Heavy rain forecast across several states NEW DELHI: Several states across India are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting intense spells over the Western Himalayan region, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and parts of Karnataka.The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Western Himalayan region, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the week. Kerala, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next two days.In its latest nowcast warning, issued at 1:13 am on Sunday, the IMD warned of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds of 40-60 kmph and moderate rainfall of 5-15 mm per hour in parts of Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The warning is valid until 4:13 am on Sunday.In Meghalaya, South Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills are under an orange warning.In Chhattisgarh, the warning covers Bemetara, Bilaspur, Kabirdham, Mahasamund and Mungeli.In Madhya Pradesh, the affected districts include Anuppur, Balaghat, Chhatarpur, Damoh, Dindori, Guna, Jabalpur, Mandla, Raisen, Sagar, Seoni, Shahdol, Umaria and Vidisha.In Uttarakhand, the warning has been issued for Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat and Pithoragarh.The IMD has advised residents in the affected areas to remain alert, avoid taking shelter under trees or weak structures, check road and traffic conditions and avoid unnecessary travel. It projects the population aged 60 years and above to cross 230 million by 2036, further increasing demand for long-term healthcare.Despite expansion in healthcare infrastructure and medical education, shortages persist. India has 9.6 doctors per 10,000 population, compared with the global average of 18.3. It has 27.2 nursing personnel per 10,000 against 40.5 globally, 15.9 hospital beds per 10,000 compared with 33, and only 4 MRI scanners per million people, against the global average of 19, the report says.According to the report, AI is not intended to replace doctors but to multiply specialist capacity by assisting in diagnosis, clinical decision-making and screening. NIA has arrested another key accused in connection with the seizure of a large consignment of illegal explosives in Kerala’s Malappuram district. NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another accused in connection with the seizure of a large consignment of illegal explosives in Kerala’s Malappuram district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 10, officials said on Sunday.The accused, identified as Haris TA, was arrested on Saturday from Manjeri in Malappuram. According to the NIA, Haris is a main conspirator and was involved in the illegal procurement of the explosives seized in the case.The case relates to the seizure of 89,600 explosive sticks and 10,500 shock tubes (NONEL) from a lorry parked at the compound of Farha Hollow Bricks Company on the Chemmad-Thalappara Road in Malappuram on February 7, 2026.The lorry was intercepted by Kerala Police, who arrested three people linked to the consignment. The NIA said the accused did not have the required licences or permissions to possess or transport the explosives.The agency subsequently re-registered the case and took over the investigation in April 2026. NIA has arrested another key accused in connection with the seizure of a large consignment of illegal explosives in Kerala’s Malappuram district. NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another accused in connection with the seizure of a large consignment of illegal explosives in Kerala’s Malappuram district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 10, officials said on Sunday.The accused, identified as Haris TA, was arrested on Saturday from Manjeri in Malappuram. According to the NIA, Haris is a main conspirator and was involved in the illegal procurement of the explosives seized in the case.The case relates to the seizure of 89,600 explosive sticks and 10,500 shock tubes (NONEL) from a lorry parked at the compound of Farha Hollow Bricks Company on the Chemmad-Thalappara Road in Malappuram on February 7, 2026.The lorry was intercepted by Kerala Police, who arrested three people linked to the consignment. The NIA said the accused did not have the required licences or permissions to possess or transport the explosives.The agency subsequently re-registered the case and took over the investigation in April 2026. Meta must follow Indian law, not just global rules: Govt after MeitY talks NEW DELHI: Meta’s platforms must comply with Indian law and cannot be governed solely by the company’s global policies, government sources said on Sunday following a series of meetings between the social media giant and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Officials also clarified that it would be factually incorrect to say the government had “directed Meta to completely overhaul its algorithm”.The government’s focus, according to sources, is on ensuring that Meta’s content policies, platform guidelines and moderation systems are aligned with Indian law. While concerns remain, officials said the discussions are aimed at securing concrete changes from the company rather than simply seeking assurances.ANI sources said India’s cultural context is not always fully understood by teams based outside the country. They said Meta needs greater local input, including stronger understanding of Indian languages and cultural nuances, to improve content moderation in India.The latest clarification came after a meeting on Friday between Meta’s technical team and MeitY officials, during which the company explained its existing systems for handling harmful content online. Technical discussions between the two sides remain underway, with another round of meetings expected next week, sources said.On child sexual abuse material (CSAM), government sources told ANI that there is zero tolerance and zero compromise.Officials said allowing such material to remain on Meta’s platforms would amount to a serious violation of rules. They said the company needs to adopt stronger and more proactive measures, with concrete action expected instead of assurances.The issue was also raised during earlier meetings between Meta’s global team and government officials, amid wider concerns over the company’s content moderation systems.The government has also raised concerns over deepfakes involving prominent personalities.ANI sources said content posted from authorised or verified handles should not be incorrectly identified as deepfakes.
