Congress rejects NC’s offer to join J&K cabinet, citing principled stand to stay out until statehood is restored. SRINAGAR: Congress Thursday turned down a proposal by National Conference (NC) to join the Omar Abdullah govt in J&K, saying the party would not deviate from its stand to stay away from the ministry until statehood was restored.“There is no doubt that NC is interested in seeing Congress join the cabinet. But Congress has taken a principled stand that until statehood is restored, it will not join the J&K govt. We have taken the usurpation of constitutional rights seriously. Centre picks 160 district hospitals for 50% boost in emergency, trauma care capacity by 2027 NEW DELHI: The Centre has identified 160 district hospitals for the first phase of a programme to increase emergency and trauma care capacity by 50%, with the facilities targeted for strengthening by March 2027, as the government moves to implement key health-sector announcements made in the Union Budget 2026-27.Union Health Minister J P Nadda reviewed the progress of the projects on Thursday and directed officials to ensure time-bound implementation, regular monitoring and coordination between ministries, states and institutions.A total of 613 district hospitals have been categorised for phased implementation after a gap analysis against Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). Training has already begun, covering areas such as wellness, yoga and operation of medical and assistive devices. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is working with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to scale up the programme.The government plans to add 1 lakh allied health professionals over five years across 10 disciplines. Consultations have been held with states, hospitals, industry and regulators, while funding options, including a PPP model, are being examined.Under Biopharma SHAKTI, the Centre aims to develop a network of more than 1,000 accredited clinical trial sites through a proposed ₹500-crore hub-and-spoke model, supported by stronger digital systems and a central trial facilitation agency.The Centre is also pursuing five Regional Medical Hubs to promote medical value tourism, with five priority disease areas identified for developing evidence-based integrative treatment protocols.For drug regulation, the CDSCO is being strengthened with a dedicated scientific review cadre and specialist workforce. NEW DELHI: NTPC chairman and managing director Gurdeep Singh on Thursday said the company was working to increase its operating capacity to 244 GW and incur capital expenditure of nearly Rs 17 lakh crore by 2037 to expand across the entire energy value chain.Speaking at company’s annual general meeting, Singh said the next decade will be one of the most significant periods of growth in NTPC’s history, with rising electricity demand requiring a combination of scale, flexibility and reliability.NTPC’s revised plan envisages cumulative capex of around Rs 16.9 lakh crore up to FY37 across thermal, hydro and pumped storage, renewables, battery storage, mining and nuclear. NTPC generated 432 billion units of electricity in FY26, accounting for about 24% of India’s total generation.Singh said NTPC was building an integrated energy platform spanning conventional generation, renewable energy, storage, nuclear, mining, power trading and new energy technologies.Nuclear power is expected to be a major growth area, with NTPC aiming to contribute around 30 GW towards India’s 100-GW nuclear capacity target by 2047. Derek O’Brien falls during chaos at TMC office Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien fell down a staircase amid a confrontation at the party’s office in Kolkata on Thursday, later alleging that more than 150 police personnel had “illegally trespassed” into the building.”At 3.30 pm the Kolkata Municipal Corporation came with an illegal notice backed by the Kolkata police. The notice was not signed. The notice said a photograph was attached, but there was no photograph. The notice did not have any details… For over one and a half hours, we tried to explain to them. Then they illegally trespassed into the building. More than 150 police officers went in there. They pushed and shoved us on the staircase,” O’Brien said, addressing reporters.He further claimed that TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was present during the incident and linked the police action to the party’s annual students’ rally scheduled for the following day. O’Brien also alleged that police had “illegally” picked up 10 to 15 TMC workers.”They pushed and shoved us on the staircase. Abhishek was also there. This was done today because tomorrow is the students’ annual rally of the Trinamool Congress. This is all BJP and BJP’s B-team who are playing.
