(IANS file photo) NEW DELHI: Mizoram’s ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) on Thursday created history by securing its first-ever representation in the Rajya Sabha. Senior leader K Laltluangkima won the election to the state’s lone Upper House seat.Laltluangkima polled 26 votes in the 40-member assembly, defeating opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate Zothansangi Hmar, who secured all 10 votes cast by her party’s legislators, news agency PTI reported.Three MLAs, BJP legislators K Beichhua and K Hrahmo, and Congress MLA C Ngunlianchunga, abstained from voting, while ZPM legislator W Chhuanawma could not cast his vote due to health reasons.The ZPM, which came to power in the 2023 assembly elections, currently has 27 MLAs in the House. The MNF has 10 members, while the BJP and Congress have two and one legislators, respectively.The victory marks a major milestone for the ZPM, founded in 2017, as Laltluangkima becomes the party’s first Rajya Sabha MP. He also earned a Master’s degree in Plumbing from an institution in Maryland, US.Laltluangkima entered politics in 1997 through the MNF (Nationalist), which later became the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) under Lalduhoma. Six MPs didn’t turn up for the parliamentary party meeting MUMBAI: The crossover of two-thirds of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s nine LS members to the Eknath Shinde-led party seems more or less complete as the six MPs, who had written to the LS Speaker Wednesday about forming a separate group, didn’t turn up for the parliamentary party meeting called by Uddhav Thackeray’s party in Delhi Thursday by issuing a whip.It was attended by the other three – Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai and Rajabhau Waze – who had already made it clear they stood by Uddhav. Sena UBT RS MP Sanjay Raut said Thursday that action will be taken against the MPs who hadn’t turned up for the parliamentary party meeting as a ‘whip’ had been issued. LS MP Arvind Sawant said notices have been sent to the absent MPs.In the rebel camp, five of the six rebel MPs, barring Omraje Nimbalkar who was in Pune, were moved to Jaipur Thursday to make sure they didn’t show up for the UBT meeting. They were in New Delhi on Wednesday and flew out on Thursday morning. The six MPs are expected to join the Shinde-led Sena next week after they meet the LS Speaker and get their group recognised. Sena sources said Sena UBT MP Sanjay Jadhav is “group leader of the breakaway MPs”.Sawant said, “The absent MPs have betrayed the party. We are going to issue showcause notices to them by the evening. If they do not respond within seven days, legal action will be taken. We will write to the Speaker as well as the MPs. Our party’s directive (whip) was issued, and everyone received it. Despite that, they were not present here today.”Raut continued his tirade of abuses against the six MPs Thursday. He claimed NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar had called him and said they must go to the constituencies of rebel MPs and hold protests. Raut said Pawar himself was ready to hold protest meetings.Raut described the action against the breakaway MPs as ‘Operation Tudwa’. He claimed the dissident MPs were given “an additional Rs 10 crore” and then moved to a safe location in Rajasthan. He demanded that police security extended to the “traitors” be withdrawn.He said, “We met yesterday, me, Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai, and a photo of us was published. If those six people have met, show their faces… You are still members of the party. Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan is the new India Under-19s cricket captain BHOPAL: In 2020, a boy asked for a cricket bat of premium willow. The Covid lockdown had shut down the family’s civil construction business in Chambal and it was a luxury they could ill afford, but his father took a loan and bought one for Rs 65,000.It was an expensive gamble. But that “KL Rahul” series bat is now repaying the loan, not in rupees but in runs and resolve. And the boy from the badlands of Chambal, once known for its dacoits, is the new India Under-19s cricket captain.Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan, a promising uncapped cricketer and his family’s youngest member (he turns 18 in Nov), leads India against Sri Lanka in the upcoming series.It was early 2020 when Yashbardhan, already showing promise as a batsman, asked for the bat. His innocent request initially put frowns on the faces of the family elders. Their business contracts had just been cancelled. Every penny counted.His father, Anami Singh Chauhan, had then described the purchase as “our biggest bet on his dream”. The spanking new willow fetched bountiful returns: Yash amassed 1,300 runs with it in the Under-13 Kanmadikar Trophy in 2021, drawing the attention of selectors and coaches.Every boundary off that bat felt like a small repayment for all the anxious nights that had preceded the purchase, the family said.”I told Yashbardhan to always keep that KL Rahul series bat with him. That bat effectively set him on his cricketing journey,” said an elated Chauhan, currently in the flour mill business in Gwalior.The bat became talismanic. Yash carried it around like an accessory, from practice to matches, from small grounds to tournament halls, a symbol of the family’s sacrifice and hope. While teammates occasionally borrowed his gloves or pads, the willow was never loaned.When a senior Ranji player once asked him if he could use it, Yashbardhan refused. Not out of arrogance, the family insisted, but out of reverence for what the bat represented: a father’s faith in his son in a time of crisis.”This bat carries my deepest emotions. I can never share this willow with anyone,” Yashbardhan told TOI.Now, national duty calls as Board of Control for Cricket in India has appointed him U-19 captain.
