. KOLKATA: : A day after the murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s aide Chandranath Rath, Bengal BJP seniors appealed for calm and restraint on Thursday. Calling the killing heartbreaking, a distraught Adhikari, who reached Barasat medical college late Thursday, said, “Politicians often depend on key people who are not involved in politics”. Bengal had seen “politics of revenge”, Adhikari said, adding, “BJP is not jumping to conclusions immediately. The swearing-in ceremony is due in a few days. We will ensure the killers are punished.” Union minister Sukanta Majumdar, who accompanied Adhikari at the hospital, said DGP Siddh Nath Gupta had reached the spot. Speaking to ANI, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said, “Was this carried out to send a political message or is there some other motive, or is it an act of vendetta? Chennai: VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and leaders of the Left parties flayed Tamil Nadu governor R V Arlekar for not inviting TVK president Vijay to form the govt, calling it a ploy by the BJP-led Union govt to ‘complicate Tamil Nadu politics and Vijay’s position’.Other DMK allies, Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam and MDMK also slammed the governor.Addressing the media on Thursday, Thirumavalavan said that as per the provisions of the Constitution, the governor should immediately invite Vijay to form the govt. “If he fails to do so, it would mean the governor is deliberately trying to complicate and muddy the prevailing political situation in the state,” he said.Thirumavalavan, CPI state secretary M Veerapandian and CPM state secretary P Shanmugam called on DMK president M K Stalin at his residence on Thursday. “We discussed the outcome of the elections. We also spoke in detail about the prevailing political scenario,” said Thirumavalavan, noting that discussions continued regarding TVK leader Vijay’s invitation to VCK and other parties.He reiterated that the party’s frontline leaders would meet and take a decision on TVK’s proposal. “We have received communication expressing their wish to form the govt along with VCK. He (Vijay) has also spoken to me. We are considering that. But we have to see many other factors before arriving at a decision. We cannot rush as the party has certain procedures,” he said.”TVK has emerged as the single largest party in the poll. Mother of RG Kar victim Ratna Debnath KOLKATA: Five BJP workers suffered splinter wounds after bike-borne miscreants allegedly hurled bombs at them near the Panihati home of the RG Kar rapemurder victim late on Wednesday. Police arrested three persons on the basis of CCTV footage. The victim’s mother, who contested and won from Panihati assembly seat on a BJP ticket, condemned the attack. “Several persons who had actively participated in my poll campaign were among those injured,” she told TOI. In Howrah, two functionaries from BJP’s minority cell and a pedestrian were seriously injured after several bombs were hurled at a victory procession on Thursday. SIR KOLKATA: Calcutta HC’s former chief justice TS Sivagnanam resigned from an SIR tribunal in Bengal on Thursday. He cited personal reasons in his resignation letter to Calcutta HC CJ Sujoy Paul and Election Commission, reports Debashis Konar. After clearing 1,777 appeals over 22 days and rejecting none, Justice Sivagnanam said at its present pace, the tribunal would need four years to clear all Kolkata appeals. Initially, Justice Sivagnanam was appointed to the tribunal for petitioners from North 24 Parganas and Kolkata, but he also conducted hearings for cases from Malda, Murshidabad and Birbhum as they were referred to him by Supreme Court. Md Mahatab Sheikh, who won on a Congress ticket from the Farakka assembly seat, was the first to have his name cleared by the tribunal headed by Justice Sivagnanam. Justice Sivagnanam, who will be flying back to Chennai on Friday, said, “I even heard the appeals of Suprabuddha Sen, the grandson of eminent painter Nandalal Bose, and his wife Deepa Sen and restored their voting rights. I approached the appeals with an open mind.Later, I verified the appeals from Kolkata South and Kolkata North. I operated daily from 8.30am to 5pm to clear as many cases as I could, and even on Sundays, I cleared cases without any staff.” “I heard the appeals of the nuns of Missionaries of Charity and allowed 30 or more of them to vote. Although the certificates of the nuns did not match those from their pre-order lives, I did not reject any appeal,” he added. “There are still one lakh pending appeals. There were some problems with the online appeals; judges are accustomed to giving long orders, but the portal has word-count restrictions, so I started giving orders in four to five lines to accommodate this. I am accustomed to e-court proceedings, but not all ex-judges are tech-savvy… The technical support from the state govt for the 19 tribunals was excellent,” he said.
