NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday appointed senior IAS officer Lokhande Prashant Sitaram as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) amid a major row over the board’s new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.He will succeed Rahul Singh, who was transferred out hours earlier along with then-CBSE secretary Himanshu Gupta.According to an official notification, Singh will now be posted in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.(This is a developing story)

NEW DELHI: India’s ambassador to Qatar, Vipul, has been appointed the next Indian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, govt said in an official announcement on Tuesday. An IFS officer of 1998 batch, Vipul is expected to take up the new assignment soon. The appointment is significant as this is the first time that a non-Muslim will head India’s diplomatic mission in Riyadh. While India has mostly appointed career diplomats as ambassador to the Kingdom, political appointees have also served as envoys in Riyadh. NEW DELHI: When 60-year-old Venkata Subramani Mohana took oath on Tuesday as a judge of the Supreme Court, she became part of a small group of 12 women judges among a total of 289 who have been judges of the SC in its over 76-year journey. Justice Mohana is the second advocate to be elevated as a judge of the SC after Justice Indu Malhotra.SC had all-male judges till Oct 6, 1989, when Justice Fathima Beevi became the first woman judge of the apex court during the tenure of CJI E S Venkataramiah, whose daughter Justice B V Nagarathna is set to become the first woman CJI next year. The second woman judge in the SC was Justice Sujata Manohar, who took oath as SC judge on Nov 8, 1994, during the tenure of CJI A M Ahmadi and retired on Aug 27, 1999. Since 2000, there have been 10 more woman judges. First among them was Justice Ruma Pal, who was elevated as SC judge on Jan 28, 2000 and missed being the first woman CJI by a whisker to retire as the most senior judge in June 2006. It took the collegium more than a decade to recommend the appointment of another woman Supreme Court judge in Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, who took oath on Apr 30, 2010 during the tenure of CJI K G Balakrishnan.CJI N V Ramana’s tenure created a record. NEW DELHI: IndiGo on Tuesday said it will temporarily discontinue its wide-body flight operations to and from Manchester from Aug 31, citing longer flight routes due to airspace restrictions amid the Iran conflict, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, and forex volatility.The budget airline will return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had taken on damp lease (hired along with operating crew) from Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025. IndiGo’s Abhijit Dasgupta said: “We inducted these aircraft to fast-track our connectivity to high-potential long-haul destinations and witnessed a very encouraging response. NEW DELHI: IndiGo on Tuesday said it will temporarily discontinue its wide-body flight operations to and from Manchester from Aug 31, citing longer flight routes due to airspace restrictions amid the Iran conflict, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, and forex volatility.The budget airline will return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had taken on damp lease (hired along with operating crew) from Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025. IndiGo’s Abhijit Dasgupta said: “We inducted these aircraft to fast-track our connectivity to high-potential long-haul destinations and witnessed a very encouraging response. NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has closed a coal block allocation case registered by CBI more than a decade ago against Hindalco Industries and discharged the company and its former president and CEO S K Tamotia and former general manager (Corporate Affairs) PRS Mani, reports Koushiki Saha.Special judge (PC Act) Dheeraj Mor held that prima facie, no case of criminal breach of trust, cheating or criminal conspiracy was made out, and CBI failed to establish any illegality by the accused. The accused are entitled to be discharged as there is “neither any evidence on record nor any justifiable reason to infer that they entered into criminal conspiracy to commit any illegal act”, the court said in its May 30 order.The case related to the allocation of Talabira-I coal block in Odisha to Hindalco in 1994, with the FIR filed in Jan 2015. CBI alleged the company violated allocation conditions by using coal from the block in its existing 67.5 MW captive power plant at Hirakud instead of limiting its use to proposed power projects.CBI alleged that the company extracted 4.80 million tonnes of coal beyond its estimated reserves of 15 million tonnes, deriving undue gains. The court, however, found that the restriction cited by CBI was included in the original allocation letter but not in the mining lease executed between Odisha govt and Hindalco in 2003.
