NEW DELHI: The political row over an alleged “fish feast” at a Congress event in Ayodhya escalated on Tuesday, with Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai filing a defamation case against Yogi Adityanath, alleging that the chief minister’s remarks had “hurt his faith.”Rai approached the MP-MLA court in Lucknow, alleging that the chief minister’s remarks were baseless and had hurt his religious sentiments. NEW DELHI: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Tuesday restrained Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra from alienating his assets and stayed an earlier order approving a repayment plan that would have allowed him to settle claims arising from personal guarantees for about Rs 6.5 crore.A five-member special bench headed by NCLT president Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal said there was no clear majority in favour of the plan and the August 25 order could not be implemented.”It is manifest that as per Section 419(5) of the Companies Act, there is no clear majority view capable of being given effect to. Therefore, the order dated August 25, 2026 of the third member, Nilesh Sharma, Member (Judicial) is stayed,” the bench said.The tribunal directed that Chandra, as the personal guarantor, “shall not alienate any assets whatsoever either directly or indirectly” and issued notices to all parties.The restraint was sought by solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for dissenting creditors including LIC Housing Finance, Canara Bank and Union Bank. He warned that the “substratum” of the matter could otherwise be lost.”We will hear you at length,” the bench told Chandra’s counsel after he sought to make a brief submission. The matter will next be heard on September 23.The dispute is also before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), where dissenting lenders have challenged the repayment plan. A three-member bench led by officiating chairperson Justice Yogesh Khanna heard the matter on Tuesday after Mehta sought time to decide whether the lenders would pursue the appeal.The case follows conflicting views in Chandra’s personal insolvency proceedings. An original two-member NCLT bench delivered dissenting judgments in September 2025, with Ashok Kumar Bhardwaj approving the plan and Reena Sinha Puri rejecting it over alleged irregularities in the admission and voting on claims.Third member Nilesh Sharma subsequently approved the plan on August 25, subject to changes involving disputed claims. NEW DELHI: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Tuesday restrained Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra from alienating his assets and stayed an earlier order approving a repayment plan that would have allowed him to settle claims arising from personal guarantees for about Rs 6.5 crore.A five-member special bench headed by NCLT president Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal said there was no clear majority in favour of the plan and the August 25 order could not be implemented.”It is manifest that as per Section 419(5) of the Companies Act, there is no clear majority view capable of being given effect to. Therefore, the order dated August 25, 2026 of the third member, Nilesh Sharma, Member (Judicial) is stayed,” the bench said.The tribunal directed that Chandra, as the personal guarantor, “shall not alienate any assets whatsoever either directly or indirectly” and issued notices to all parties.The restraint was sought by solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for dissenting creditors including LIC Housing Finance, Canara Bank and Union Bank. He warned that the “substratum” of the matter could otherwise be lost.”We will hear you at length,” the bench told Chandra’s counsel after he sought to make a brief submission. The matter will next be heard on September 23.The dispute is also before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), where dissenting lenders have challenged the repayment plan. A three-member bench led by officiating chairperson Justice Yogesh Khanna heard the matter on Tuesday after Mehta sought time to decide whether the lenders would pursue the appeal.The case follows conflicting views in Chandra’s personal insolvency proceedings. An original two-member NCLT bench delivered dissenting judgments in September 2025, with Ashok Kumar Bhardwaj approving the plan and Reena Sinha Puri rejecting it over alleged irregularities in the admission and voting on claims.Third member Nilesh Sharma subsequently approved the plan on August 25, subject to changes involving disputed claims. Punjab Health and family welfare minister Balbir Singh CHANDIGARH: Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) has covered 12,467 treatments for severe sepsis and septic shock at a cost of Rs 51.58 crore till September 1, highlighting the growing medical and financial burden of the life-threatening condition.According to data released by the Punjab health department, 10,961 treatments for severe sepsis accounted for Rs 44.33 crore, while 1,506 septic-shock treatments involved expenditure of Rs 7.25 crore. Health and family welfare minister Balbir Singh said timely recognition was critical as sepsis could rapidly progress to organ failure and septic shock.Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to an infection becomes dysregulated, potentially causing tissue damage, organ failure and death. Almost any infection can lead to sepsis, with infections affecting the lungs, urinary tract, skin and gastrointestinal tract among common sources.“When sepsis leads to serious circulatory problems and inadequate blood flow to vital organs, the patient may progress to septic shock,” Singh said.Patients with septic shock may require intensive care, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, medicines to maintain blood pressure, oxygen or mechanical ventilation and other organ-support measures. The cost of such treatment can rise rapidly, making financial coverage crucial for families.Under the MMSY, eligible families receive cashless health coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh annually. The government said the scheme is intended to ensure that financial constraints do not delay access to critical treatment.Doctors also flagged the particular vulnerability of newborns to sepsis. Dr Shashi Kant Dhir, professor and head of the department of paediatrics at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, said even subtle changes in a newborn’s behaviour could indicate serious illness.Premature and low-birth-weight babies can deteriorate rapidly, he said. Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, feeling cold and changes in breathing should prompt immediate medical assessment.Antibiotics are essential when bacterial infections are suspected or confirmed, but their inappropriate use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday invoked its special powers and quashed all FIRs registered against student protesters in different parts of the country during the NEET paper leak protests.The bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana said the order had been passed in view of the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case and shall not be treated as a precedent.The apex court said it was invoking its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution considering the future of the students who bona fide participated in the protests.The court, however, allowed Delhi Police to pursue the FIR against 2,873 individuals who were present at the Jantar Mantar protests, citing their serious criminal antecedents.This comes a day after the Centre moved the apex court seeking to quash FIRs registered against student protesters over alleged violence during protests against the NEET paper leak in Delhi and other states.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Delhi Police, also informed the apex court that the Centre remained committed to fulfilling all three assurances given to CJP leaders during their meeting with the government.Under the first assurance, the Centre would not pursue FIRs registered between July 20 and July 25. The second was that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the matter.The third assurance was that the government would provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide allegedly in connection with the NEET paper leak.”The Centre is committed to honouring the assurance given to CJP leaders to provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide after the NEET exam cancellation; however, three months are needed to work out the modalities,” Mehta told the Supreme Court.”As of now, we are committed to fulfilling all three assurances,” he added.Following the apex court hearing, Cockroach Janata Party called off its September 5 protest against the Centre for failing to honour the promises made to persuade the group to withdraw the agitation.”I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the Government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today’s order,” CJP co-convener Sourav Das said during a hearing in the Supreme Court.How CJP reactedAfter the hearing, Das said welcomed SC’s order but also questioned why were these ‘hardend criminals’ allowed to roam freely in the society in the first place.”Regarding the Delhi Police’s apprehension, based on facial recognition technology, that around 2,800 alleged hardened criminals were present at the protest site, we argued during negotiations with the government that if these 2,800 hardened criminals were indeed present, the first question was why they were roaming freely in society in the first place,” Das said while talking to reporters.Join conversationView All Comments →Share your thoughts in the commentsInsightfulAgreeDisagreeSkepticalConcerningPromisingWorth ReadingBig DevelopmentPost CommentBe respectful · TOI community guidelines”Secondly, if they committed any heinous crimes, such as rape, murder, or other grave offences, at the protest site, then they should be prosecuted, investigated, and imprisoned,” he added.During a hearing on August 18 on petitions related to the student protests, Supreme Court had indicated that it was inclined to quash the FIRs by exercising its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.The indication came after the court was informed of legal complications in withdrawing the FIRs.
