NEW DELHI: The Bareilly Cantonment has emerged as India’s first carbon-negative cantonment, four years ahead of the 2030 target set by defence minister Rajnath Singh during Manthan-2025.The Cantonment Board Bareilly had undertaken a series of transformative initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen environmental sustainability to achieve Rajnath Singh’s vision of carbon neutrality for the cantonment.These initiatives included installation of rooftop solar power systems, adoption of energy-efficient infrastructure, LED lighting, extensive plantation drives, conservation and expansion of green cover, promotion of renewable energy, and the initiation of wind energy projects to further augment clean energy generation.TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) conducted a comprehensive scientific study titled “Carbon Sequestration Study of Plantation in Bareilly Cantonment Area” to assess the plantation-based carbon sequestration potential of the cantonment and evaluated its net carbon balance. It concluded that the net annual carbon balance of Bareilly Cantonment is approximately (-) 60,386 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, demonstrating that the cantonment absorbs substantially more carbon than it emits.Based on these scientific findings, TERI has declared Bareilly Cantonment as “carbon negative” and observed that the environmental management practices adopted in the cantonment can serve as a replicable model for other cantonments and urban local bodies across India.Speaking on the occasion, Tanu Jain, IDES, Chief Executive Officer, Cantonment Board Bareilly, stated that this recognition is the result of the collective efforts of the board, defence authorities, residents, and all stakeholders committed to building a greener and more sustainable future.Get the latest India news and live updates. The party has been demanding accountability over alleged exam paper leaks and irregularities, particularly in national-level examinations.In his letter, Dipke questioned why the Centre had not responded despite Wangchuk’s worsening health.”We have been sitting in protest at Jantar Mantar for the past 15 days, and today marks the 7th day of educationist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike. How long will your government choose to ignore our voices, sir?” he wrote.Dipke said a hunger strike in a democratic society is meant to create moral pressure on those in power.”The underlying principle is simple: when someone like Sonam Wangchuk, a man who has dedicated his entire life, mind, and soul to this country and to the cause of education, refuses to consume food, it is supposed to elicit a conscious response, whether moral or political, from the government of the day. Yet, you have not spoken a single word,” he said.Explaining the reasons behind the protest, Dipke said it was driven by repeated exam paper leaks, alleged government inaction and the deaths of students.”We are sitting here because your government has repeatedly failed to stop exam paper leaks that have shattered the faith and future of crores of young Indians. We are sitting here because your Education Minister refuses to accept moral responsibility and resign from a post he has occupied for close to five years,” the letter said.He also alleged that the government had failed to provide justice to families of students who died by suicide.”This protest is not just a political exercise but also a desperate cry to save the lives of our youth. Before we sat for the protest on June 20, 11 students had committed suicide due to the compounding trauma of the paper leaks and exam cancellations. Today, as you continue to look away, that devastating count has crossed 29 students. Every single day your government chooses silence, the body count of India’s future rises,” Dipke wrote.The CJP founder further criticised remarks allegedly made by senior leaders against the protesters.”Instead of an empathetic dialogue, your minister Dharmendra Pradhan has labeled us terrorists, and your party president has called us names, threatening that the youth of India will be ‘taught a lesson’ for daring to raise our voices against this broken, corrupt system and these preventable deaths,” he said.Questioning the Prime Minister’s silence, Dipke wrote, “Your resounding silence makes us ask—do you truly believe we are just ‘cockroaches’? If you, as the Prime Minister, refuse to respond to the Cockroach Janta Party’s peaceful hunger strike, your silence stands as a tacit admission that you view the youth of this country as nothing more than pests to be ignored.”The letter also accused the Delhi Police of using force against peaceful protesters and disrespecting books kept at the protest site.”Under the direct orders of ACP Ajay Sharma and Inspector Neeraj Sahu, police personnel threw books onto the muddy roads—specifically targeting literature on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” Dipke alleged.He demanded the immediate suspension of the two police officers.”We ask you, Prime Minister ji: if students protesting for a better, fairer education system cannot even keep a small library at their protest site for others to read, what kind of society are you building? Justice Yashwant Varma NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday said the probe committee’s report on Justice Yashwant Varma will be tabled in the Lok Sabha during the upcoming Monsoon Session as it was sought by MPs cutting across party lines .”The report will be tabled during the Monsoon Session. The future course of action will be decided later,” Birla told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Kolkata.His remarks came on a day when Union minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin on July 20 and conclude on August 13.Facing impeachment proceedings over the recovery of a large quantity of burnt currency notes from his official residence, Justice Verma resigned on April 9. However, President Droupadi Murmu is yet to accept his resignation.The recovery was made in March 2025 while Verma was serving as a judge of the Delhi high court.He initially refused to resign and was subsequently repatriated to the Allahabad high court.On August 12 last year, Birla constituted the probe committee after receiving a proposal from 146 Lok Sabha MPs on July 21 seeking Verma’s removal.After referring to relevant laws and judgements of the Supreme Court, the Delhi high court chief justice found the charges against Justice Varma were of a serious nature and followed it up with the “in-house procedure”.Earlier, then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had initiated an in-house probe into the allegations and set up a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry against Justice Verma.The committee comprising Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Karnataka High Court Justice Anu Sivaraman submitted its report on May 4, 2025.After receiving the report, then-CJI asked Justice Varma to resign or face impeachment proceedings.However, as Justice Verma had initially declined to resign, both the in-house probe committee’s report and his response were forwarded to the President and the prime minister for initiating the process for his removal.The Supreme Court had also dismissed Justice Varma’s plea against the-then CJI’s recommendation for his removal.(With PTI inputs)Get the latest India news and live updates. The row over a controversial book in Jammu and Kashmir’s government school libraries escalated on Saturday after Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha suspended eight School Education Department officials, removed a contractual employee, and ordered a departmental inquiry into the selection and procurement of two library books found to contain “inappropriate content”.The LG also blacklisted the books’ authors and publishers and directed the withdrawal of their publications from across the Union Territory, following a political storm over allegations that one of the books glorified terrorists, separatists and stone-pelters.The action came amid BJP allegations that the book promoted ‘academic jihad’, with the party demanding an immediate ban on the publication and the removal of Education Minister Sakeena Itoo. The Congress has also sought a ban on the controversial book and Itoo’s dismissal.According to PTI, addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma alleged that Personalities and Legends of J&K, distributed under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, was intended to “poison young minds” and revive separatism by using the education system to propagate a Pakistan-sponsored narrative.Sharma claimed the book portrays individuals such as hanged JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat, Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed and separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Shabir Shah, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Masarat Alam Bhat in a positive light. He also objected to references describing the region as “Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK)” and “India-held Kashmir.””The book distributed by the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir across numerous libraries in the Union Territory glorifies convicts, murderers, terrorists, separatists, and stone-pelters,” Sharma said.”It is deeply regrettable that the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department has distributed this book to schools under the logo of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. This is a grave offence,” he added.The BJP leader accused the ruling National Conference of providing political patronage to a separatist narrative and sought immediate action against those responsible.He also demanded the removal of the Education Minister and a high-level investigation into the matter.”Those responsible — including the author, the publisher, and the committee of experts that approved the book– should face criminal proceedings. A case should be registered against them, treating it as a seditious offence, and they should be arrested immediately and proceeded against in accordance with the law,” Sharma said.He further alleged that the publication lacked educational value and had been designed to spread “a poisonous narrative driven by a separatist ideology and a jihadist mindset”.Referring to previous BJP campaigns against similar publications, Sharma said the party had earlier facilitated the banning of 25 books allegedly containing material against India’s sovereignty and urged the government and investigating agencies to take immediate action against the current publication.Get the latest India news and live updates. The Congress has also sought a ban on the controversial book and Itoo’s dismissal.According to PTI, addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma alleged that Personalities and Legends of J&K, distributed under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, was intended to “poison young minds” and revive separatism by using the education system to propagate a Pakistan-sponsored narrative.Sharma claimed the book portrays individuals such as hanged JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat, Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed and separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Shabir Shah, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Masarat Alam Bhat in a positive light. He also objected to references describing the region as “Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK)” and “India-held Kashmir.””The book distributed by the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir across numerous libraries in the Union Territory glorifies convicts, murderers, terrorists, separatists, and stone-pelters,” Sharma said.”It is deeply regrettable that the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department has distributed this book to schools under the logo of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. This is a grave offence,” he added.The BJP leader accused the ruling National Conference of providing political patronage to a separatist narrative and sought immediate action against those responsible.He also demanded the removal of the Education Minister and a high-level investigation into the matter.”Those responsible — including the author, the publisher, and the committee of experts that approved the book– should face criminal proceedings. A case should be registered against them, treating it as a seditious offence, and they should be arrested immediately and proceeded against in accordance with the law,” Sharma said.He further alleged that the publication lacked educational value and had been designed to spread “a poisonous narrative driven by a separatist ideology and a jihadist mindset”.Referring to previous BJP campaigns against similar publications, Sharma said the party had earlier facilitated the banning of 25 books allegedly containing material against India’s sovereignty and urged the government and investigating agencies to take immediate action against the current publication.Get the latest India news and live updates. TMC MP Saugata Roy NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy on Saturday alleged that the BJP was attempting to take control of the party’s offices across West Bengal, a day after TMC’s rebel faction took possession of the Mamata Banerjee-led party’s office in Kolkata.Reacting to the development, Roy dismissed rebel faction leader Ritabrata Banerjee’s claim that the dissident group is the “real” TMC.”Ritabrata was a CPM man. Why does he keep talking about the party? His words carry no weight,” Roy told ANI. Ritabrata Banerjee joined the Trinamool Congress in 2020 after resigning from the CPM in 2017.Referring to the incident at the TMC’s office, Roy alleged that a group of people had locked the premises and that the police stopped him from removing the lock.”Yesterday, some people came and put a lock on our office. ‘Trust & confidence were no longer there’: Chandrima Bhattacharya on quitting TMC; party calls move ‘pre-planned’ NEW DELHI: Former West Bengal state president Chandrima Bhattacharya on Saturday said that she decided to resign from all posts in the Trinamool Congress after losing the confidence and trust of party chief Mamata Banerjee, while rejecting questions over her loyalty to the party.Speaking to reporters after submitting her resignation, Bhattacharya said, “The confidence that Mamata ji had in me seemed to have weakened. When trust and confidence were no longer there, it became difficult to continue working as a party worker… I respect Kunal Ghosh, but who is he to question my loyalty, and on what basis? Mamata Banerjee knows whether I am loyal or not.”Her remarks came hours after the Mamata Banerjee-led faction accused her resignation of being a ‘pre-planned’ move and alleged that she had aligned herself with the rival faction led by expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee amid the Trinamool Congress’ deepening internal crisis.Mamata Banerjee-led faction suffered another setback, with Bhattacharya stepping down from her position barely a month after she was appointed West Bengal state president following the party’s defeat in the 2026 assembly elections.Speaking to reporters, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “Chandrima Bhattacharya was our didi. When she was in office, they (the rebel faction) came. If she had remained there for some more time as president, locks would not have been put. But she left. When Mamata Banerjee was CM, Chandrima Bhattacharya held the highest number of ministerial portfolios. If she is upset, there could have been communication, but joining the opposition camp suggests that it was pre-planned.””Anyone can make any decision but when Mamata Banerjee was the CM, she (Chandrima Bhattacharya) had the most important ministry (department). Now she is showing arrogance,” he said.Bhattacharya also resigned from all other posts she held in the party. She withdrew as the authorised signatory for the Trinamool Congress and its associated organisations’ bank accounts and gave up her role as Mamata Banerjee’s authorised representative before the Election Commission.Bhattacharya was appointed West Bengal state president on June 3, replacing senior leader Subrata Bakshi during the party’s national working committee meeting at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence.In her resignation letter addressed to the TMC chief, Bhattacharya thanked Mamata for her trust and said she continued to hold her in the highest regard.”At the end I would like to state that I have the highest regards for you and will remain ever respectful to you,” she wrote.Later, Bhattacharya told reporters that her decision was prompted by a phone call from Mamata Banerjee, who allegedly blamed her for allowing the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel faction to take control of Trinamool Bhavan, the party’s operational headquarters in Kolkata.”I was deeply hurt when she (Mamata Banerjee) called me to say that I have handed over the party office to them (the rebels), although I do not know how I did that. It is evident that my loyalty and trustworthiness were shaken from their roots. This had never happened in the past. Once those fundamental binding forces are gone, there is no reason for me to stay in the party or return to it,” Bhattacharya said.Asked whether she planned to formally join the rebel camp, she replied, “There’s more to life than this. I am yet to decide the course I will chart.”However, shortly after speaking to the media, Bhattacharya was seen attending a meeting with leaders of the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction at the West Bengal assembly, where she was welcomed by deputy leader of opposition Sandipan Saha.The development comes after the rebel faction took control of Trinamool Bhavan, held a meeting at the premises and changed the locks, declaring that the office would now function as its organisational headquarters.The organisational battle intensified after the rebel camp approached the Election Commission seeking recognition as the ‘real’ Trinamool Congress and staking claim to the party’s name and election symbol.The split has widened since the TMC’s defeat in the 2026 assembly elections. NEW DLEHI: Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Saturday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over alleged financial irregularities at temple trusts, claiming that revelations of donation theft at Kedarnath and Badrinath have raised serious questions about governance in BJP-ruled states.Speaking to ANI, Ramesh linked the allegations to the BJP’s campaign around the Ram Temple, saying, “Votes were taken in the name of Ram for the Ram Temple, but Ram’s name is being tarnished. Revelations have recently surfaced in Kedarnath and Badrinath, where donations were also stolen.”The Congress leader questioned why such incidents were allegedly taking place in states governed by the BJP and pointed to the composition of temple trusts.”Why is this theft happening in BJP-ruled states? Because BJP and RSS members are on this trust. Didn’t the Prime Minister and Home Minister know about these people?” he said.Ramesh also reiterated his allegations in a post on X, alleging that efforts were being made to shield those responsible.He wrote, “Prayers of the donation theft at Shri Ram Mandir are continuously being uncovered, but efforts to protect the big thieves from BJP-RSS are being made with full force. Crores of rupees in offerings from Shri Ram Mandir have been stolen, but the agencies of the country have been gagged.”The remarks come amid allegations circulating on social media over the alleged misappropriation of donations and offerings at the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple.Responding to the allegations, Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) chairman Hemant Dwivedi said the committee had acted swiftly and initiated an inquiry.In a video statement, Dwivedi said, “Regarding the news and allegations circulating on social media concerning the alleged misappropriation of donations and offerings at the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Dham, I wish to state that the Temple Committee has taken this matter very seriously. Notices–specifically show-cause notices–have already been issued by our Chief Executive Officer to all employees and officials involved in the counting process.”He said an inquiry committee had been constituted and assured that action would follow if wrongdoing was established.”An inquiry committee has also been constituted with immediate effect. This committee will conduct its investigation and submit a report as soon as possible, which will be made public. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, as this is a highly sensitive issue that we are treating with the utmost seriousness, given the deep faith millions of people place in this holy shrine. All necessary actions were initiated within 24 hours,” Dwivedi said.The BKTC chairman also rejected claims on social media regarding the alleged involvement of his personal secretary.”I also wish to clarify a point regarding claims circulating on social media about the ‘Chairman’s personal secretary.’ I want to make it clear that I do not have a personal secretary; all these individuals are Temple Committee employees. The person being referred to as the ‘personal secretary’ is actually a regular employee of the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee,” he said.Earlier this week, the BKTC had issued fresh directives for the handling of donations, offerings and other revenue across temples under its administration. The party claimed that officials responsible for updating voter lists are being prevented from carrying out their work in the prescribed manner and urged the poll body to intervene.A BJP delegation led by state president BY Vijayendra, along with senior MLA and former minister S Suresh Kumar, met the chief electoral officer on Saturday and submitted a formal complaint over the issue.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Vijayendra alleged that the Election Commission had launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls with the right intent, but the state government was attempting to disrupt the exercise.He claimed that instead of allowing Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to perform their duties independently, the government was putting them under pressure.”Today, pressure is being exerted on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and they are being misused,” the Shikaripura MLA alleged.Vijayendra said the SIR exercise requires BLOs to visit households and verify voter details through a door-to-door process.”However, the BLOs are being made to sit in community halls, marriage halls, in some places in mosques, and in some places even in the offices of MLAs. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body that led the year-long farmers’ protest against the Centre’s farm laws, has announced its support for the ongoing student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over alleged examination irregularities. A delegation of the farmers’ body will join the protest on Sunday in a show of solidarity with the students and others taking part in the agitation.In a letter to Cockroach Janta Party president Abhijit Dipke, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) said it stood in “wholehearted solidarity” with the peaceful protest and with the students, young people and their families participating in it.The farmers’ body said its delegation would reach Jantar Mantar at 11 am on Sunday to support the protesting students and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who, along with several students, has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.The SKM also expressed its “deepest sympathies” to students and families affected by what it described as the Modi government’s “chronic paper leaks and examination mismanagement”.”Every student has the right to a transparent, fair and credible system of education and examinations. Ensuring accountability in this regard is the responsibility of the government,” the letter said.The organisation said its National Council had passed a resolution on June 17 backing the student movement, supporting the demand for the Education Minister’s resignation and opposing what it called the “scam culture” in the education sector under the BJP-led NDA government.The SKM also referred to its earlier criticism of the decision to block the CJP’s social media accounts.”The students and the youth are also the children of farmers and the future of India. Samyukta Kisan Morcha firmly believes that the struggles of students and youth are the struggle of farmers,” the letter said, adding that it was the moral responsibility of farmers and democratic organisations to stand with young people fighting for their education, future and justice.The farmers’ body said it hoped its visit to the protest site would strengthen the movement and encourage the government to hold meaningful discussions while taking “necessary actions beginning with the resignation of the Education Minister”.In a separate statement, the SKM appealed to students, youth, farmers, workers and the general public to participate in the protest at Jantar Mantar and support the demand for accountability.The Samyukta Kisan Morcha is an umbrella platform of more than three dozen farmers’ organisations, largely from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Parents encouraged them, schools celebrated them and students chased them, often believing there were few equally respectable alternatives.That equation, however, is quietly changing.The shift is unfolding alongside one of the biggest transformations in the global job market. The scale of engineering education is spread across thousands of institutions nationwide, underscoring its enduring appeal among students.Medical education, too, has expanded significantly over the past decade. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Union Health Ministry, India has more than doubled the number of medical colleges since 2014, leading to a substantial increase in MBBS seats. The expansion has been driven by the establishment of new government and private medical colleges, particularly in underserved regions, to address the country’s doctor-to-population ratio.Competitive examinations tell a similar story. Nearly nine in 10 said they would encourage the next generation to explore career options beyond the traditional professions, with many saying skills, adaptability and personal interests now matter more than simply following conventional career paths. Artificial intelligence, data science and cybersecurity emerged among the careers most frequently identified as offering the strongest opportunities over the next decade.Several respondents also believed future success would depend less on degrees and more on adaptability.For Tripti Kumar, who recently graduated as BSc Home Science student, the decision came from recognising that her interests lay elsewhere. She said she realised engineering and medicine were never the right fit because she was more interested in human development, nutrition, family studies and community well-being. “I wanted a career where I could work closely with people and make a positive impact on their lives,” she said, explaining why she chose Home Science.A psychology student in college also felt encouraged to go beyond. She said she realised in Class 10 that engineering and medicine were not the right path after developing a keen interest in understanding people and their behaviour. Although some relatives felt engineering and medicine were “better career choices”, but she never felt pressured to pursue them. “It was worth it because I am studying what I enjoy,” they added.Unlike many students who face pressure to pursue conventional professions, she said her parents trusted her judgement. Their support gave her the confidence to pursue Home Science “without any hesitation.” Additionally, looking back, she believes the decision has paid off. The course, she said, has strengthened her practical knowledge, communication skills and confidence. “Most importantly, I enjoy what I study, and that makes the journey meaningful and rewarding.”However, the traditional paths have not lost relevance. “Someone has to become doctor and engineer, so it should always be a career option,” said Shivendra Singh, a media professional reflecting a sentiment that these professions remain indispensable even as choices expand.Meanwhile, one respondent working in the media sector said, “even people with degrees in medicine or engineering are pivoting to content creation and slowly making it their primary focus,” citing the rapid growth of the creator economy.Echoing a similar sentiment, Durgesh Kumar Jha, PR professional at Kalka Co. Media Consultancy, said “Engineering and medicine remain respected professions, but today’s youth are embracing diverse fields like communications, digital media, entrepreneurship, design and technology. What matters most is aligning one’s passion and skills with the opportunities of a rapidly changing world.”The changing mindset isn’t unique to India.According to Deloitte’s 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, younger professionals are increasingly defining career success on their own terms rather than through conventional milestones.The report found that financial pressures continue shaping career decisions, while workers are investing heavily in new skills, viewing adaptability as a core career capability. Indians are increasingly moving away from traditionally mainstream and for many the “only choice of engineering & medicine” “My son will become an engineer.””My daughter will be a doctor.”For decades, statements like these defined middle-class ambition in India.From coaching centres to family gatherings, engineering and medicine became shorthand for success; careers that promised stable incomes, social prestige and upward mobility. Parents encouraged them, schools celebrated them and students chased them, often believing there were few equally respectable alternatives.That equation, however, is quietly changing.The shift is unfolding alongside one of the biggest transformations in the global job market. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that by 2030, structural changes in the labour market will create 170 million new jobs, while 92 million existing roles could be displaced. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Union Health Ministry, India has more than doubled the number of medical colleges since 2014, leading to a substantial increase in MBBS seats.
