CHENNAI: Signs of unrest within Dravidian majors after the recent Tamil Nadu assembly poll debacle intensified Monday, even as DMK president MK Stalin and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) assured cadres the two parties would bounce back. While AIADMK veteran S Semmalai quit after 45 years, former DMK minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan announced he was taking a short break from politics. Semmalai, who held multiple posts in AIADMK under MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, said he was leaving because of EPS’s “dictatorial approach” that was shrinking the party’s strength. The EPS camp dismissed his resignation as insignificant. DMK’s PTR said he would be travelling abroad for lectures and events he was unable to attend during his stint as minister. He would utilise the time to write a book as well. . NEW DELHI: The Indian Patent Office has refused to grant a patent to US pharmaceutical firm AbbVie on its Hepatitis C combination therapy glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, marketed globally as Mavyret. The combination therapy is considered a key treatment for Hepatitis C, and the availability of affordable generic versions remains critical for widening patient access. “The order demonstrates the importance of India’s patent safeguards, including pre-grant opposition, in preventing unnecessary patent monopolies that can delay access to medicines,” public health advocacy group Third World Network (TWN) said. The decision is significant as the rejection prevents AbbVie from securing a secondary patent on the composition of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, which, if approved, could have prolonged the company’s market exclusivity by another five years, a TWN lawyer said. The rejection was under Sec 15 of Patents Act. The order records that AbbVie did not file reply statements or evidence in response to the pre-grant oppositions, and later informed the patent office that it wished to abandon the application. The decision’s significance is amplified by AbbVie’s licensing agreement with Medicines Patent Pool, under which India was excluded as a sales territory. KOLKATA: Bengal’s BJP govt moved Monday to stamp out religion-based aid such as honorariums for mosque functionaries and priests, with CM Suvendu Adhikari asserting that “it was not the govt’s job to distribute doles to imams, muezzins and purohits”.”Financial assistance to imams, muezzins and purohits is being discontinued. A fresh notification will be issued listing the schemes that are being discontinued,” Urban development and women and child affairs minister Agnimitra Paul said after a cabinet meeting where the decision was taken. The payments will be stopped from next month.Such stipends had been introduced by Mamata Banerjee-led TMC govt. They were being provided through the information and cultural affairs department, and minority affairs and madrassa education department.Adhikari doubled down on the decision to halt the payments. “Our job is to improve education, to give jobs to youths. We have stopped every religious dole. We will provide Vivekananda scholarship to meritorious and poor students from all communities. There will not be any appeasement politics in Bengal,” he said.BJP welcomed the move. “The Constitution does not allow discrimination among communities based on religion. Govt will work for the people of Bengal. KOLKATA: Bengal’s BJP govt moved Monday to stamp out religion-based aid such as honorariums for mosque functionaries and priests, with CM Suvendu Adhikari asserting that “it was not the govt’s job to distribute doles to imams, muezzins and purohits”.”Financial assistance to imams, muezzins and purohits is being discontinued. A fresh notification will be issued listing the schemes that are being discontinued,” Urban development and women and child affairs minister Agnimitra Paul said after a cabinet meeting where the decision was taken. The payments will be stopped from next month.Such stipends had been introduced by Mamata Banerjee-led TMC govt. They were being provided through the information and cultural affairs department, and minority affairs and madrassa education department.Adhikari doubled down on the decision to halt the payments. “Our job is to improve education, to give jobs to youths. We have stopped every religious dole. We will provide Vivekananda scholarship to meritorious and poor students from all communities. There will not be any appeasement politics in Bengal,” he said.BJP welcomed the move. “The Constitution does not allow discrimination among communities based on religion. NEW DELHI: With countries developing new defence systems at a faster pace amid ongoing conflicts, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal (ACM) A P Singh has a word of advice for Indian defence agencies involved in research and development (R&D): they must “innovate at the speed of relevance”.“We need to increase the speed because the system has to come in before it becomes irrelevant. While we build the systems today, we must be doing R&D on systems of tomorrow. It is good to have, maybe 85-90% capability of the system on time than to wait for that 100% and delay it beyond its relevance period,” the IAF chief stressed while speaking at a recent seminar co-hosted by think-tank CAPSS and Indian Military Review publication here.Addressing senior military officials, IAF chief said for any modern aerial threat, complete domain awareness is key, and there should be “total coordination” among the three services. “We have seen what happens… if you don’t have domain awareness, you don’t know where your people are and where others are. We’ve seen what happened to F-15s (US fighter jets) in Kuwait. The fratricide part. So, we cannot afford to have things like that,” ACM Singh said. He was referring to the incident on March 1 in which “three US F-15E Strike Eagles went down over Kuwait due to an apparent friendly fire”, according to the US CENTCOM.He also highlighted the importance of drones, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and counter-UAS. “There is no denying that the battlefield has shifted. We are shifting totally from very concentrated air power to a sort of decentralised and autonomous power. So, all rules of air power will apply when you use UAS. And they are no more eyes in the sky. They are like claws in the sky now,” he said.Recalling IAF’s key role during Op Sindoor, Singh said, “I think we did reasonably well in Op Sindoor.
