New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani used his address commemorating the 250th anniversary of American Independence to spotlight wealth inequality, taking a thinly veiled swipe at Tesla CEO Elon Musk. According to a report by The Hill, speaking from behind George Washington’s historic desk at City Hall, Mamdani described the US as ‘a city of contradictions within a nation of contradictions’. He added, “We see the wealthiest country in the history of the world, one where children go to sleep hungry, while the world’s first trillionaire hungers for more.” Musk, whose net worth stands near $997 billion after SpaceX’s IPO, was clearly the target of Mamdani’s remarks.

Wealth inequality in focus

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has long argued that billionaires should not exist in a society marked by inequality. He pointed out that the United Nations estimates ending world hunger by 2030 would cost $93 billion annually, a fraction of Musk’s fortune. He also criticised the influence of money in politics, saying: “We see monopolies that dominate every industry and oligarchs who buy elections.

Elon Musk fires back

Musk, who has clashed with Mamdani before, responded publicly to the speech. The Tesla CEO said Mamdani had built his political career on “resentment and redistribution rather than innovation and efficiency.” Musk has previously backed Mamdani’s rivals, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and spent heavily during the last presidential cycle to support Donald Trump’s return to the White House.Mamdani’s remarks reflect his broader push for higher taxes on the ultrawealthy to address New York City’s budget deficit. His comments also highlight the growing tension between progressive leaders and tech billionaires, who are increasingly seen as symbols of inequality.

Zohran Mamdani proposed a tax on billionaires

Recently, Mamdani proposed a new tax targeting some of the most expensive homes in the city. This move of the New York City Mayor impact billionaires including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Dell CEO Michael Dell. The proposal is part of a broader state budget plan which focuses on luxury properties that are not used as primary homes. Officials are of the opinion that the main aim is to raise revenue and ensure that wealthy property owners contribute more, but critics argue it could discourage investment in the city. The tax, referred to as a “pied-à-terre tax,” would apply to homes worth over $5 million that are not the owner’s main residence, says a Business Insider report. It is expected to generate around $500 million annually, though details about how it will be calculated are still unclear.

Zohran Mamdani has previously clashed with Musk

Mamdani has previously clashed with Musk, who backed his challenger, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, in last year’s mayoral race. Despite their differences, Mamdani once remarked that he and Musk share “one goal” — focusing on efficiency and eliminating waste. Last month, Mamdani announced the creation of a Commission on Government Efficiency, modeled in part on Musk’s DOGE office initiative at the White House.
