As the 72nd National Film Awards were announced this year, several criticisms emerged on social media, with netizens saying that there were many other deserving titles.Coming to Tamil cinema, many film lovers argued that acclaimed Tamil films such as Karthi’s ‘Meiyazhagan’ and Vijay Sethupathi’s thriller ‘Maharaja’ deserved the Best Tamil Film honour. Others felt that actors including Vijay Sethupathi, Karthi, Arvind Swami, and Anurag Kashyap should have been recognised instead.Actor Dhanush has now spoken publicly about the debate surrounding his wins at the 72nd National Film Awards. The actor received a Special Mention for his performance in ‘Captain Miller’, while his directorial ‘Raayan’ was honoured with the Best Tamil Film award.As reported by India Today, speaking at a public event on Sunday, Dhanush responded to the criticism with humility.Talking about ‘Raayan’, Dhanush said, “‘Raayan’ received the National Film Award, but I believe there were films released that year which were better. I completely understand and respect the emotions of the fans who supported those films.”
Dhanush on films that missed national recognition
Dhanush recalled one of his earliest films and said,”Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam came out many years ago. Back then, everyone believed I would win an award for that performance. I was young and shared the same hope, but it didn’t happen. Then came Pudhupettai…”He added, “You all told me I’d win again, but I didn’t,” before listing 3, Mayakkam Enna, Vada Chennai, Karnan, Maryan, and Raanjhanaa among the performances that went unrewarded despite receiving critical acclaim.
‘Celebrate It,’ Dhanush tells fans
The actor said he never viewed awards as something that could be achieved through expectation alone.“Some things simply fall into place on their own, no matter how hard you try; that is exactly how it happened for me. I got the opportunity. Regardless of how the film itself turned out, the effort I put into it was genuine. As a Tamilian, I have received two more National Awards; don’t brush this aside, celebrate it,” the ‘Raayan’ actor said.

Soon after the winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced on July 18, Dhanush shared a heartfelt message on social media.He wrote, “This is my third National Award as an actor and my first National Award as a director. This recognition for Captain Miller is especially close to my heart because I have always believed it to be my finest performance to date. Receiving a Special Mention for a performance I hold so dearly makes this honour even more meaningful. And a first is always unforgettable. Winning my very first National Award as a Director for Raayan is a blessing I will cherish forever.“On the professional front, Dhanush is preparing for the release of ‘Om – Chapter 1’. The film is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and features Mammootty in a key role alongside the actor.
