JAMMU: Three days after a 30-year-old man was shot dead in police firing, triggering protests by locals, internet services continued to remain suspended across Doda district of J&K for the third consecutive day on Sunday, disrupting communication, online transactions and other services.Officials have not yet issued any statement regarding the restoration of internet services.Locals complained that students, remote workers and job seekers are struggling with the internet shutdown, besides tourists as they can’t make online payments through apps.Sources claimed the internet speed on mobile and the broadband as well has also been restricted in Kishtwar amid the heightened security in the region.On July 16, a police team attempted to stop suspicious individuals in the Jai Valley area on suspicions of cattle smuggling. During the interception, a scuffle broke out and there was an alleged attempt to snatch an officer’s weapon, following which another member of the patrol party opened fire, killing 30-year-old Arif Hussain and injuring three other SOG personnel.Following the death of Arif, an autorickshaw driver, protests erupted in Bhaderwah town of Doda district and surrounding areas.According to police, initial probe has revealed no terrorist links.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Seven injured passengers were taken to hospital, where Manish Kumar died, while rescuers later found the body of an unidentified man inside the mangled bus. In Kashtigarh, a woman died after a shooting stone crashed through her house.Civil administration, police, Army, SDRF teams and local volunteers continued clawing through mud and stones to pull out victims and move families from vulnerable areas.Soldiers built a makeshift bridge from a tree trunk and belaying rope across a swollen stream in flood-ravaged Dhara Sangla village of Surankote, helping rescuers and grieving families carry a young girl’s body home while restoring a vital link cut by flash floods.Amarnath Yatra and pilgrimages to Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra and Shiv Khori in Reasi remained suspended for a second day. IMD issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rain over the next three days.Relentless rain also crippled transport. The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan will no longer function in its present form, the government has concluded hardening its position on the contentious water issue amid little indication of Islamabad discontinuing its covert backing of cross-border terrorism. India is not yet actively considering abandoning the World Bank-brokered 1960 Treaty – an option it still has on the table – but a source speaking on condition of anonymity said it’s not in India’s interest to remain a party to the Treaty anymore. India had formally sought a review and modification of the IWT citing demographic shifts, clean energy priorities and new climate realities, prior to putting the Treaty in “abeyance” last year in retaliation for the Pahalgam terrorist attack. “It would be accurate to say that the IWT in its present form will not function at all. If provisions related to river water sharing have to be reactivated, they will have to be done in a different form. Not in the present form,” said the source, adding India will await further developments before considering the maximalist option of withdrawing altogether from the IWT. The IWT does not have an exit clause, but it’s of significance to India that Article 60 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT) states that a significant violation of a treaty by one party allows other affected parties to suspend the treaty in whole or in part. While India and Pakistan are both not party to the VCLT, India believes that if it invoked customary international law, then Pakistan’s state sponsorship of terrorism could be considered such a breach of obligations. According to Indian authorities, as a sovereign state, India cannot be compelled to stay in a treaty that is demonstrably not in its interest. These assertions come in the middle of efforts by Pakistan to internationalise the IWT issue by citing “unilateral and unlawful” suspension of the Treaty and claiming it threatens the water security and livelihoods of its 240 million citizens. Outside of the Treaty framework, India continues to provide issue flood warnings to Pakistan to ensure protection of lives and property. India believes that Pakistan has created an elaborate victimhood narrative, ignoring the fact that more water of the Indus system is lost in Pakistan due to surface runoff than India’s entire share under the Indus water stream. Sources also point to how Pakistan has since 1976 not built a single large-scale storage project or invested in modern water management, despite receiving nearly 80% of the Indus Basin waters under the Treaty. As far as India is concerned, Pakistan’s problem is water management, and not water availability. Fow India though, the central issue remains Pakistan’s support to cross-border terrorism. India maintains that there is no deadline for keeping the IWT in abeyance. “The Treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. This is the threshold condition,” said a source, adding that Pakistan continues to provide enabling platforms just across the LoC to terrorist groups and individuals banned by the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee. “During this period, India will pursue the optimal utilisation of its legitimate rights through scientific basin management, modern engineering practices, infrastructure modernisation and responsible stewardship of water resources,” said the source.Get the latest India News and Live updates. “Modi Govt has become extremely arrogant”: Arvind Kejriwal on Lathi-Charge against protesters NEW DELHI: AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Centre over the police action against students, calling the Modi government “extremely arrogant” for using force against peaceful protesters.Speaking to reporters, Kejriwal said the youth of the country are “deeply distressed and angry” over repeated failures in the examination system.”The youth of our country are currently deeply distressed and angry. Consider the condition of our country’s examination system: first, there were paper leaks; then, a massive scam emerged in the UPSC evaluation process, resulting in incorrect scores being awarded to students. Subsequently, the NEET examination was conducted and then re-conducted, yet the entire evaluation system was still plagued by errors,” he said.He questioned the lack of response to student grievances. “Students submitted complaint after complaint, but no one paid attention to their concerns. Where are these students and their parents supposed to go? Whom can they approach for justice and redressal? The government simply does not listen,” Kejriwal told reporters.Kejriwal condemned the use of force to suppress the protests.”When students took to the streets to protest, demanding nothing more than corrections and reforms in the examination and education systems, they were met with a lathi-charge. The government has refused to meet with them or engage in dialogue. The Modi government has become extremely arrogant. Students are being subjected to lathi-charges, and tear gas shells are being fired at them. The protest was completely peaceful and had continued for 25 days without a single incident of misconduct or wrongdoing. Despite this, the manner in which the protest was suppressed today is deeply regrettable,” he said.This came as the Monsoon Session of Parliament got off to a stormy start, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessing repeated disruptions over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya.Earlier in the day, Delhi Police urged people to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours or unverified information amid the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest over the alleged NEET exam paper leak.Police also asked protesters to cooperate with security personnel and follow lawful directions to maintain public order.In a post on X, the official account of Delhi Police wrote, “Delhi Police appeals to all protestors to maintain peace, exercise restraint and cooperate with the police in ensuring peace and public order. All participants are requested to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner, refrain from indulging in any unlawful or violent activities and comply with the lawful directions issued by police officers/personnel deployed on duty.””The public is advised not to believe or circulate rumours, misinformation or unverified content through any platform. Citizens are requested to rely only on authentic sources of information and extend their cooperation to Delhi Police in maintaining peace, harmony and public order,” the post read.Earlier, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das said they met Union Health Minister JP Nadda and raised three demands, including resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation of Rs 1 crore to the families of the NEET aspirants, “more than 20 of whom have lost their lives”.He said activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is in a hospital, should be “released immediately”.Das said that the protest will continue till Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.”We met JP Nadda twice. During the meeting, we stated our three demands. First, that Sonam Wangchuk be released immediately… Second, we demand that Dharmendra Pradhan must resign; he should either be dismissed from the Cabinet or resign voluntarily. The protest will continue until his resignation is secured. Third, we demand compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of the NEET aspirants, more than 20 of whom have lost their lives. ‘Power does not last forever’: Rahul Gandhi’s warning to police after tear gas, lathi-charge on NEET protesters NEW DELHI: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday warned police officers that ‘power does not last forever’ and ‘accountability will certainly be enforced’, saying the Constitution, not the government is their ‘master’.His remarks came after police used tear gas and lathi-charged protesters during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) march towards Parliament over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.In a post on X, Rahul said peaceful protest was a fundamental right and warned officials against ‘blindly following orders’ to act against students.Delhi Police used tear gas and mild force to disperse protesters who attempted to march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. It’s not India’s way and it is not the way this should be done. They have legitimate demands. The prime minister should accept these demands and do something about it,” Rahul said in the video.He also alleged that repeated paper leaks had affected millions of students and claimed the government had failed to hold those responsible accountable.The remarks came after police cleared the month-long protest site at Jantar Mantar by Monday evening following clashes during the march towards Parliament. The stage, tents and other structures at the site were dismantled, while police and paramilitary personnel remained deployed in the area.Despite the crackdown, protesters continued gathering on nearby roads and said the agitation would continue until their demands, including the resignation of the education minister, were met. Several protesters alleged they were injured in the police action, while others claimed they were briefly held inside Metro stations and faced restrictions on access to water during the protest.The protest was launched by the CJP over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and examination irregularities.
