expeditious and fair justice delivery.Initiating a dialogue between the Indian Supreme Court and the SC of Russian Federation in Moscow, the CJI said despite varied history and tradition, the emerging common challenge to judiciary was “how to preserve public confidence in the administration of justice while adapting to a rapidly changing world”.He said despite the rapid advancement of technology and its use in judiciary, the fundamental purpose of courts was primarily to uphold justice in a manner that commanded public trust. “While technology may expand the reach of courts, it is ultimately the learning, integrity and commitment of judges who serve within them that determine the quality of justice delivered,” CJI Kant said.Speaking in the presence of chairman of the Supreme Court of Russian Federation Igor Krasnov, the CJI noted that technology may aid justice delivery but could never replace judicial values and adjudications.He said technology had become a means in India to make courts accessible, efficient, user-friendly, transparent and responsive to people’s grievances through electronic filing, digital case management, digitisation of court records, online access to court records, virtual hearings and video conferencing facilities.He said artificial intelligence was also playing its part in judicial administration and legal research as well as translating judgments in 16 regional languages. However, he ruled out any role for AI in the core function of judiciary – adjudication of disputes.”Administration of justice is, and must remain, fundamentally a human endeavour. The accused in hospital after being shot by police NEW DELHI: A 10-year-old girl was allegedly snatched from her family that was sleeping on a pavement in south Delhi, sexually assaulted and murdered by a cab driver early Monday morning, reports Abhay.Police said the accused raped the minor inside his cab at Mandi road in south Delhi. He then strangled her to death and bludgeoned the body in a bid to disfigure it. The body, hidden under stones in a forested area on Faridabad-Gurgaon road, was recovered in the evening.The suspect, Basu Kumar Singh (25), is a married man with two children and has a criminal history, including two murder attempts. What began as a 5am call to the cops about the kidnapping rapidly escalated into a fast-paced manhunt, culminating in the arrest of the accused, who allegedly confessed to the ghastly crime. He was produced in court and was granted police custody. Victim Sleeping On City Footpath Forced Into CabThe crime took a dramatic turn on Tuesday evening when the accused was shot and wounded by cops after he allegedly snatched a weapon in an escape attempt during a crime scene reconstruction.”Her father told us that the family was sleeping on a footpath when his elder daughter was taken away in a car, possibly a cab,” a police officer said, adding that a kidnapping case was registered.Deputy commissioner of police (south) Anant Mittal constituted a team to crack the case, and the accused was apprehended within seven hours of the incident.After analysing CCTV footage and contacting cab aggregators, police identified the vehicle and traced the accused. He was later apprehended from west Delhi’s Vikaspuri around noon, after completing a ride with a passenger.During interrogation, Singh initially denied he had committed the crime. Confronted with evidence, he admitted to taking the girl in his cab but claimed that he had later dropped her on Mandi Road.As the interrogation continued, he finally confessed to killing the minor after raping her at an isolated place and then dumping the body. Cops recovered the body that had injuries on face and head, around 4.30pm. How Dad’s Memory, Digital Trail Led Police To Suspect In 7 HoursHe told police that he had come to CDR Chowk to pick up a passenger when he spotted the girl and allegedly abducted her. “After sexually assaulting her, he claimed that he strangled her and then hit her with stones before dumping the body in a forested area near the Gurgaon border,” an officer said.Singh’s wife and two kids live in Bihar. Police learnt that he had a criminal background at his native place. He was linked to at least three cab aggregators.At around 8.30pm, the accused was taken to Mandi village for crime scene reconstruction. Ladakh bandh to protest SRINAGAR: A month after talks between Ladakh groups and a Union home ministry (MHA) panel in Delhi, the Union Territory observed Tuesday a complete shutdown against the Centre’s alleged backtracking on understandings reached during the parleys.Businesses across Leh and Kargil remained closed as large numbers of people gathered to hear functionaries of Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), the region’s two main political groups that had called the bandh.The groups have alleged that draft minutes of the May 22 meeting shown to LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay Lakrook omitted an agreement on a proposed legislative body with authority over the bureaucracy as well as constitutional safeguards for Ladakh through a provision similar to Article 371.LAB and KDA have warned that if the “two essentials” are not reflected in the final minutes, they would return to their original demand of “full statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh”. Sonam Wangchuk, LAB member and environmentalist, was part of the May talks, described later by both groups as “historic”.This concern was raised Tuesday at Leh’s Polo Ground by speakers from LAB and other groups before a gathering of around 7,000 people. The other groups present were Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA), Anjuman Imamia, Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam and representatives of the Christian community.The speakers also highlighted other worries, including a proposed excise policy change to allow free liquor sales throughout Ladakh, privatisation of Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), land and tourism-related issues.LAB co-chairman Lakrook claims he had pointed out what he described as “omissions” in the draft minutes of the May talks and sought corrections, but the revised minutes were not released or sent back to him.Several rounds of talks have been held with the Centre on Ladakh since 2023. The process stopped after four people were killed and over 80 injured on Sept 24, 2025, in alleged police firing on protesters in Leh demanding statehood. LAB’s Wangchuk was accused of inciting the protesters, arrested, charged under NSA and kept in Jodhpur jail.
