Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, Razia Sultana, are under probe for their son’s death, which they attribute to drug overdose. Mustafa revealed his son’s 18-year drug addiction and violent episodes, claiming a video alleging foul play was a product of his son’s psychotic disorder and is being misused. NEW DELHI: Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, now at the centre of a murder and conspiracy probe along with his wife, former minister Razia Sultana, has rejected allegations that they were involved in the death of their son.Speaking to reporters in Saharanpur, the retired IPS officer made startling revelations about his late son, Aakil Akhtar, saying, “My son had been a drug addict for 18 years. I used to lock him in the room for two to three days. Got him treated at several places.” Mustafa said the family had been “grieving” since Akhtar’s death but would now “face the allegations like a soldier,” PTI quoted him saying.“On October 16, when we entered the room, he was already dead. He was consuming excessive drugs. We knew allegations would be made, that’s why we got the post-mortem done,” he said. Mustafa added that as a former police chief, he understood the process and welcomed the registration of a case. “An SIT has been formed; everything will become clear,” he said.Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the family under sections of murder and conspiracy. “Former DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former minister Razia Sultana’s son, Aakil Akhtar, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at his residence in MDC, Panchkula. The complainant has expressed suspicions of foul play,” Gupta said. She added that a Special Investigation Team has been set up to ensure a “scientific and transparent probe”.The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint by Shamshuddin, who claimed that Akhtar had posted a video on social media alleging that his family might “frame him in a false case” or have him “killed”. “Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or even killed,” Akhtar said in the purported video, also alleging that his family dismissed his concerns as delusions.Mustafa, however, insisted that his son had been suffering from a long-term psychotic disorder and that the video was being “misused to malign the family”. “He often became violent due to his illness. In 2008, he even broke his mother’s hip, but we said she had fallen. PUNE: Bronze Age traders crossing Gujarat stopped at well-organised roadside facilities that offered shelter, food, security and stables for their pack animals.A new multidisciplinary study by Pune-based Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), New Delhi, published in L’Anthropologie (Elsevier, 2025), has identified a 4,000-year-old Harappan settlement at Kotada Bhadli in Kutch as the earliest known caravanserai — a fortified rural stopover that supported long-distance trade between 2300 and 1900 BCE. The findings now push back the origins of organised trade infrastructure in the subcontinent by over 2,000 years.Lead researcher Prabodh Shirvalkar from Deccan College told TOI: “This is the first confirmed archaeological evidence of a caravanserai in the Harappan world — a type of infrastructure previously known only from later historical periods.”Excavated between 2010 and 2013 in collaboration with Gujarat State Archaeology Department, the site has now been reinterpreted using advanced techniques— including ground penetrating radar, magnetic and satellite surveys, isotopic and lipid analyses, and three forms of dating, Shirvalkar added.Researchers, including Esha Prasad and Yadubirsingh Rawat, said the finding bridges a key missing link in the trade mechanism of the Indus Valley Civilization, revealing how long-distance overland trade was supported by an organised system of rest stops and logistical hubs — a structure previously thought to have emerged only in the early historic or medieval periods.While the existence of Harappan trade with Mesopotamia and inland India is well-established, the mechanism of how merchants, animals and goods actually moved across land remained unclear. The new study proposes that Harappan commerce depended on a network of small fortified stopovers, strategically placed along trade routes between urban centres like Dholavira, Lothal and Shikarpur in Gujarat.Earlier excavations revealed a multi-roomed central building, fortified walls with bastions, and large open spaces that were likely used to hold animals and goods — all consistent with a caravanserai’s layout.Shirvalkar added that the site was small, strategically placed and fortified, but non-urban — designed for short halts rather than permanent residence. By identifying caravanserai-like traits — fortification, animal pens, open spaces, food waste and imported goods — the paper said that Harappans maintained an organised trade infrastructure two millennia before the Silk Route.“The Harappan economy was not just about city markets and ports like Dholavira or Lothal. It had a logistical backbone. . NEW DELHI: A goods train got derailed between Virndaban Road and Ajhai stations in Mathura district at around 8 pm on Tuesday. Railway rescue teams are on their way. Three out of the four tracks have been completely blocked by the overturned wagons. As a result, all train services between Delhi towards Agra, Jhansi and Mumbai have been suspended.CPRO NCR Shashikant Tripathi said around 10–12 wagons of the rake derailed. The train belonged to PMRG (Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Plant, Khedar, Hisar/Barwala, Haryana) and was carrying coal.The UP and DOWN lines, along with a third track, have been affected. The fourth track remains open but must be inspected and declared fit before train operations towards Delhi can resume. . NEW DELHI: A goods train got derailed between Virndaban Road and Ajhai stations in Mathura district at around 8 pm on Tuesday. Railway rescue teams are on their way. Three out of the four tracks have been completely blocked by the overturned wagons. As a result, all train services between Delhi towards Agra, Jhansi and Mumbai have been suspended.CPRO NCR Shashikant Tripathi said around 10–12 wagons of the rake derailed. The train belonged to PMRG (Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Plant, Khedar, Hisar/Barwala, Haryana) and was carrying coal.The UP and DOWN lines, along with a third track, have been affected. The fourth track remains open but must be inspected and declared fit before train operations towards Delhi can resume. The coalition, comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, has struggled to finalise seat-sharing arrangements, resulting in overlapping nominations, last-minute withdrawals, and what leaders describe as “friendly fights” across several constituencies.At the centre of the friction lies the distribution of Bihar’s 243 assembly seats among alliance partners. The RJD, the dominant party in the bloc, has fielded 143 candidates, while Congress is contesting 61 seats and the remaining seats are being shared among the CPI(ML) and smaller allies.In several constituencies, including Vaishali and Darbhanga, both RJD and Congress candidates have entered the fray, creating confusion within local units.In Darbhanga’s Gaura Bauram seat, for instance, an RJD nominee remained in the contest even after the constituency was allocated to the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) following last-minute negotiations.With the nomination deadline already over for Phase 1, the candidate could not withdraw, forcing RJD leaders to campaign in a seat technically assigned to an ally. The withdrawal date for Phase 2 ends on Thursday.A similar overlap has been reported in parts of the Vaishali district, where local committees of both RJD and Congress have announced nominees despite attempts by the central leadership to coordinate. UP CM Yogi Adityanath (Photo credit: ANI) LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that 1,000 quintals of wheat seed have been sent to Punjab for the farmers affected by recent floods in the state, highlighting his government’s support for farmers during natural disasters.The chief minister today attended the seed assistance vehicle flag off program for food affected farmers in Punjab. Addressing the gathering, CM Yogi said, “The flood in Punjab has impacted public life, including seed storage, which could affect agricultural growth. In this time of crisis, we stand with the farmers of Punjab. Today, 1,000 quintals of wheat seed are being sent, and I thank the Agriculture Department and the Seed Department for this initiative.”He added that the wheat variety being sent matures in 155 days and yields up to 80 quintals per hectare, emphasizing the quality of the seeds provided.The chief minister also paid tribute to Harvinder Sahib Govind on his birth anniversary, noting his contributions to public welfare.”Today is also the birth anniversary of Harvinder Sahib Govind, who worked extensively for the upliftment of the people, and when he visited Punjab, lamps were lit for him,” CM said.Highlighting past relief efforts, CM Yogi said that during floods in Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, the UP government had also sent relief materials and provided assistance through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. “And today, we are receiving praise for sending 1,000 quintals of seed to the farmers of Punjab. NAGPUR: In a worrying trend, accidents, poaching, and electrocution accounted for a significant number of 142 tiger and 537 leopard deaths reported in Maharashtra from Jan 2022 to Sept 2025. The big cat fatality data was provided by the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF), Nagpur, in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query.The report states that 35 tigers and 115 leopards have died in Maharashtra this year till Sept. In comparison, 26 tiger deaths were reported in 2024, 52 in 2023, and 29 in 2022. Among this year’s tiger deaths, 21 were due to natural causes, five from accidents, another five linked to electrocution and poaching, and four due to unspecified reasons.Of the 142 tiger fatalities reported since 2022, natural deaths accounted for 84 cases, while 23 were killed in accidents and 29 fell to poaching. In six cases, the cause of death remained unclear. Experts say poachers commonly use electrocution and traps in forest fringes.“Poachers target big cats mainly for their body parts and claws, which have high value in the black market. They are also killed to prevent attacks on livestock,” said a wildlife crime analyst.Leopard deaths, which stood at 115 so far in 2025, included 44 from natural causes, 42 from accidents, two from hunting, three from electrocution, and 21 from other causes. In the past, the state had recorded 144 leopard deaths in 2024, 138 in 2023, and 140 in 2022.The data was issued in response to a RTI filed by Abhay Kolarkar.The data confirms that Maharashtra’s tiger population stands at 444, as per ‘Status of Tigers in India 2022’ report published by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. Prisoners are allowed to meet their families during festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Eid, and Diwali. Representational image (PTI file photo) NEW DELHI: More than 30 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were stranded at sea amid rough weather, have regained satellite phone connectivity after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) restored Inmarsat services, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday. Sitharaman said a private operator had also temporarily resumed connectivity for several users, helping many stranded fishermen receive weather alerts and take precautions to return safely. In a post on X, she wrote, “Heartening to note that Inmarsat satellite phone services have been restored for over 30 fishermen currently out in the deep sea, following the intervention of BSNL and DoT. The private operator has temporarily resumed connectivity successfully for many users, enabling communication with those at high sea.”Sitharaman also mentioned that BSNL and the DoT are working with the private operator to ensure full service restoration for the remaining fishermen. On Sunday, she had said the Centre was working to restore connectivity after being informed about the loss of contact with several fishermen at sea. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal, likely to intensify into a deep depression and cause rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, and coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, and south Tamil Nadu till October 21. The Congress party gave an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that Shri Ram was a myth, and the Samajwadi Party had fired bullets at Ram devotees in this very Ayodhya,” he said.He accused the opposition of double standards, saying, “These are the same people who pray at Babar’s tomb but rejected the invitation to the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla in the temple at Ayodhya.”’They erased Ayodhya’s identity’Continuing his criticism, CM Yogi said the opposition parties had for decades attempted to undermine the spiritual heritage of Ayodhya.“We must remember their double standards. These are the same people who, during the Ram Mandir movement, deployed separate advocates to prevent the construction of the temple in Ayodhya, so they could protest and create obstacles in the path of the Ram Mandir. But today we can say they fired bullets; we are lighting lamps in Ayodhya,” he said.He further claimed that the previous governments had “erased Ayodhya’s identity” by renaming it Faizabad. “We have restored the name and legacy of Ayodhya, making it Ayodhya Dham again,” he added.’A festival of truth and faith’Reflecting on the origins of Deepotsav, CM Yogi recalled the humble beginnings of the celebration when his government revived the tradition in 2017.“When we decided in 2017 to organise the first Deepotsav in Ayodhya Dham, the sentiment behind it was singular: to show the world how lamp-lighting should be done and on what occasion it should be celebrated,” he said.He added that the festival symbolised a return to India’s ancient roots: “Thousands of years ago, when the world was living in darkness, Ayodhya had lit lamps to welcome its Lord, its deity, and the arrival of its faith–those very lamps became the great festival of Sanatana Dharma in the form of Deepotsav and Deepawali.”From 1.71 lakh diyas to millionsThe chief minister also recalled the logistical challenges faced during the inaugural Deepotsav.“When we decided to carry forward that campaign again to keep the spirit of Deepotsav alive, in 2017 we did not have sufficient lamps. We collected lamps from across the state and managed to light 1.71 lakh diyas. Speaking at the ninth edition of Deepotsav-2025 in Shri Ayodhya Dham, the chief minister framed the festival as both a spiritual celebration and a symbolic triumph of truth over falsehood.’They called Lord Ram a myth’Addressing thousands gathered amid the glow of millions of diyas, CM Yogi alleged that both Congress and SP had worked to “erase Ayodhya’s identity” and hinder the construction of the Ram Temple.‘Why Spend Money On Diyas’: Akhilesh Yadav’s Remark On Ayodhya Deepotsav Sparks Row, BJP Hits Out“While we are illuminating Ayodhya with millions of lamps, we must not forget that during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, the Congress party declared in court that Lord Shri Ram was a myth. The Congress party gave an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that Shri Ram was a myth, and the Samajwadi Party had fired bullets at Ram devotees in this very Ayodhya,” he said.He accused the opposition of double standards, saying, “These are the same people who pray at Babar’s tomb but rejected the invitation to the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla in the temple at Ayodhya.”’They erased Ayodhya’s identity’Continuing his criticism, CM Yogi said the opposition parties had for decades attempted to undermine the spiritual heritage of Ayodhya.“We must remember their double standards. These are the same people who, during the Ram Mandir movement, deployed separate advocates to prevent the construction of the temple in Ayodhya, so they could protest and create obstacles in the path of the Ram Mandir. But today we can say they fired bullets; we are lighting lamps in Ayodhya,” he said.He further claimed that the previous governments had “erased Ayodhya’s identity” by renaming it Faizabad. “We have restored the name and legacy of Ayodhya, making it Ayodhya Dham again,” he added.’A festival of truth and faith’Reflecting on the origins of Deepotsav, CM Yogi recalled the humble beginnings of the celebration when his government revived the tradition in 2017.“When we decided in 2017 to organise the first Deepotsav in Ayodhya Dham, the sentiment behind it was singular: to show the world how lamp-lighting should be done and on what occasion it should be celebrated,” he said.He added that the festival symbolised a return to India’s ancient roots: “Thousands of years ago, when the world was living in darkness, Ayodhya had lit lamps to welcome its Lord, its deity, and the arrival of its faith–those very lamps became the great festival of Sanatana Dharma in the form of Deepotsav and Deepawali.”From 1.71 lakh diyas to millionsThe chief minister also recalled the logistical challenges faced during the inaugural Deepotsav.“When we decided to carry forward that campaign again to keep the spirit of Deepotsav alive, in 2017 we did not have sufficient lamps. We collected lamps from across the state and managed to light 1.71 lakh diyas. NEW DELHI: Framing a unique standard operating procedure, Supreme Court has directed that if a poor person, arrested for an offence and lodged in jail pending trial, is unable to furnish monetary surety for bail, government concerned through district legal services authority will provide it to ensure release, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra. The new SOP was framed by SC after incorporating suggestions from amicus curiae.The new SOP was framed by a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and S C Sharma after incorporating suggestions from amicus curiae and senior advocate Sidharth Luthra and additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati.The case was taken up suo motu by SC after learning that thousands of undertrials are languishing in jail despite being granted bail just because of their inability to fill bail bonds with or without sureties. The bench said district legal services authority (DLSA) can fill a surety amount up to Rs 1 lakh and if the trial court has fixed it higher than Rs 1 lakh, then it would file an application to get it reduced.
