In a bid to make rail travel greener, Indian Railways has developed a solar-assisted passenger coach that uses rooftop solar panels to power essential onboard amenities such as lights, fans and mobile charging points. It’s a very cool and environmentally-positive move. According to a TOI report, the pilot project has been developed by the North Central Railway (NCR) in Prayagraj. It is expected to serve as a model for future energy-efficient passenger coaches nationwide. The innovation is part of Indian Railways’ broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy across its operations.Understanding solar-assisted coachThe newly developed coach has been equipped with high-efficiency rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. It can generate nearly 7 kWp. Instead of replacing the existing electrical system, the solar installation works alongside it by supplying clean electricity to charge the coach’s battery bank.
