File photo NEW DELHI: The EC has introduced a QR code-based verification system to regulate access of persons to counting halls on May 4, the day of poll results. The system will be extended to all future elections to Lok Sabha and state/UT assemblies.As part of counting arrangements on May 4, a three-tier security mechanism has been prescribed for verification of identity at counting centres. NEW DELHI: Today’s Chanakya Thursday predicted a big win for BJP in West Bengal, while News18 in its exit poll has forecast a tight contest with an edge to BJP.In Tamil Nadu, Today’s Chanakya gave a majority to the DMK and its allies where actor Vijay-led TVK has emerged as an X factor that may push the AIADMK-BJP combine to third position.While most exit polls have given BJP an edge in West Bengal, Today’s Chanakya has forecast a massive lead for the party by giving it 48% votes compared to the governing TMC’s 38% with a margin of 3% for both parties on either side. It will translate into 192 (plus or minus 11) seats for BJP and 100 (plus or minus 11) for TMC in the 294-member assembly, it has said. News 18 has predicted 143 to 163 seats for BJP and 127 to 147 for TMC, with the two parties tipped to get 44% and 43% votes respectively.In Tamil Nadu, Today’s Chanakya said, DMK’s alliance could get 125 seats and TVK 63 in the 234-member assembly. It has given an edge to UDF in Kerala and predicted a landslide victory for BJP in Assam, forecasts which are in line with the general direction of other polls. FIle photo NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday reserved verdict on the anticipatory bail of Congress neta Pawan Khera in a criminal case against him by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife for alleging she possessed multiple passports and undisclosed offshore properties.A bench of justices J K Maheshwari and A S Chandurkar concluded the hearing on plea of Khera who challenged a Gauhati HC verdict dismissing his pre-arrest bail petition.Pressing for bail, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the bench the CM had been making several objectionable remarks against the Congress functionary, which showed that he will be arrested even though custodial interrogation is not needed in the case.Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for Assam government, opposed the plea and said Khera showed fake and doctored copies of passports of the CM’s wife. The latest National Statistics Office (NSO) data shows that the transition remains uneven — from near parity in school enrolment to a gradual shift in higher education outcomes.The ‘women and men in India 2025’ report shows female gross enrolment ratio (GER) exceeding male GER at all school stages and women accounting for 51.48% of total higher education pass-outs, even as the overall literacy gender gap remains at 14.4 percentage points.The data underscores a generational shift.While the overall literacy gap remains wide, it narrows sharply to 3.8 percentage points among youth aged 15–24, reflecting faster gains among younger cohorts.This marks a steady progression from earlier decades, with female literacy rising from 30.6% in 1981 to over 70% in recent estimates, though still trailing male literacy levels.At the school level, gender parity has effectively been achieved across primary to higher secondary stages, with girls not only matching, but exceeding boys in enrolment. Under the national education policy (NEP) framework, female enrolment is higher across foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary stages, while adjusted net enrolment rates (ANER) for girls at the secondary level have also surpassed boys in recent years.Dropout rates for both genders have declined between 2022-23 and 2024-25, with sharper reductions at preparatory and middle stages, although secondary-stage dropouts remain comparatively higher.In higher education, the trend is gradually tilting in favour of women. Female GER increased from 28.5% to 30.2%, compared to a smaller rise for males from 28.3% to 28.9% between 2021-22 and 2022-23. Women now account for a marginal majority of total pass-outs, with particularly high representation at advanced levels such as MPhil (76.14%), and over half of undergraduate and postgraduate completions.However, participation remains uneven across disciplines. Women are concentrated in arts, sciences, social sciences and medical streams, while men continue to dominate engineering, technology, IT and management, reflecting persistent segmentation in career pathways.Learning outcomes show a mixed pattern. Girls consistently outperform boys in languages and board examination pass percentages, while boys perform better in mathematics, particularly at higher grades. At the same time, female participation in higher education now spans over half of total enrolments in several disciplines, signalling broader access even as subject choices remain skewed.Despite improvements in access and participation, structural gaps remain. The mean years of schooling for women stands at 7.4 years, compared to an overall average of 8.4 years, indicating earlier drop-off in educational attainment.
