JAMMU: Security forces recovered a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during a cordon-and-search operation in J&K’s Rajouri district, officials said Thursday.A joint team of the Army and J&K Police launched the operation on Wednesday, based on a tip-off about suspicious movement in the forested belt of Kallar in Thanamandi.The search party found the explosive — weighing around 3-4 kg and concealed within a steel utensil — in Behrote Kallar Gali area near Dori Maal. Central teams also visited sensitive zones, warning local political functionaries to stay within law or face consequences.In 72 hours, 2,348 alleged troublemakers have been jailed under EC directives, including TMC councillors in Panihati and Burdwan. Another 653 non-bailable warrants were issued. “EC has asked police to ensure no trouble-mongers are outside by dawn,” a source said.Kolkata stands at the centre of deployment. As many as 274 companies of central forces – 22,500 personnel – backed by 7,250 city police will secure 5,172 booths across 1,961 premises, the highest deployment recorded in the city. East Burdwan (263 companies) and Hooghly Rural (236) also drew a heavy presence, reflecting past flashpoints and risk assessments.Nearly 12,000 booths have been classified as critical out of 41,001. Additional CAPF quick-reaction teams will cover Bhangar, Canning, Falta and Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, and Nadanghat and Ketugram in East Burdwan. Representational image Kolkata: Supreme Court-mandated appellate tribunals hearing voter deletions during EC’s SIR of electoral rolls in West Bengal restored voting rights of 1,468 people before Wednesday’s second phase of polls, taking total reinstatements across two rounds in the state to 1,607, officials said on Tuesday.Deletions in second phase stood at six, pushing cumulative removals by tribunals to 14. The six whose names were removed can approach Calcutta HC or SC for relief, EC sources said. Before the first leg on April 23, 139 people had their franchise restored. The 115:1 ratio of restorations to deletions has sharpened scrutiny of the exercise.SIR has cut Bengal’s electorate from 7.6 crore to 6.82 crore. Officials attributed many deletions to dead, absent or shifted voters across 294 seats. The roll revision disenfranchised 27 lakh people under the “logical discrepancy” clause – ranging from spelling errors to surname mismatches and atypical guardianship records during judicial adjudication. West Bengal phase 2″The tribunals included 1,468 voters who were deleted during the adjudication process and excluded six whom judicial officials had earlier included during adjudication. All 1,468 voters can cast their votes on Wednesday,” Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal said.EC sources said those whose rights were upheld have been informed. A public list carries electors’ names, EPIC details, part and serial numbers, districts, assembly constituencies, and booth-level officers’ contacts. Kolkata South recorded the highest inclusions at 677, followed by Kolkata North with 596. Other additions were Howrah 77, Nadia 39, North 24 Parganas 34, South 24 Parganas 30, East Burdwan 8 and Hooghly 7.After the latest inclusions, 142 constituencies voting on Wednesday will have over 3.2 crore electors, EC said. Representational image Kolkata: Supreme Court-mandated appellate tribunals hearing voter deletions during EC’s SIR of electoral rolls in West Bengal restored voting rights of 1,468 people before Wednesday’s second phase of polls, taking total reinstatements across two rounds in the state to 1,607, officials said on Tuesday.Deletions in second phase stood at six, pushing cumulative removals by tribunals to 14. The six whose names were removed can approach Calcutta HC or SC for relief, EC sources said. Before the first leg on April 23, 139 people had their franchise restored. The 115:1 ratio of restorations to deletions has sharpened scrutiny of the exercise.SIR has cut Bengal’s electorate from 7.6 crore to 6.82 crore. Officials attributed many deletions to dead, absent or shifted voters across 294 seats. The roll revision disenfranchised 27 lakh people under the “logical discrepancy” clause – ranging from spelling errors to surname mismatches and atypical guardianship records during judicial adjudication. West Bengal phase 2″The tribunals included 1,468 voters who were deleted during the adjudication process and excluded six whom judicial officials had earlier included during adjudication. All 1,468 voters can cast their votes on Wednesday,” Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal said.EC sources said those whose rights were upheld have been informed. A public list carries electors’ names, EPIC details, part and serial numbers, districts, assembly constituencies, and booth-level officers’ contacts. Kolkata South recorded the highest inclusions at 677, followed by Kolkata North with 596. Other additions were Howrah 77, Nadia 39, North 24 Parganas 34, South 24 Parganas 30, East Burdwan 8 and Hooghly 7.After the latest inclusions, 142 constituencies voting on Wednesday will have over 3.2 crore electors, EC said. Bombay HC Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Tuesday adjourned to 2046 a defamation suit for Rs 20 crore against managing committee members of a south Mumbai housing society by a senior citizen, now aged almost 90, and her daughter. “I do not wish to state anything further except that this matter should not be taken up for the next 20 years,” said Justice Jitendra Jain, sitting singly, when an attempt at a settlement failed and she insisted on pursuing the suit.The dispute allegedly arose about a decade ago.On April 20, the HC requested both sides to try and settle, saying the matter could be worked out with defendants giving an unconditional apology. On Tuesday, when the matter came up as scheduled, the erstwhile committee members, represented by ALMT Legal, said they would unconditionally apologise without prejudice.However, the woman, almost 90, still insisted on going ahead with the legal battle, the HC order, a one-pager, observed on Tuesday.”This is one of the matters where the ego fight between the parties at their fag end of their life clogs the system, which prevents the court from taking up the matters which really requires more priority,” the high court said.The dispute was over alleged collection of funds towards repair and maintenance of the society.
