Omar Abdullah (File photo) SRINAGAR: J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah slammed Tuesday BJP’s objections to admission of Muslims in Katra’s Vaishno Devi Medical College, saying the party should then have it declared as a minority institution.Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary joined Omar in denouncing BJP’s stance, with the two heavyweights of the governing National Conference (NC) framing its objections as a direct challenge to India’s secular principles and constitutional values.“If you don’t want Muslim students to study in the medical college, then declare it a minority institution. There is one Sikh candidate and several Muslim candidates, let them know it so they can withdraw and seek admission elsewhere. If this continues, our children will go elsewhere. They will go to Bangladesh or Turkey to study,” Omar said.The row erupted after the new college filled seats strictly on NEET’s merit list and reserved 85% of its seats for J&K domiciles, with only eight Hindu students from Jammu making it to the first MBBS batch of 50.After the admissions were completed, VHP and Bajrang Dal were the first to protest, arguing that an institution funded by Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board should give preference to Hindus only.BJP joined them later. On Saturday, BJP’s leader of opposition Sunil Sharma formally lodged a protest with J&K lieutenant-governor (LG) Manoj Sinha, who is ex-officio chairman of the shrine board, submitting a memorandum seeking a review of admission norms.On Tuesday, J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha member Sat Sharma reiterated the position, saying only those who have faith in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi should get admission in the medical college, which comes under Mata Vaishno Devi University.Omar questioned the stance. “When the J&K assembly passed the bill (for the university)…it was clearly stated that admissions will be based on merit. If you want admissions without merit, then seek permission from Supreme Court. As far as I know, our Constitution does not allow religion-based admissions,” the CM said.Omar urged BJP to read the bill under which Mata Vaishno Devi University was established, insisting nowhere does it mention “religion-based admissions”.The CM drew a parallel with Vaishno Devi Hospital, which has been functioning in Katra for several years. “If that logic is applied, then Muslims or non-Hindus should be denied treatment at the hospital? Where will it end? Should we ask people their faith before giving them ration? Should the police decide their duty based on religion?” Omar said.The word “secularism” is still in the Constitution, Omar pointed out. “If you don’t want secularism in this country, remove it from the Constitution. Then you can do what you want, and we will do what we must.”Deputy CM Choudhary asserted that admissions cannot be tied to faith. “These (medical college) students have qualified NEET. Seven states have imposed penalties totaling around Rs 129 crore against contractors and officials for irregularities in the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme, following Prime Minister Modi’s directive for zero tolerance. Representational image NEW DELHI: With reporting irregularities in implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme, seven states have imposed penalties to the tune of around Rs 129 crore, including the maximum Rs 120 crore by Gujarat, against contractors and others, and registered cases against them and certain officials following a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spare no one when it comes to irregularities in the flagship initiative.Modi is learnt to have also instructed the Jal Shakti ministry and the states concerned to initiate action against all such cases of irregularities and directed the strict monitoring of the scheme, with zero tolerance for any financial, procedural and quality-related violations.The govt has recovered around Rs 13 crore in these states so far, with more than Rs 6.6 crore being recovered from Gujarat. The six other states from where penalty recovery has been made are Rajasthan (Rs 5.3 crore), Maharashtra (Rs 2 crore), Tripura (Rs 1.2 crore), Karnataka (Rs 1 crore), Assam (Rs 5 lakh) and Tamil Nadu (Rs 3 lakh).According to the ministry, 20 states/UTs — Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and West Bengal — have reported cases of irregularities and taken action in 607 cases against 621 departmental officials, 969 contractors and 153 Third Party Inspection Agencies (TPIAs).Nine FIRs have been registered against 20 officials, 10 contractors, and 1 TPIA. One former Congress minister in Rajasthan (Mahesh Joshi), 10 officials and eight contractors have been arrested so far.Launched in Aug 2019 to provide functional tap water connections to all (approx.) 19.3 crore rural households in the country, JJM has so far covered more than 15.7 crore households (81% of all). Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill inauguration SHAHABAD, KURUKSHETRA: India’s cooperation sector is set for major expansion as Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has set a national target to establish 150 new sugar mills in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Developed India by 2047, said Haryana Cooperation, Jails, Elections, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma. He said that work has already begun to set up a cooperative sugar mill in Naraingarh, marking the state’s contribution to this national initiative.Addressing the inaugural ceremonies of the 50th crushing season of the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill and the 42nd crushing season of the Shahabad Cooperative Sugar Mill through online mode, Minister Sharma highlighted that Haryana has taken significant steps to support sugarcane farmers. He said chief minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced the highest sugarcane procurement price in the country—Rs 415 per quintal for early varieties and Rs 408 per quintal for late varieties. Sharma said he would soon meet the chief minister along with public representatives to request special incentive schemes for sugarcane farmers.The events were attended by cabinet minister Krishna Kumar Bedi, MP Naveen Jindal, MLA Ramkaran Kala in Shahabad, and Chief Whip and Indri MLA Ramkumar Kashyap, along with Sugar Federation MD Shakti Singh and farmers in Karnal.Sharma emphasised that the cooperative sector will play a crucial role in fulfilling the nation’s development goals. He noted that the Haryana government has ensured timely payment to farmers and introduced an online token system, which has helped farmers save 10–12 hours in transporting cane to the mills.Thanks to last year’s efforts to reconnect former cane growers with the mills, Karnal Mill is expected to crush 3.9 lakh quintals more cane, while Shahabad Mill will receive an additional 2 lakh quintals this season. Both mills continue to win national awards and are progressing with the collective hard work of farmers and staff.Sharma said he would urge the CM to provide subsidised harvesting machinery to ease farmers’ workload and launch new incentive schemes to encourage continuous cane cultivation. He directed mill managements to prioritise farmers’ welfare, “win their hearts,” and ensure they face no difficulties.Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Dr Sharma said that both the Centre and the Haryana government are dedicated to strengthening farmers’ interests. CISF NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Tuesday honoured 19 of its personnel for having displayed “exemplary courage and composure” in the face of heavy shelling and firing from Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, to keep critical national assets along the Indo-Pakistan border as well as residents of the surrounding townships, from harm.CISF director general Praveer Ranjan conferred the coveted ‘DG’s Disc’ on the 19 CISF personnel in recognition of “their pivotal role in safeguarding the Uri hydro-electric power projects (UHEB I and II) in Jammu & Kashmir during a critical phase of cross-border hostilities in May 2025”. The Uri hydropower installation, located barely 8-10 kms from the line of control (LoC), is protected by CISF, putting its personnel at the forefront of sudden escalation of hostilities with the neighbour.’Objective Is To Destroy The Enemy’: Op Sindoor Echoes As Indian Army Vows Stronger Response to PakOperation Sindoor was launched by the armed forces during the intervening night of May 6-7 this year, to demolish terrorist bases in Pakistan in the wake of killing of 26 civilians by terrorists in Pahalgam. The Pakistan Army hit back with indiscriminate shelling on Indian military facilities and civilian settlements along the border, endangering vital infrastructure including the Uri hydro-power projects.“Despite heavy enemy fire and severe risk to their own lives, CISF teams led by Commandant Ravi Yadav and supported by deputy commandant Manohar Singh and assistant commandant Subash Kumar, swiftly initiated protective measures to shield the installations and the surrounding townships. They carried out real-time analysis of incoming shell trajectories, identified safe zones and organised the relocation of residents to bunker shelters,” CISF said in a statement.CISF personnel undertook door-to-door evacuation of around 250 civilians — including women, children, NHPC staff and their families — in the shelling-hit areas. India’s Left faces an introspective period marked by declining vote shares and ideological confusion, evident in West Bengal and Tripura. While Kerala remains a stronghold, it too faces challenges, prompting questions about the party’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself amidst shifting political landscapes and strategic alliances. The Left in India is confronting one of its most introspective moments in decades. From West Bengal, where the CPM once ran the world’s longest-elected communist government, to Tripura, where a 25-year rule ended abruptly in 2018, the party is grappling with a pattern of shrinking vote shares, organisational drift and confused political messaging. Even Kerala, its last remaining stronghold, is showing signs of strain ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.Kerala now carries the burden of being the Left’s last functioning model. But even there, anti-incumbency pressures, the BJP’s new inroads, and debates around the CPM’s outreach to caste-community organisations and its partnership with big private capital, such as the Vizhinjam port, have raised questions about direction and durability. Mamata Banerjee Warns BJP With Nation-Shaking Threat As SIR Battle Erupts In Bengal Ahead Of PollsTo understand whether the communists can reinvent themselves, it’s necessary to trace how they lost ground elsewhere, starting with West Bengal, where the unraveling first became unmistakable.West Bengal: CPM loses ground after 3-decade ruleThe CPIM today occupies only a fraction of the political space it once dominated in West Bengal, a state it governed from 1977 to 2011. Its diminished presence became unmistakable during the 2016 Assembly elections, when the party won just 26 seats—down from 40 in 2011—despite contesting in alliance with the Congress. Even its veteran leader Surjya Kant Mishra lost the Narayangarh seat, which he had held since 1991, underscoring the extent of its organisational decline.A key factor behind this fall was the erosion of trust among the rural population that had powered the Left Front for decades. The party’s early achievements in land reforms, such as Operation Barga, had once strengthened its support base. But later conflicts, notably the police firing in Nandigram in 2007, in which 14 villagers were killed during protests against land acquisition for a chemical hub, reversed much of that goodwill. Similarly, the Singur land acquisition dispute in 2006–08, where many farmers protested the takeover of farmland for the Tata Nano project, created a perception that the party no longer prioritised agrarian interests, and the TMC capitalised on it.Speaking to TOI, when asked if TMC had an edge over CPM when it came to the regional connect, CPM leader Brinda Karat invoked Jyoti Basu’s politics saying, “As far as regional connect is concerned it was the Left led by then chief minister Jyoti Basu who raised the issue of central discrimination against Bengal.”The CPM also struggled with an internal crisis of ideological clarity. While critics had long claimed the Left was too rigid, Bengal’s voters reacted negatively when the party appeared to dilute its ideology. The most prominent example was the 2016 Congress–CPM alliance, which confused sections of its traditional cadre and supporters, who had seen the Congress as the CPM’s principal opponent for decades. The results reflected this discomfort: the CPM’s vote share collapsed to 19.7%, while the Congress increased its seat tally from 42 to 44.Why Left lost Bengal but not Kerala?A comparison with Kerala highlighted the consequences of these strategic choices. In the same year that the CPM slipped further in Bengal, the party’s Kerala unit refused to ally with the Congress or BJP and maintained a clear ideological line. The result was a decisive victory: the Left Democratic Front won 85 seats, up from 64 in 2011. The contrast suggested that voters respond better when the Left presents a consistent political identity. In West Bengal, the CPM’s decline was driven not only by organisational fatigue but also by policy choices and alliances that contradicted its own political foundations. The minority shift”Muslims have been an organic part of the communist party in Bengal including among the founders of the party,” CPM leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat told TOI.In the years when the Left cemented its dominance in Bengal, its leadership ranks were still largely occupied by upper-caste Hindu leaders, the Banerjees, Moitras and Chowdhurys, even in Muslim-majority regions like Malda and Murshidabad. Muslim leaders like Hashim Abdul Halim, Mostafa Bin Kasem and Abdur Rezzak Mollah did establish themselves. But the Left fielded its highest Muslim candidates only in 2011, which is 57.When asked the contrast between inclusion of caste groups in Kerala and Bengal CPM, Karat said: “Bengal was the most caste ridden society. Communists fought the caste system and succeeded in eliminating the worst untouchability practices that exist in north India . SCs were the forefront right holders under the Left regime. How do you think despite every single barrier the left govt was re-elected six times.”End of CPM’s 25-year rule in TripuraThe CPM’s defeat in Tripura in 2018 ended a 25-year run for the Left in one of its strongest bastions and triggered an immediate internal debate on the party’s political direction. The scale of the loss was striking: the BJP, which had less than a 2% vote share in the state earlier, swept to power, while the Left Front collapsed despite securing 46% of the vote. The setback raised questions about the party’s strategy and its ability to read shifting political currents on the ground.The Left in Tripura lost mainly because the BJP built a strong anti-Left wave, captured anti-incumbency sentiment, and successfully mobilised tribal and Congress voters, eroding the Left’s social base and seat share despite a still-high vote share.The Left had relied heavily on tribal support, but the BJP’s alliance with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) helped it make major inroads among tribal voters, weakening the Left in its strongholds.CPM vs CPMA major point of contention inside the CPM has been whether the party should build broader alliances to counter the BJP. Leaders aligned with the then general secretary Sitaram Yechury argued that the Left failed to unite anti-BJP votes in Tripura, pointing out that the Congress still had a residual voter base that could have been consolidated. They cited the example of the Congress vote dropping sharply—from 36% to just 2%—much of which shifted to the BJP, suggesting that the absence of a joint front allowed the BJP to make direct gains.The opposing camp, led by former general secretary Prakash Karat, rejected this assessment. They argued that the BJP’s rise was driven mainly by the defection of Congress leaders to the BJP, rather than a failure of alliance-building. Leaders like Brinda Karat noted that the Left remained the largest single vote-getter with 46% and maintained that the Congress had ceased to be a meaningful anti-BJP force. For this faction, the loss reflected anti-incumbency and organisational erosion rather than a strategic error in refusing an understanding with the Congress.Beyond the internal dispute, Left leaders and allies acknowledged a deeper issue: a growing disconnect between the CPM and ground realities in Tripura. The CPI’s D Raja pointed to the party’s inability to “adapt to changing times,” noting that the rise of the BJP-RSS combine required a more flexible strategy. Several insiders admitted privately that while the Left continued to debate alliances at the national level, it failed to recognise the scale of political shifts unfolding in its own stronghold.All eyes on KeralaThe CPI(M) goes into the 2026 Kerala Assembly election with several big vulnerabilities. Strong anti-incumbency and governance fatigue have weighed heavily on the Left. After ten years in power, every price rise, job shortage, service gap or corruption allegation is now attributed directly to the ruling government, erasing the benefit of earlier goodwill. The pattern was already visible in recent Lok Sabha elections, where the Left performed poorly even as the Congress gained ground and the BJP made significant inroads into what was once a largely one-party landscape.In both 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls it won very few of Kerala’s 20 seats while the Congress‑led UDF dominated and the BJP opened its account, showing that the Left’s appeal in Parliament elections is weakening even where it still rules the state.In state politics, the CPI(M)-led LDF won the 2021 Assembly election convincingly and achieved a rare second consecutive term, keeping firm control of the Kerala government.Left’s pro moves in KeralaRecently critics argued a deliberate effort by CPI(M) to build closer ties with influential Hindu organisations like the Nair Service Society (NSS), SNDP Yogam (Ezhava organisation), and Dalit outfits such as KPMS, often framed as “social engineering” to strengthen support among Hindu castesMoreover, the Vizhinjam port has become a symbol of the Left’s claim to be a “development‑first” force that can deliver big infrastructure while still calling itself socialist. But even there, anti-incumbency pressures, the BJP’s new inroads, and debates around the CPM’s outreach to caste-community organisations and its partnership with big private capital, such as the Vizhinjam port, have raised questions about direction and durability. Mamata Banerjee Warns BJP With Nation-Shaking Threat As SIR Battle Erupts In Bengal Ahead Of PollsTo understand whether the communists can reinvent themselves, it’s necessary to trace how they lost ground elsewhere, starting with West Bengal, where the unraveling first became unmistakable.West Bengal: CPM loses ground after 3-decade ruleThe CPIM today occupies only a fraction of the political space it once dominated in West Bengal, a state it governed from 1977 to 2011. Its diminished presence became unmistakable during the 2016 Assembly elections, when the party won just 26 seats—down from 40 in 2011—despite contesting in alliance with the Congress. Even its veteran leader Surjya Kant Mishra lost the Narayangarh seat, which he had held since 1991, underscoring the extent of its organisational decline.A key factor behind this fall was the erosion of trust among the rural population that had powered the Left Front for decades. The party’s early achievements in land reforms, such as Operation Barga, had once strengthened its support base. But later conflicts, notably the police firing in Nandigram in 2007, in which 14 villagers were killed during protests against land acquisition for a chemical hub, reversed much of that goodwill. Similarly, the Singur land acquisition dispute in 2006–08, where many farmers protested the takeover of farmland for the Tata Nano project, created a perception that the party no longer prioritised agrarian interests, and the TMC capitalised on it.Speaking to TOI, when asked if TMC had an edge over CPM when it came to the regional connect, CPM leader Brinda Karat invoked Jyoti Basu’s politics saying, “As far as regional connect is concerned it was the Left led by then chief minister Jyoti Basu who raised the issue of central discrimination against Bengal.”The CPM also struggled with an internal crisis of ideological clarity. While critics had long claimed the Left was too rigid, Bengal’s voters reacted negatively when the party appeared to dilute its ideology. The most prominent example was the 2016 Congress–CPM alliance, which confused sections of its traditional cadre and supporters, who had seen the Congress as the CPM’s principal opponent for decades. The results reflected this discomfort: the CPM’s vote share collapsed to 19.7%, while the Congress increased its seat tally from 42 to 44.Why Left lost Bengal but not Kerala?A comparison with Kerala highlighted the consequences of these strategic choices. In the same year that the CPM slipped further in Bengal, the party’s Kerala unit refused to ally with the Congress or BJP and maintained a clear ideological line. The result was a decisive victory: the Left Democratic Front won 85 seats, up from 64 in 2011. The contrast suggested that voters respond better when the Left presents a consistent political identity. In West Bengal, the CPM’s decline was driven not only by organisational fatigue but also by policy choices and alliances that contradicted its own political foundations. The minority shift”Muslims have been an organic part of the communist party in Bengal including among the founders of the party,” CPM leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat told TOI.In the years when the Left cemented its dominance in Bengal, its leadership ranks were still largely occupied by upper-caste Hindu leaders, the Banerjees, Moitras and Chowdhurys, even in Muslim-majority regions like Malda and Murshidabad. Muslim leaders like Hashim Abdul Halim, Mostafa Bin Kasem and Abdur Rezzak Mollah did establish themselves. But the Left fielded its highest Muslim candidates only in 2011, which is 57.When asked the contrast between inclusion of caste groups in Kerala and Bengal CPM, Karat said: “Bengal was the most caste ridden society. Communists fought the caste system and succeeded in eliminating the worst untouchability practices that exist in north India . SCs were the forefront right holders under the Left regime. How do you think despite every single barrier the left govt was re-elected six times.”End of CPM’s 25-year rule in TripuraThe CPM’s defeat in Tripura in 2018 ended a 25-year run for the Left in one of its strongest bastions and triggered an immediate internal debate on the party’s political direction. The scale of the loss was striking: the BJP, which had less than a 2% vote share in the state earlier, swept to power, while the Left Front collapsed despite securing 46% of the vote. The setback raised questions about the party’s strategy and its ability to read shifting political currents on the ground.The Left in Tripura lost mainly because the BJP built a strong anti-Left wave, captured anti-incumbency sentiment, and successfully mobilised tribal and Congress voters, eroding the Left’s social base and seat share despite a still-high vote share.The Left had relied heavily on tribal support, but the BJP’s alliance with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) helped it make major inroads among tribal voters, weakening the Left in its strongholds.CPM vs CPMA major point of contention inside the CPM has been whether the party should build broader alliances to counter the BJP. Leaders aligned with the then general secretary Sitaram Yechury argued that the Left failed to unite anti-BJP votes in Tripura, pointing out that the Congress still had a residual voter base that could have been consolidated. They cited the example of the Congress vote dropping sharply—from 36% to just 2%—much of which shifted to the BJP, suggesting that the absence of a joint front allowed the BJP to make direct gains.The opposing camp, led by former general secretary Prakash Karat, rejected this assessment. They argued that the BJP’s rise was driven mainly by the defection of Congress leaders to the BJP, rather than a failure of alliance-building. Leaders like Brinda Karat noted that the Left remained the largest single vote-getter with 46% and maintained that the Congress had ceased to be a meaningful anti-BJP force. She later wrote on social media that she was held for around 18 hours, until officials at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened.Responding to PTI’s query on the incident, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the woman was not subjected to any coercive action.“During the entire time, China’s border inspection authorities carried out checks procedures in accordance with laws and regulations… no compulsory measures were taken on her, and there was no so-called ‘detaining’ or ‘harassing’,” Mao said, adding that the airline had provided “resting facilities and meals.”Mao also said Beijing’s position on the state, saying, “Zangnan is China’s territory, and China does not recognise the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”Citing sources agencies said, a demarche was issued to China in New Delhi and Beijing on the day of the incident, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is an “indisputable” part of India and residents are entitled to travel on Indian passports. NEW DELHI: Twenty-eight Naxalites, including 19 women and 22 cadres carrying a cumulative reward of Rs 89 lakh, surrendered before senior police officers in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district on Tuesday, officials said. According to inspector general of police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj Pattilingam, the group cited their decision was driven by the state government’s ‘Niyad Nellanar’ (your good village) development initiative, the new surrender-and-rehabilitation policy, and the Bastar police’s “Poona Margham (rehabilitation for social reintegration)” programme.Of those who surrendered, four senior operatives – Pandi Dhruv alias Dinesh (33), a divisional committee member, and Dule Mandavi alias Munni (26), Chhattis Poyam (18) and Padni Oyam (30), all from Military Company No. 6 of the Maoists’ East Bastar division – each carried an Rs 8 lakh reward. Six others, including Lakhmu Usendi (20), Sukmati Nureti (25), Sakila Kashyap (35), Shambatti Shori (35), Chaite alias Rajita (30) and Budhra Rava (28), had bounties of Rs 5 lakh each. According to inspector general of police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj Pattilingam, the group cited their decision was driven by the state government’s ‘Niyad Nellanar’ (your good village) development initiative, the new surrender-and-rehabilitation policy, and the Bastar police’s “Poona Margham (rehabilitation for social reintegration)” programme.Of those who surrendered, four senior operatives – Pandi Dhruv alias Dinesh (33), a divisional committee member, and Dule Mandavi alias Munni (26), Chhattis Poyam (18) and Padni Oyam (30), all from Military Company No. 6 of the Maoists’ East Bastar division – each carried an Rs 8 lakh reward. Six others, including Lakhmu Usendi (20), Sukmati Nureti (25), Sakila Kashyap (35), Shambatti Shori (35), Chaite alias Rajita (30) and Budhra Rava (28), had bounties of Rs 5 lakh each. Police said that Dinesh, Lakhmu and Sukmati surrendered weapons – a Self Loading Rifle (SLR), an INSAS rifle and a .303 rifle. Experts explain how we need to stay ahead of the curve on detection, and why govt should implement effective laws When a finance executive at a British engineering firm, Arup, joined a routine Skype meeting in Jan 2024, familiar faces filled the screen. The company leaders he had interacted with countless times spoke with authority, blinked naturally, and smiled reassuringly. Except the people on screen were not real, and the AI-crafted doubles duped the firm, which worked on the Statue of Unity and India’s rail projects, of nearly million. The deepfakes were so flawless that 15 transfers from the Hong Kong office went through before anyone realised the con.Months later, a deepfake surfaced closer to home. Experts warn that ‘DeepNude’ or AI-generated explicit content created without consent pose grave risks to women’s privacy.Tangles in law and deterrenceWith no dedicated deepfake law, several Bollywood actors are taking legal recourse. Delhi HC has issued ‘John Doe’ orders that allow legal action against anonymous offenders. It introduced ‘dynamic+ injunctions’, which compel platforms to remove the original deepfake as well as proactively monitor and take down re-uploads.Protecting the futureSharma identified the “most dangerous” use of deepfakes in the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector. He says that during online know your customer (KYC) processes,“I can clone a voice or face, and the system may verify that person as genuine”.To tackle this, the “first mandate” of the upcoming deepfake policy will require “BFSI to use deepfake detectors for KYC and document verification,” Sharma reveals. Shivakumar, who also heads the Karnataka Congress, explained that he does not want to cause any “embarrassment” to the grand old party. “I don’t know. I have not asked to be made CM. It is a secret deal between five and six of us. I don’t want to speak publicly on this. I believe in my conscience. We should work with our conscience. I don’t want to embarrass the party or weaken it. If the party is there, we are there. If ‘karyakartas’ are there, we are there,” he told reporters, according to PTI. NEW DELHI: The serious issue of pilot fatigue is finally being addressed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Airline schedulers and dispatch staff — responsible for drawing up pilot rosters — will now have to be trained in fatigue management to ensure schedules that do allow only well rested pilots to operate flights. Pilots of big Indian carriers have long been complaining about inhumane rosters that has been leading to stress, thereby affecting flight safety.In a significant move, DGCA chief Faiz Ahmed Kidwai has mandated airlines must have a “fatigue risk management policy; fatigue reporting system and a system for monitoring flight crew fatigue.” Fatigue training will now have to be a regular feature in the “annual ground training” (AGTR) of operators to ensure that all rules related to crew flight time duty limitation are followed both in letter and in spirit.”The fatigue training should be conducted by trained staff and include its effect on flight crew and measures to mitigate crew fatigue,” the DGCA says. The training syllabus will have to contain the following:a) Applicable regulatory requirements for flight, duty and rest.b) The basics of fatigue including sleep fundamentals and the effects of disturbing the circadian rhythms.c) The causes of fatigue, including medical conditions that may lead to fatigue.d) The effect of fatigue on performance.e) Fatigue countermeasures.f) The influence of lifestyle, including nutrition, exercise, and family life, on fatigue.g) Familiarity with sleep disorders and their possible treatmentsmh) Where applicable, the effects of long range operations and heavy short range schedules on individuals.i) The effect of operating through and within multiple time zones. j) The crew member responsibility for ensuring adequate rest and fitness for flight duty.”The operator shall issue fatigue reporting policy as a circular to all stake holders. Further, operator should constitute an independent Fatigue Review Committee which will analyse and recommend measures to mitigate fatigue,” the DGCA has ordered.Quarterly fatigue reports will need to be submitted to DGCA that will have details like number of crew trained, fatigue reports received and accepted or rejected (with reasons). The fatigue off should be atleast 24 hour period and include one local night. Mann, Kejriwal join congregation to pray for Punjab’s progress Anandpur Sahib, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday joined the large congregation here to pray for the progress of the state and prosperity of Punjabis. Both the leaders took part in the ‘ardas’ (prayer) performed after the ‘bhog’ of ‘Sri Akhand Path sahib’ to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur and legendary Sikh martyrs Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dayala at Gurdwara Baba Budha Dal Chauni, according to an official statement. They joined the large congregation to express gratitude to the Guru and pray for the welfare of all. Both leaders said that it was a matter of great honour for them to have the opportunity to serve during the events to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru. On the occasion, Mann and Kejriwal said Sikhism propagated the true model of socialism and secularism in the world. They said Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a lighthouse of universal brotherhood, secularism and socialism for every human being. सुप्रीम कोर्ट NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asserted that it is not inclined to either frame laws or monitor “every instance of hate speech,” noting that legislative mechanisms, police authorities, and high courts already exist to deal with such matters.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made these remarks while hearing an application alleging calls for the “social and economic boycott” of a particular community, PTI reported.“We are not legislating in the garb of this petition,” the bench said. “We are not inclined to monitor every small incident that takes place in various pockets of the country. High courts, police stations and legislative measures are already in place.”The judges questioned how the top court could be expected to oversee such incidents nationwide and advised the petitioner’s counsel to first approach local authorities, and if no action is taken, move the appropriate high court.The petitioner’s lawyer replied that the application was filed in a pending writ petition on hate speech and was meant to bring “additional recent instances” to attention. While the bench noted that some of these calls were made by individuals, the lawyer pointed out that certain public representatives were also involved.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, remarked that public interest cannot be “selective” or “limited to a particular religion.” “Severe hate speech occurs across all religions. I will share those details with my friend so that the cause can be taken up on a pan-religion basis,” he stated.The petitioner’s counsel alleged that authorities were “failing to act,” despite earlier Supreme Court directions requiring police to take suo motu action on hate speech. He urged the SG to “remind” states of these obligations.SG Mehta reiterated his stance: “No one can indulge in hate speech. But a public-spirited person cannot be selective while complaining.”The bench maintained that existing legal remedies must be exhausted, adding, “Whichever state you have a problem with, approach the jurisdictional high court for appropriate relief.” It added that high courts are fully capable of addressing such issues when public interest is involved.The petitioner also cited the Supreme Court’s October 2022 order directing three states to take strict action against hate speech. सुप्रीम कोर्ट NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asserted that it is not inclined to either frame laws or monitor “every instance of hate speech,” noting that legislative mechanisms, police authorities, and high courts already exist to deal with such matters.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made these remarks while hearing an application alleging calls for the “social and economic boycott” of a particular community, PTI reported.“We are not legislating in the garb of this petition,” the bench said. “We are not inclined to monitor every small incident that takes place in various pockets of the country. High courts, police stations and legislative measures are already in place.”The judges questioned how the top court could be expected to oversee such incidents nationwide and advised the petitioner’s counsel to first approach local authorities, and if no action is taken, move the appropriate high court.The petitioner’s lawyer replied that the application was filed in a pending writ petition on hate speech and was meant to bring “additional recent instances” to attention. While the bench noted that some of these calls were made by individuals, the lawyer pointed out that certain public representatives were also involved.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, remarked that public interest cannot be “selective” or “limited to a particular religion.” “Severe hate speech occurs across all religions. I will share those details with my friend so that the cause can be taken up on a pan-religion basis,” he stated.The petitioner’s counsel alleged that authorities were “failing to act,” despite earlier Supreme Court directions requiring police to take suo motu action on hate speech. He urged the SG to “remind” states of these obligations.SG Mehta reiterated his stance: “No one can indulge in hate speech. But a public-spirited person cannot be selective while complaining.”The bench maintained that existing legal remedies must be exhausted, adding, “Whichever state you have a problem with, approach the jurisdictional high court for appropriate relief.” It added that high courts are fully capable of addressing such issues when public interest is involved.The petitioner also cited the Supreme Court’s October 2022 order directing three states to take strict action against hate speech. NEW DELHI: Senior IAS officer Santosh Verma, state president of the Anusuchit Jati-Janjati Adhikari Karmachari Sangh (AJJAKS) in Madhya Pradesh, has drawn sharp criticism after a video of a remark he made at an event in Bhopal went viral, prompting demands for a police case and disciplinary action. Speaking on whether reservation should be granted on economic basis he said, “until a Brahmin donates his daughter to my son or has a relationship with him, reservations should continue.”The All India Brahmin Society condemned Verma’s statement, its state president Pushpendra Mishra termed the comment “indecent” and “casteist,” alleging that it insults Brahmin daughters and violates All India Services Conduct Rules.In a post on X Mishra said “An FIR should be lodged immediately for comments made against Brahmin daughters. The IAS officer’s remarks are indecent, objectionable, and an insult to the Brahmin community. If a criminal case is not filed soon, the Brahmin Samaj will launch a statewide protest.” He added that the comments were inappropriate at a time when schemes such as Ladli Laxmi, Ladli Behna, and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao focus on the dignity and welfare of girls. He warned that it would pursue both legal and street-level agitation if the government fails to act. “The government should immediately take the strictest possible action against IAS officer Santosh Verma, otherwise the Brahmin society will fight against IAS officer Santosh Verma in court as well as on the road,” Mishra said. Amid the escalating controversy, Verma issued a clarification, stating that his comments were taken out of context during a discussion on whether reservation should be linked to economic criteria. He told ANI, “my aim was not to create a political uproar… I had said that if I am financially independent and not socially backward anymore, then my children should receive ‘roti-beti’ treatment from society. I don’t have ill will against any community. I did not want to hurt women’s sentiments. I express regret if I have hurt anyone. NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she “loves Bangladesh as a country, because their language is same,” before training guns at the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, warning that the exercise must not be rushed ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.Addressing an anti-SIR rally in Bongaon, the chief minister told the crowd, “If your name gets deleted, the central government should also be deleted.” Referring to claims that the aim of the SIR is to remove Bangladeshi nationals from the voter list, she asked why the exercise was being conducted in several BJP-ruled states as well and questioned the purpose behind the revision.”I love Bangladesh as a country, because our language is the same. I am from Birbhum, but one day they will call me Bangladeshi. PM Modi got votes in 2024 as per the same list. If your name gets deleted, the central government should also be deleted. Why conducting SIR in such a hurry?” she said.”Till I am here, I will not allow them to throw you out. Nobody can throw you out. If Bangladeshi is a problem, then why are you conducting SIR in Madhya Pradesh and UP?” she asked.She asserted that she has no fear of the ruling party, declaring, “BJP cannot fight and defeat me politically,” and accused the Centre of using the SIR exercise to target voters.Further indicating conditional support for the revision, Banerjee said, “If SIR is conducted over two-three years, we will support the exercise with every possible resource.” The chief minister accused the Election Commission of losing its neutrality, stating that the “EC is no longer an impartial body, it has turned into a ‘BJP Commission’.” She claimed that people would realise the “disaster” caused by the EC and BJP once the draft voter list is published after the SIR. “Does conducting SIR in BJP-ruled states imply the Centre accepts ‘ghuspaithiyas’ exist there?” she asked.These remarks come as the Election Commission has begun the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and Union Territories. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 7, 2026. The top court said his conduct amounted to “gross indiscipline.”A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi went on to describe him as an “absolute misfit” for the Army.The soldier had been removed from service earlier because he did not follow the order to enter the temple and gurdwara with his unit. He challenged this decision in the Delhi high court, but the high court upheld his termination. He then approached the Supreme Court.The Delhi high court had earlier said that the soldier placed his personal religious beliefs above the lawful command of his superiors. The soldier’s lawyer, Senior Advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan, argued that his client simply refused to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and gurdwara because his Christian faith does not allow him to participate in such religious rituals. He also said the soldier had a clean service record for six years and only avoided activities that went against his conscience.However, the Supreme Court was not convinced. The judges said the Army carries a huge responsibility, and discipline must be maintained. They noted that by refusing to join the religious activities of his regiment, the soldier insulted the troops he was leading.
