The letter from Kharge and Rahul said govt should prepare a fresh questionnaire through consultations with parties. NEW DELHI: Terming the methodology for caste count adopted in Census 2027 “misleading” as it will not give a headcount of OBCs, leaders of opposition in Parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, have written to PM Narendra Modi demanding the Census questionnaire on caste notified recently be abandoned and a new one be drafted. They underlined that the word “OBC” has not even been used in the Census.In the backdrop of the controversy triggered by the questionnaire, Kharge and Rahul told the PM “your govt” has adopted an “open-ended question” to collect information about caste, and enumerators will have to take for an answer whatever a person replies to the caste question. They argued that a caste is known by different names and sub-castes depending on the region, which would result in one caste being recorded by thousands of names. “This would result in lakhs of castes being registered in the country, and the entire data recorded in the caste census would become useless,” the letter said.“We don’t approve of the caste census being done through this methodology. Govt should cancel the present questionnaire and prepare a fresh one through consultations with political parties, experts, and the public so that a correct headcount of every caste and community is collected and the caste census is precise, relevant, and beneficial,” it said.It said a readymade solution to the problem is that a “drop-down menu” comprising a list of castes be added to the questionnaire. “This very methodology is used for counting SCs and STs (in Census)… This methodology was adopted in the surveys of Bihar and Telangana. The letter from Kharge and Rahul said govt should prepare a fresh questionnaire through consultations with parties. NEW DELHI: Terming the methodology for caste count adopted in Census 2027 “misleading” as it will not give a headcount of OBCs, leaders of opposition in Parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, have written to PM Narendra Modi demanding the Census questionnaire on caste notified recently be abandoned and a new one be drafted. They underlined that the word “OBC” has not even been used in the Census.In the backdrop of the controversy triggered by the questionnaire, Kharge and Rahul told the PM “your govt” has adopted an “open-ended question” to collect information about caste, and enumerators will have to take for an answer whatever a person replies to the caste question. They argued that a caste is known by different names and sub-castes depending on the region, which would result in one caste being recorded by thousands of names. “This would result in lakhs of castes being registered in the country, and the entire data recorded in the caste census would become useless,” the letter said.“We don’t approve of the caste census being done through this methodology. Govt should cancel the present questionnaire and prepare a fresh one through consultations with political parties, experts, and the public so that a correct headcount of every caste and community is collected and the caste census is precise, relevant, and beneficial,” it said.It said a readymade solution to the problem is that a “drop-down menu” comprising a list of castes be added to the questionnaire. “This very methodology is used for counting SCs and STs (in Census)… This methodology was adopted in the surveys of Bihar and Telangana. Flash floods in Nepal have triggered alerts in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar NEW DELHI: In view of the flash flood situation in Nepal, Union home minister Amit Shah Wednesday spoke with CMs of Bihar and UP and assured all help to border districts, including deployment of additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. The administrations of these districts have been put on high alert.“Govt of India stands with Nepal in this hour of crisis. I spoke with CMs of Bihar and UP regarding the disaster in Nepal. In border areas likely to be affected, local administration and rescue teams, along with NDRF, have been placed on high alert,” Shah said on X, expressing condolences to families of those who lost their loved ones in the disaster.Officers of home affairs, external affairs, jal shakti and defence ministries are monitoring the situation.Water level on Nepal-side reservoirs is reducing and the situation is under control. Number of overweight school-going kids and adolescents increased from 2% to 10% between 2000 and 2022. NEW DELHI: With obesity, particularly among children, turning out to be a major health concern and number of overweight school-going kids and adolescents increasing from 2% to 10% between 2000 and 2022, Supreme Court has indicated that the health of people cannot be compromised and sent an ultimatum to Centre to implement its order for putting front-of-pack warning labels on junk food.“If the Union does it on its own, well and good, otherwise we shall proceed to pass further directions …We do not approve the stance of the Union when it says it is not possible to match with international standards, more particularly, developed countries. Should India remain as an underdeveloped country?
