KOLKATA: With rain clouds looming over the city, round-the-clock preparations are underway at the Brigade Parade Ground to make the sprawling venue rain-proof for Saturday’s oath-taking ceremony of Bengal’s first BJP government.Heavy showers on Thursday and Friday left large sections of Maidan slushy and waterlogged, forcing the authorities and event planners to rapidly scale up rain-protection measures to ensure that the mega event proceeds without any disruptions. As a contingency measure, the BJP has also kept Netaji Indoor Stadium ready as an alternative venue.At the centre of the preparations is a massive 3 lakh square feet waterproof hangar tent erected to provide cover in case of rain. Additional tarpaulins have been kept ready to expand the covered area, if needed.More than 1,000 workers are working continuously in shifts to restore the rain-hit ground. Seating capacity has been increased from 50,000 to 80,000 barely a day before the ceremony. The main dais has been divided into three sections – one will accommodate Modi, Shah and CMs and deputy CMs of BJP-ruled states. NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) late Friday shared a video purportedly showing AMMK MLA-elect Kamaraj writing a letter extending support to Vijay’s party, sharply rejecting claims by AMMK general secretary T. T. V. Dhinakaran,” the party said.TVK further alleged that false information was now being circulated to discredit the development. “However, the information now being spread that he did not write the letter is completely false and contrary to the truth. It is essential for everyone to clearly understand this. Concealing all these facts, T.T.V. Dhinakaran is continuing to spread false news and misinformation,” the statement added.The Vijay-led party also insisted it was not indulging in political bargaining to secure support. “The public should understand that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has no need to bargain or negotiate with anyone,” it said.TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Assembly with 108 seats, falling 10 short of the majority mark. NEW DELHI: The rare hantavirus outbreak reported aboard a cruise ship carrying two Indian crew members has triggered international attention, but Indian health experts and government agencies say there is no immediate concern for the country as sporadic hantavirus cases and evidence of exposure have been reported in India earlier as well.According to information shared through International Health Regulations channels, two Indian nationals onboard the vessel are currently asymptomatic and under observation.The World Health Organization has also said the overall public-health risk remains low and there is no cause for panic.The Dutch-flagged expedition vessel MV Hondius reported eight suspected and confirmed infections linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus, including three deaths, while travelling from South America towards Africa.Experts said the outbreak has drawn attention mainly because the Andes strain is the only known hantavirus variant associated with limited human-to-human transmission. However, unlike Covid-19, the infection does not spread easily and generally requires prolonged close exposure.“Hantavirus is a rodent-borne viral infection that can affect the lungs and kidneys. In severe lung involvement, known as cardiopulmonary hantavirus disease, mortality can reach 30-50%. However, unlike Covid-19, it is not highly contagious and is mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodent saliva, urine or droppings,” said Dr G.C. Khilnani, Chairman, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine.He said India has so far seen only sporadic cases and there is no immediate public-health threat. Dr Khilnani advised people to keep homes rodent-free and use wet cleaning instead of dry sweeping in contaminated areas because infected particles can become airborne during cleaning.Medical literature from India has documented rare hantavirus infections earlier too. A case report published in the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine described Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in a Mumbai woman shortly after childbirth. Doctors had initially suspected dengue or leptospirosis because the symptoms overlapped before hantavirus antibodies were later detected.Dr N.K. Ganguly, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology and Research at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said the Andes strain had earlier been linked to outbreaks in Argentina and may initially resemble a Covid-like respiratory illness.“Patients may first develop fever, body ache, malaise and mild respiratory symptoms before some rapidly deteriorate and require intensive care,” he said.Dr Ganguly added that India’s healthcare system is now better prepared after Covid-19, with advanced hospitals capable of detecting hantavirus through respiratory virus testing panels. Suspected patients would be isolated and managed under respiratory infection protocols, though no proven antiviral treatment currently exists.A senior health ministry official said WHO is coordinating international response measures under the International Health Regulations mechanism, including diagnostic support, epidemiological assessment, and arrangements for safe disembarkation of passengers and crew.The Public Health Emergency Operations Centre under IDSP-NCDC has also held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and preparedness measures. Dr Khilnani advised people to keep homes rodent-free and use wet cleaning instead of dry sweeping in contaminated areas because infected particles can become airborne during cleaning.Medical literature from India has documented rare hantavirus infections earlier too. A case report published in the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine described Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in a Mumbai woman shortly after childbirth. Doctors had initially suspected dengue or leptospirosis because the symptoms overlapped before hantavirus antibodies were later detected.Dr N.K. Ganguly, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology and Research at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said the Andes strain had earlier been linked to outbreaks in Argentina and may initially resemble a Covid-like respiratory illness.“Patients may first develop fever, body ache, malaise and mild respiratory symptoms before some rapidly deteriorate and require intensive care,” he said.Dr Ganguly added that India’s healthcare system is now better prepared after Covid-19, with advanced hospitals capable of detecting hantavirus through respiratory virus testing panels. Suspected patients would be isolated and managed under respiratory infection protocols, though no proven antiviral treatment currently exists.A senior health ministry official said WHO is coordinating international response measures under the International Health Regulations mechanism, including diagnostic support, epidemiological assessment, and arrangements for safe disembarkation of passengers and crew.The Public Health Emergency Operations Centre under IDSP-NCDC has also held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and preparedness measures. Writers’ Building, Kolkata: Also known as Mahakaran, it was initially constructed to house offices for junior clerks of the British East India Company. KOLKATA: Writers’ Buildings and several other Bengal govt offices in Kolkata will turn orange after dusk on Saturday to mark the inaugural day of the first-ever BJP govt.The illumination trials were held Friday evening.Sources said the Greco-Roman facade of the Writers’, which will once again serve as the state secretariat after its restoration and renovation is completed, would be decked with thousands of orange rice bulbs. Several other buildings, including the Assembly House, Kolkata Collectorate and Akashvani Bhavan, will be similarly decked with orange hues from around 5.30 pm.Many state govt buildings received a blue-and-white makeover after Mamata Banerjee assumed office in 2011, but a few heritage buildings like Writers’, the state secretariat till 2013, and the Kolkata Collectorate retained the red and off-white shade.Inside the Writers’ Buildings, where the new CM Suvendu Adhikari is expected to step in around afternoon after taking oath at Brigade Parade Ground followed by a trip to the Raj Bhavan to complete formalities, work was underway at a furious pace to complete a makeshift Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for the symbolic visit.
