Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth appointed next Army chief, to take charge on June 30

NEW DELHI: The govt has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief Army with effect from June 30. The present Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi retires from service the same day.Over a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades, Lt General Seth has had extensive experience across the operational, strategic, capability development and institutional domains, contributing significantly to the Indian Army’s combat effectiveness and long-term transformation.The General Officer has commanded at every level in diverse operational environments. His command assignments include an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the western theatre, and a counter-insurgency Force in J&K. As a Lt General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations. He subsequently served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, overseeing key national and international military engagements and ceremonial responsibilities.On elevation to Army Commander, the officer commanded South Western Command and Southern Command, earning the rare distinction of commanding two operational Army Commands and providing strategic oversight across critical theaters for over a period of two and half years. He has held several key staff and strategic appointments that have significantly influenced operational planning, force management and capability development.Widely recognised for his contributions to force modernisation, the General Officer has tenanted pivotal appointments in the Strategic Planning and Capability Development verticals of the Army Headquarters, shaping its modernisation trajectory, capability roadmap and long-term force structuring initiatives. His contributions have been instrumental in aligning operational requirements with emerging technologies and future battlefield imperatives.An accomplished military professional, Lt General Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, has consistently excelled in professional military education, securing top positions in courses of instruction. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, and has also attended the prestigious Command & Staff Course in Paris, reflecting his broad strategic outlook and understanding of contemporary military affairs.

They better get their act together, and FAST!” Trump wrote on his social media platform.Trump’s remarks came hours after India summoned a senior US diplomat to South Block for the second time on Friday to convey its displeasure over American attacks on merchant vessels that resulted in the deaths of Indian sailors. However, he did not address the deaths of the Indian crew members in his statement.US acknowledges strikes on Indian-crewed vesselIn contrast, the Trump administration had already acknowledged that American forces had fired two Hellfire missiles at a third commercial vessel carrying Indian crew members off the coast of Oman on Thursday. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), “American forces disabled the Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker MT Jalveer in the Gulf of Oman at 11:20 pm ET on June 10, making it the third commercial vessel targeted by US forces this week.”CENTCOM said the action was taken against the vessel “as it attempted to transport oil from Iran through the Gulf of Oman”.”A US aircraft fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from US forces,” it added.The strike on MT Jalveer came days after US forces disabled the Palau-flagged tankers M/T Marivex and M/T Settebello.India protests attacks on merchant shipsIndia said that three merchant ships carrying Indian crew members had come under attack by the US Navy off the Oman coast over the past four days, resulting in the deaths of three Indians. NTA recruitment 2026 NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency has launched a dedicated digital training programme for examination officials on the iGOT Karmayogi Bharat platform to strengthen supervision and invigilation of its examinations, including NEET-UG.Titled ‘Pariksha Karmayogi: Capacity-Building Programme for Examination Officials’, the programme has been designed to strengthen the capacity of examination functionaries and to ensure the smooth, secure and standardised conduct of offline, pen-and-paper based examinations, the NTA said in a statement on Saturday.The course is intended for examination functionaries, in particular Centre Superintendents and Invigilators, who are involved in the conduct of the NTA examinations, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test NEET (Undergraduate), the statement said.The programme comprises four modules that together cover the complete examination lifecycle.The first module introduces the course and the role of examination functionaries in maintaining fairness, transparency and integrity. The second covers preparedness before the examination, including centre readiness, security arrangements and adherence to standard operating procedures.The third module deals with examination-day operations across four stages — before the examination, at the beginning of the examination, during the examination and after the examination. The fourth module serves as a quick reference guide, offering a concise recap of key instructions and responsibilities.Hosted on the iGOT Karmayogi Bharat platform, the course enables standardised, self-paced learning and assessment-based certification for examination personnel across the country. The initiative aims to enhance procedural compliance, operational efficiency and accountability at examination centres, the statement said.It further said that well-trained personnel are critical to the smooth and fair conduct of large-scale national examinations. By establishing uniform examination administration standards, the programme reinforces NTA’s commitment to excellence and integrity in its examinations.”The initiative reflects NTA’s continued efforts to leverage technology-driven capacity building and to strengthen the examination ecosystem through trained and certified manpower,” it added.The NEET-UG for admissions into medical courses took place on May 3 this year but was cancelled by the NTA on May 12 amid allegations of a paper leak.
