There is something slightly ironic about bathrooms. We clean them because they are supposed to be one of the most hygienic spaces in the house, yet some of the things we touch every day can quietly become the dirtiest. The obvious suspects are easy to remember. The toilet bowl, floor and shower get most of the attention. But germs do not exactly care whether a surface looks clean. Some of the most overlooked spots are the things you reach for without thinking, often several times a day.Here are seven bathroom germ hotspots that deserve a little more attention.
Your toothbrush holder
You rinse your toothbrush, put it back and move on. The holder, meanwhile, can collect water, toothpaste residue and whatever settles around it. Because it often stays damp, the bottom and inner edges can become particularly grimy. Give the holder a proper wash regularly instead of only wiping around it. And if several toothbrushes share one holder, make sure their bristles are not constantly touching each other.
The tap handles
You wash your hands and then turn off the tap. That means the same hands that were just dirty may have touched the tap handle before you washed them properly. If the tap is not cleaned regularly, that little handle can become an easy place for germs to linger. The same applies to handles on bathroom cabinets and drawers.
The flush handle or button
The toilet gets cleaned, but the thing you touch immediately after using it can be forgotten. Whether your toilet has a traditional handle or a push button, it gets touched frequently. Give it a wipe during your regular bathroom cleaning instead of focusing only on the bowl.
The shower curtain
A shower curtain spends much of its life getting wet and drying slowly. That makes the bottom edge and folds particularly easy to overlook. If you use a fabric curtain, wash it according to its care instructions. For plastic or waterproof curtains, clean the surface and pay attention to the lower portion where water and soap residue tend to collect.
The bath mat
It looks harmless because it is there to catch the water from your feet. But that also means it regularly absorbs moisture. A damp mat left on the bathroom floor can start smelling musty and become an easy place for unwanted microbial growth. Wash it regularly and allow it to dry properly between uses.
Your loofah or shower sponge
That mesh loofah hanging in the shower may look clean because it gets covered in soap every day. But it also stays wet for long periods. Rinse it thoroughly after use, squeeze out excess water and allow it to dry rather than leaving it bunched up in a damp corner. Replace it when it starts looking worn or develops an unpleasant smell.
The bathroom door handle
