According to it, the message appeared only when a candidate had not successfully applied during the first stage of the post-result process — obtaining scanned copies of answer books. “… only those candidates who had applied for their scanned answer books during the preceding stage (Answer Books Photocopy) were eligible to avail the subsequent stage of Verification of Issues Observed and Re-evaluation of Answers,” it said.However, CBSE did not address several key issues.Till the filing of this report, it had not disclosed how many of the 1.6 lakh candidates applied for verification of marks and how many sought re-evaluation of answers. It also did not clarify whether technical glitches, login failures, payment problems or portal access issues may have affected the number of applications received.Another unresolved issue concerns the apparent gap between figures released by CBSE at different stages. On May 26, the board had said more than four lakh applications were received for scanned answer books.Monday’s statement referred to requests concerning over 3.8 lakh answer books in the verification and re-evaluation phase. According to it, the message appeared only when a candidate had not successfully applied during the first stage of the post-result process — obtaining scanned copies of answer books. “… only those candidates who had applied for their scanned answer books during the preceding stage (Answer Books Photocopy) were eligible to avail the subsequent stage of Verification of Issues Observed and Re-evaluation of Answers,” it said.However, CBSE did not address several key issues.Till the filing of this report, it had not disclosed how many of the 1.6 lakh candidates applied for verification of marks and how many sought re-evaluation of answers. It also did not clarify whether technical glitches, login failures, payment problems or portal access issues may have affected the number of applications received.Another unresolved issue concerns the apparent gap between figures released by CBSE at different stages. On May 26, the board had said more than four lakh applications were received for scanned answer books.Monday’s statement referred to requests concerning over 3.8 lakh answer books in the verification and re-evaluation phase. NEW DELHI: It’s natural for parents to expect that their children would take care of them in their sunset years, but many cases are being reported of the elderly being abandoned after they transfer property to their offspring.In one such case, the Supreme Court on Monday gave an earful to a man for deserting his 74-year old widowed mother after she transferred her assets to him and hinted that the property gift deed would be cancelled if she is not taken care of.A bench of Justices Manmohan and Vijay Bishnoi said that there was no merit in the appeal filed by the son against the Telangana HC order, which had quashed the gift deed and restored the property to his mother.The court also noted that the son had withdrawn Rs 1.6 crore from her joint account without her consent. The bench said that it was not possible to issue notice on his plea, but granted him one last opportunity to repair the relationship and sit with his mother in mediation.The court said that the facts in the case were very “glaring” and “gross”, and his conduct was unbecoming of a son.The bench referred to the high court findings, which had noted that the son had stopped speaking to his mother and compelled her to leave the house, and he was not ready to take her back.“Look at your conduct. After controlling the assets, you compelled the mother to abandon the house, and you are not ready to take her back. Very glaring findings by the high court. Look what a son has done to his mother. It is very difficult to issue notice in this case,” the bench told the son.The HC, in its order, had said that it was difficult to accept that a son can justify severing ties with his aged mother over such trivial issues. “A mother, who makes unparalleled sacrifices in raising her child, cannot be reduced to estrangement and neglect on account of ordinary family disagreements. Such conduct, particularly when it follows immediately after the last transfer of properties and funds, reveals the true intention behind the transactions. NEW DELHI: In what could further strain the already tense Congress-CPM equation, ED has intensified its probe into the money laundering allegations against the daughter of former Marxist CM of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan.Boosted by a Kerala high court order that money laundering investigations against Vijayan’s daughter Veena are not dependent upon registration of a criminal case against her, ED has switched into higher gear in the politically sensitive case.While sources in the agency denied that the visit of ED chief Rahul Navin was motivated by the opening created by HC for the probe, which was stalled because of the indifference of the Vijayan government, they said that the investigation will gather momentum as a logical corollary of the HC order.This will widen the rift between Congress and CPM, which has taken exception to Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of ED’s charges against Vijayan and his allegation that the agency did not arrest Vijayan because of a secret Marxist-BJP deal. CPM general secretary M A Baby wrote a letter to Congress chief Kharge to protest, and its resentment can only grow as the probe moves closer to Vijayan’s doorstep.The enforcement agency on May 27 searched the former CM’s house, where Veena was also present.The latter is accused of receiving Rs 1.7 crore from Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL). NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court was extremely disappointed on Monday to find that a man — arrested as a 28-year-old in Nov 1983 for shooting dead a person — waited for more than four decades in the Allahabad high court for a decision on his appeal against conviction and a life term awarded by a trial court.A visibly disturbed bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and AS Chandurkar wondered as to what innovative measures could be taken to free the clogged wheels of justice in the Allahabad HC, where long and heavy pendency of pleas has constantly fuelled the filing of appeals in SC for a direction to the HC for expeditious hearing.On learning that the man was in custody for just three months and had been on bail for nearly 43 years, the bench continued his bail during the pendency of his appeal against the high court judgment, which had a gestation period of 41 years.Justice Mishra asked senior advocate Siddharth Dave and advocate Zoheb Hossain as to what could be done to expedite hearings in the HC to unclog the justice delivery system. Dave said one way was to dismiss all prosecution appeals pending for three decades.The bench disagreed and said the basics of adjudication do not permit dismissal just because of long pendency, and no one knows what harm it would cause to public interest if prosecution appeals were dismissed without giving them an opportunity to address the court.In the case in hand, a 28-year-old Vijay Singh was convicted for murder in Dec 1985 by a sessions court in Kanpur, two years after he shot dead his brother. He immediately appealed against the trial court verdict before HC, which, in a 20-page judgment on Feb 9 this year, dismissed his appeal.Singh’s appeal stated, “He is now 72 years old. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court was extremely disappointed on Monday to find that a man — arrested as a 28-year-old in Nov 1983 for shooting dead a person — waited for more than four decades in the Allahabad high court for a decision on his appeal against conviction and a life term awarded by a trial court.A visibly disturbed bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and AS Chandurkar wondered as to what innovative measures could be taken to free the clogged wheels of justice in the Allahabad HC, where long and heavy pendency of pleas has constantly fuelled the filing of appeals in SC for a direction to the HC for expeditious hearing.On learning that the man was in custody for just three months and had been on bail for nearly 43 years, the bench continued his bail during the pendency of his appeal against the high court judgment, which had a gestation period of 41 years.Justice Mishra asked senior advocate Siddharth Dave and advocate Zoheb Hossain as to what could be done to expedite hearings in the HC to unclog the justice delivery system. Dave said one way was to dismiss all prosecution appeals pending for three decades.The bench disagreed and said the basics of adjudication do not permit dismissal just because of long pendency, and no one knows what harm it would cause to public interest if prosecution appeals were dismissed without giving them an opportunity to address the court.In the case in hand, a 28-year-old Vijay Singh was convicted for murder in Dec 1985 by a sessions court in Kanpur, two years after he shot dead his brother. He immediately appealed against the trial court verdict before HC, which, in a 20-page judgment on Feb 9 this year, dismissed his appeal.Singh’s appeal stated, “He is now 72 years old.
