Image credit: PTI NEW DELHI: India launched a scathing attack on Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council on Monday, accusing it of blocking Afghanistan’s trade routes and carrying out deadly airstrikes that have killed hundreds of civilians.India’s UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish termed Pakistan’s refusal to grant transit access to Afghan merchants as “unprecedented ‘trade and transit terrorism’.” He highlighted that New Delhi has been issuing hundreds of gratis long-term business visas to support impacted Afghan traders.”This cynical closure of access for this landlocked country is in total violation of UN declarations on Landlocked Developing Countries and a clear weaponisation of their trade and transit vulnerabilities,” the ambassador stated.Civilian casualtiesHarish strongly condemned Pakistan’s military operations inside Afghanistan, citing UNAMA reports that documented 372 civilian deaths and 397 injuries from Pakistani airstrikes — a large majority of them during the holy month of Ramadan.”Dressing up a massacre as a military operation does not absolve the perpetrator,” he said. “Killing, maiming and orphaning civilians is not counter-terrorism. Espousing high principles of international law and Islamic solidarity while mercilessly carrying out airstrikes during the holy month of Ramadan is the perfect example of hypocrisy.”He also dismissed Pakistan’s tendency of “blaming neighbours for its own failures” and accused Islamabad of spreading officially sponsored disinformation.Harish noted that Pakistan, in its statement earlier, had questioned the intent of UNAMA and the veracity of the UN Secretary-General’s report. “We would like to stress that support for multilateralism and the United Nations is not an à la carte menu,” he said.India’s aidIn stark contrast to Islamabad’s approach, Harish underscored India’s humanitarian and developmental assistance to Afghanistan, comprising over 50,000 tonnes of wheat, 420 tonnes of medicines and vaccines, alongside relief operations following recent earthquakes.India has also been funding medical treatment for Afghan children with congenital heart diseases, upgrading local healthcare infrastructure, and providing academic scholarships to nearly 3,000 Afghan students since 2023, a cohort that includes 1,000 women.Drawing attention to cultural and social bonds between the two nations, Harish pointed to the joy generated by Afghan cricketers playing in the Indian Premier League, as well as India’s initiatives in hosting a bilateral cricket series.”Sports have a rare power to lift a nation’s spirit. 'Dressing up massacre as military op': India rebukes Pakistan at UN over Afghan strikes

NEW DELHI: A new experimental diabetes jab tested at centres in India, the United States and Mexico helped people with type 2 diabetes lose up to 15% of their body weight while significantly improving blood sugar control, according to Phase-3 trial results published in The Lancet.The study evaluated retatrutide, a once-weekly injectable medicine that targets three hormone receptors involved in blood sugar regulation, appetite control and energy balance. Researchers enrolled 537 adults, including 296 women, with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes across 48 centres and followed them for 40 weeks.At the highest dose, retatrutide reduced HbA1c, a key measure of long-term blood sugar control, by 1.94 percentage points and body weight by 15.3%, compared with reductions of 0.81 percentage points and 2.6%, respectively, in the placebo group. Up to 89% of participants achieved the recommended HbA1c target of below 7%.Dr V Mohan, Chairman of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, described retatrutide as the first triple-action therapy targeting GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptors. “The weight loss seen with retatrutide is among the highest reported with any drug and approaches results typically achieved with bariatric surgery. The HbA1c reduction is also unprecedented,” he said, calling it one of the most promising therapies currently in development.However, Prof Ravinder Goswami, senior endocrinologist at AIIMS Delhi, urged caution in interpreting the findings. He said the rapid emergence of anti-obesity and diabetes drugs has made it difficult to determine which treatments are truly superior. Claims of superiority over existing drugs such as tirzepatide, he said, cannot be established without direct head-to-head clinical trials and real-world evidence. He also warned that very rapid weight loss and blood sugar reduction may carry risks, including gallstones, electrolyte imbalance and muscle loss.Beyond its effects on blood sugar and weight, the drug also improved several cardiovascular risk factors, including triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, suggesting benefits that may extend beyond diabetes control alone.The most common side effects were nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, which were generally mild to moderate and occurred mainly during dose escalation. (File photo) NEW DELHI: Noida International Airport (NIA) will now begin operations next Monday with one fewer launch airline as Air India Express has indefinitely postponed its plans to have flights from there. The new airport will come to life with IndiGo flights, followed by Akasa from the next day. IndiGo will be the biggest operator at NIA for the foreseeable future as Tata-backed AI Group’s mounting losses have led its budget airline — originally one of NIA’s three launch airlines — staying away for now. Which means, NIA will be buzzing with a little less than originally expected life in the first few months.In fact, AI Express has pulled out of Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airport also and now operates only to and from Delhi’s IGIA in the NCR. “AI Group is cutting costs and may not be keen to spend setting up facilities at an airport in an area where it is already present (Delhi IGIA). The flights that have been cut by AI Express due to market demand and network rationalisation include those from Delhi too. The current services can be served from IGIA,” said sources.While NIA like all new airports including Goa Mopa and Navi Mumbai will see a gradual ramp up in flights as primarily IndiGo builds up routes and frequencies with Akasa also doing so on a smaller scale, Hindon has seen a drastic reduction in flights this summer despite being located in the heart of a densely populated area. This has happened due to airlines reducing flights due to the West Asia war’s devastating impact on operating costs and the defence airport’s own limitations.Hindon last winter saw a peak of about 25 daily aircraft movement, meaning 25 arrivals and as many departures. That number kept falling and is now at just eight with IndiGo having five arrivals and as many departures and Star Air at three. (File photo) NEW DELHI: Noida International Airport (NIA) will now begin operations next Monday with one fewer launch airline as Air India Express has indefinitely postponed its plans to have flights from there. The new airport will come to life with IndiGo flights, followed by Akasa from the next day. IndiGo will be the biggest operator at NIA for the foreseeable future as Tata-backed AI Group’s mounting losses have led its budget airline — originally one of NIA’s three launch airlines — staying away for now. Which means, NIA will be buzzing with a little less than originally expected life in the first few months.In fact, AI Express has pulled out of Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airport also and now operates only to and from Delhi’s IGIA in the NCR. “AI Group is cutting costs and may not be keen to spend setting up facilities at an airport in an area where it is already present (Delhi IGIA). The flights that have been cut by AI Express due to market demand and network rationalisation include those from Delhi too. The current services can be served from IGIA,” said sources.While NIA like all new airports including Goa Mopa and Navi Mumbai will see a gradual ramp up in flights as primarily IndiGo builds up routes and frequencies with Akasa also doing so on a smaller scale, Hindon has seen a drastic reduction in flights this summer despite being located in the heart of a densely populated area. This has happened due to airlines reducing flights due to the West Asia war’s devastating impact on operating costs and the defence airport’s own limitations.Hindon last winter saw a peak of about 25 daily aircraft movement, meaning 25 arrivals and as many departures. That number kept falling and is now at just eight with IndiGo having five arrivals and as many departures and Star Air at three. File photo for representation NEW DELHI: Education ministry sources confirmed that confidential question paper packets for the June 21 NEETUG 2026 retest will be airlifted by the Indian Air Force to 18 locations across the country before being transported under security cover to examination centres, while paper setters, moderators and translators have been placed under strict isolation at a secure undisclosed location to prevent any possibility of leaks.The measures form part of one of the most extensive security operations mounted for a national entrance examination, following the cancellation of the NEET-UG examination conducted on May 3 amid allegations of a paper leak.The exam was scrapped on May 12 and the matter was subsequently handed over to the CBI for investigation. Since then, multiple central agencies have been involved in designing a security framework aimed at ensuring a leak-free re-examination.According to govt sources, the IAF will deploy a combination of transport aircraft and Mi-17 helicopters, particularly in regions where rapid movement of question papers is considered critical. The papers will be transported from designated distribution points to examination centres under tight security arrangements.Security agencies, civil authorities and defence establishments have been tasked with maintaining close coordination throughout the operation.
