The governing body confirmed on Monday that it has opened disciplinary proceedings into the incidents that unfolded after the final whistle.In an official statement, FIFA said: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with regard to the post-match incidents.”FIFA did not provide a timeline for the investigation or identify individual players, but the appointment of a disciplinary prosecutor raises the possibility of retrospective sanctions if breaches of the code are established.Earlier reports suggested Paredes had been shown a red card after the match. However, that dismissal did not remain on the official record, meaning he escaped immediate punishment on the night despite the controversy, as per a BBC report.
Violent scenes overshadow Spain’s triumph
Television footage captured several flashpoints as Spain celebrated their World Cup success.Paredes appeared to grab Spain defender Eric Garcia around the throat before shoving him to the ground. When Gavi attempted to intervene, the Argentine midfielder was seen pushing the Barcelona youngster to the turf and grappling with him during the confrontation.Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was also involved after appearing to swing a punch toward Spain captain Rodri before the Manchester City midfielder confronted him.
