Gouri Kunj was Kishore Kumar’s peaceful retreat
Built during the peak of Kishore Kumar’s career, Gouri Kunj reflected the singer’s personality rather than his superstar status. Unlike many celebrity homes known for extravagant architecture, the Juhu bungalow was designed as a peaceful retreat with sprawling lawns, open courtyards and abundant greenery.The property prioritised natural light, open spaces and a close connection with nature, offering Kumar a welcome escape from the demands of the Hindi film industry.Surrounded by vintage cars, gardens and quiet corners, Gouri Kunj became the place where Kishore Kumar composed songs, entertained close friends from the film industry and spent time away from the spotlight.
The trees at Gouri Kunj were among his closest companions
Kishore Kumar’s eccentric personality was almost as legendary as his music, and Gouri Kunj reflected that side of him as well.In a widely cited 1985 interview, the singer revealed that he considered the trees in his garden among his closest companions. He reportedly named several of them and often spent hours talking to them while strolling through the lush gardens.His desire for privacy also became part of Bollywood folklore. Outside the entrance gate stood a famous sign that read, “Beware of Kishore,” a humorous warning that perfectly captured his unconventional personality.
A home that inspired music and creativity
Over the years, Gouri Kunj welcomed composers, filmmakers and close collaborators who gathered at the bungalow for informal meetings and musical sessions.Despite being one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, Kishore Kumar preferred a simple and relaxed lifestyle. The bungalow’s airy design, natural surroundings and peaceful ambience mirrored his love for solitude and creativity.For many in the film fraternity, Gouri Kunj became synonymous with the legendary singer himself.
How Virat Kohli ‘s One8 Commune became part of Gouri Kunj
A new chapter began in 2022 when a section of the bungalow was transformed into One8 Commune, the restaurant chain backed by cricketer Virat Kohli.Rather than replacing the property’s heritage, the renovation sought to preserve its architectural identity. The restaurant retains several elements inspired by the original bungalow, including warm wooden interiors, stone finishes, brass detailing, extensive glass panels and lush indoor greenery that echo the home’s garden-retreat ambience.The result is a contemporary dining space that still reflects the openness and connection with nature that defined Kishore Kumar’s beloved residence.
One8 Commune’s expansion plans
The restaurant brand has also been expanding rapidly across India. Speaking to ETRetail in 2024, One8 Commune co-founder Vartik Tihara said the company planned to invest around Rs 35 crore to significantly expand its footprint.At the time, the brand operated nine outlets across six cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata, with plans to open additional outlets in Chennai, Jaipur, Goa, Mohali, Ludhiana, Indore and Hyderabad, along with its first international outlet in Dubai.The company had also announced plans to introduce cafe formats offering healthy bowls, smoothies, high-protein meals and Virat Kohli merchandise as part of its future growth strategy.
