NEW DELHI: Five Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft out of Indonesian airspace on Wednesday as he departed Jakarta for Australia after concluding his three-day state visit.According to visuals shared by news agency PTI, PM Modi acknowledged the fighter jets from inside the aircraft as they escorted his plane.Before his departure, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally saw off the Prime Minister at the airport.PM Modi had also received a similar ceremonial welcome on Monday, when Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorted his aircraft upon entering Indonesian airspace.During his visit, Modi was warmly received by President Prabowo in Jakarta and witnessed a traditional dance performance.As he concluded the visit, the Prime Minister said the trip had opened “new avenues for cooperation” across key sectors, including defence, maritime collaboration, artificial intelligence and digital innovation.”As I conclude my visit to Indonesia, I leave with immense satisfaction at the outcomes achieved as far as the future of our partnership is concerned. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Indonesia and to President Prabowo Subianto for his exceptional warmth and personal commitment to taking India-Indonesia relations to new heights,” Modi said.During wide-ranging talks on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, covering political, defence, economic, technological and regional cooperation.According to a joint statement, Modi’s July 6-8 state visit marked an important milestone in bilateral ties following President Prabowo’s visit to India as the Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day celebrations in January 2025. The two leaders agreed to hold regular summit meetings, including on the sidelines of multilateral events, while strengthening existing bilateral dialogue mechanisms.The leaders held bilateral talks in Jakarta, discussed a broad range of issues and witnessed the exchange of several agreements. Prime Minister Modi also addressed the Indonesian Parliament and attended a reception hosted by the Indian community.On defence and maritime cooperation, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence ties through regular dialogues, joint military exercises, staff talks, defence research, co-production of defence technologies, hydrography, peacekeeping, information sharing and defence industrial cooperation. NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut on Wednesday launched a sharp attack over the assault on women doctors and nurses at Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation Hospital and asked the chief minister to “worship” the home ministry portfolio he holds.In a post on X, Raut demanded strict punishment for the “Mindhe gang.””Honourable chief minister Devendra Fadnavis ji, please worship the home minister portfolio you hold! The angels in white clothes who served the people during the Corona period, those women doctors and nurses, are beaten inhumanely by the Mindhe gang’s thugs who barge into the hospital—is this the rule of law?” he asked.Raut further called on CM Fadnavis to “put handcuffs on all of them and parade them in the streets in just their underwear and vest!”This comes after Ramesh Mhatre came under scrutiny after CCTV footage purportedly showed him and several of his supporters assaulting doctors and hospital staff inside a municipal hospital in Maharashtra’s Kalyan.According to hospital officials, the incident stemmed from the treatment of a woman admitted to Shastrinagar Hospital for childbirth. Following a caesarean delivery, doctors found that the newborn required specialised medical care because the umbilical cord had been wrapped around the baby’s neck twice.As the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was reportedly operating at full capacity, the attending doctors, Dr Srushti Baviskar and Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe, advised the family to shift the infant to another medical facility equipped to provide the required treatment.Meanwhile, Mhatre refuted all allegations of assaulting women doctors and nurses at a Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) hospital, saying the CCTV footage “may look that way” because of the camera angle. Mhatre asserted that he did not raise his hand against any medical staff during the visit.Speaking at a press conference, the Shiv Sena corporator expressed regret over the incident and alleged that the nurse was not listening to the grievances and was constantly speaking on her phone, after which he tapped her on the hand.”I express regret over the incident of assault that took place. I state with full confidence that I did not raise my hand against the female doctor. What appears in the CCTV footage might look that way due to the camera angle. I address her informally (using ‘tu’) because she is like a daughter to me. I am not even aware of whether she is married or not. While we were conversing, she kept talking on the phone and was not listening to our grievance; that is why I tapped her on the hand. We have been guided by Balasaheb’s teachings,” he said.”We have never raised a hand against women, nor will we ever do so in the future. The incident occurred due to systemic shortcomings within the hospital. We will strive to address those deficiencies. The individuals who prompted my visit there will provide further details regarding the entire incident. The people who had called me did not answer my calls. I arrived at the scene considering the gravity of the situation. Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday wrote to 29 automobile manufacturers, seeking a written clarification on the impact of E20 ethanol-blended fuel on vehicle mileage and engines safety and asked them to respond within seven days.Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said he had sent separate letters to Maruti Suzuki India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Hero MotoCorp, while the remaining 26 companies received a different communication seeking their position on E20 fuel. The letters have already been prepared and are being dispatched while this press conference is underway,” Kejriwal said.Kejriwal said the three companies had stated during the Centre’s July 4 press conference that E20 fuel could be safely used in older vehicles, with only a marginal reduction in mileage.”During the government’s press conference on July 4, their representatives stated that it is safe to use E20 fuel in older vehicles. They said fuel efficiency may decline slightly by around 3–5% but that it does not damage the vehicle,” he said.However, he alleged that this contradicted the companies’ own owner’s manuals.”However, their owners’ manuals state that under no circumstances should vehicles manufactured before 2023 use petrol blended with more than 10% ethanol. These are two contradictory positions,” Kejriwal said.He added that the owner’s manual forms part of the agreement between the company and the consumer.”Your published owner’s manual, which forms part of the agreement between the consumer and the company, says one thing, while your representatives say something entirely different at a government press conference. This is not a minor mistake or discrepancy. Therefore, I have asked them to publicly clarify their actual position in writing,” he said.In his letters to Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Kirloskar and Hero MotoCorp, Kejriwal sought a written assurance that consumers would be compensated if E20 fuel reduced mileage or caused any damage to their vehicles.The remaining 26 automobile manufacturers have been asked to clarify their position on the use of E20 fuel, its impact on vehicle performance and mileage, and respond to concerns being raised by consumers.Earlier on Tuesday, the party chief said he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week, urging the government to make E20 fuel optional.”Prime Minister, why should the public suffer for your misadventure? Tell us who will pay the penalty if our mileage drops or our vehicles are damaged — your government or the company?” Kejriwal said. He also urged the Centre to allow consumers to choose between different grades of petrol.”With folded hands, I request Modi ji to agree to the demand of the public to give them an option – where all variants of fuel, be it E20, E10 or E0 – all are made available at petrol pumps at separate pricing,” he added.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday termed the ministry of environment as “Pravachan mantralay (ministry of sermons)” after the Centre removed four officials from environment minister Bhupender Yadav’s office.In a post on X, Congress MP and former environment minister Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that all key appointments in the personal staff of Union ministers are vetted by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).”During the Modi regime, all key appointments in the personal staff of ministers are vetted by the PMO,” the Congress leader said.”Now four close aides of the Union minister of environment, forests and climate change have been sacked in two batches over two successive days. One of the aides is widely considered the closest of close confidants of the minister concerned,” he added.Jairam Ramesh also alleged that the Environment Ministry has, in recent years, done little to protect the environment and forests.”Clearly there has been a collapse of governance in this important ministry, which has, in recent years, done little to protect the environment and forests and to deal with the implications of climate change,” the Congress leader said.”Meanwhile, ecological destruction across the country continues unabated — including in Great Nicobar, the dense forest areas of central and east India, the Aravalli Range, and other biodiversity-rich ecosystems. Air pollution continues to extract a heavy toll on public health, and standards that need to be updated and enforced simply are not. The list is endless. But does the Modi regime even care? The ministry has not given any specific reason for their abrupt removal.The officials include Yadav’s private secretary, assistant private secretary and two additional private secretaries.Yadav’s private secretary, Amar Singh, a 2010-batch IRS officer, was removed on “administrative grounds”. The appointments of assistant private secretary Siddharth Yadav and additional private secretary Ayush Saran, both political appointees, were terminated with immediate effect. The other additional private secretary, Shailesh Kumar Singh, a Central Secretariat Service official, was “prematurely repatriated” to his parent cadre, the Department of Personnel and Training.Reacting to the development earlier, Jairam Ramesh also raised suspicions of a scam.”The news of the sackings of four members of the staff of the Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change is shocking. It is no secret how such appointments are made in the first place during the Modi regime. Can there be so much smoke without any fire? During bilateral talks on Tuesday, PM Modi and Prabowo exchanged a Letter of Intent for the preservation initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.Located on the island of Java, Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex and the second-largest in Southeast Asia after Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Spread across nearly 40 hectares, the site originally consisted of around 240 temples and remains one of Indonesia’s most important cultural landmarks, reflecting centuries-old links between the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.Built in the 9th century during the Hindu Mataram Kingdom, the temple complex is believed to have been commissioned by King Rakai Pikatan and completed by his successor Lokapala. At its centre stand three towering temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, with the 47-metre Shiva Temple serving as the complex’s tallest and most prominent structure.The temple walls are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics, showcasing the cultural and religious exchanges that flourished across Southeast Asia through ancient maritime trade routes.Prambanan was abandoned in the 10th century, with historians linking its decline to political changes in Java and volcanic activity from nearby Mount Merapi. Many structures were later damaged by earthquakes before restoration efforts began under Dutch colonial rule in the 19th century. Large-scale archaeological reconstruction between 1913 and 1953 restored the main temples.Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, Prambanan is now one of Indonesia’s leading cultural attractions. NEW DELHI: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple in Indonesia on Wednesday, the visit will signify a broader diplomatic approach that has increasingly placed India’s shared civilisational heritage at the centre of its engagement with Asia.Over the past 12 years, the Modi government has backed the restoration and conservation of ancient temples, archaeological sites and cultural landmarks across several countries, using heritage as a pillar of India’s soft power and regional diplomacy.From Southeast Asia to the Gulf, India has supported the preservation of monuments that reflect centuries-old cultural, religious and civilisational links. Many of these projects have been undertaken through grant assistance, archaeological cooperation and bilateral agreements, reinforcing ties with partner countries while safeguarding shared heritage.One of the earliest initiatives came in Vietnam, where India signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2014 to restore the UNESCO-listed Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary. Once the spiritual centre of the ancient Champa Kingdom, the Shaivite temple complex is regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most significant Hindu heritage sites. The Archaeological Survey of India led the conservation work under the bilateral agreement.In Myanmar, India signed an MoU in 2017 to restore monuments damaged by the 2016 earthquake in the UNESCO-listed Bagan Archaeological Zone. The restoration included 12 historic pagodas and the iconic Ananda Temple, one of Myanmar’s most revered Buddhist monuments.Following the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, India launched one of its largest heritage conservation initiatives abroad. Under a US$50 million reconstruction package, restoration work was undertaken at 28 cultural heritage sites, including the historic Seto Machhindranath Temple and the Budhanilkantha Temple Dharamshala.India has also played a major role in conserving Cambodia’s Angkor heritage complex. From 2022 onwards, conservation work expanded across key monuments, including Ta Prohm, Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear, helping preserve one of the world’s greatest centres of Hindu civilisation outside India.In Laos, India completed restoration work at the UNESCO-listed Vat Phou Temple in 2024. The nearly 1,000-year-old Shiva temple remains one of the oldest surviving symbols of Sanatan civilisation in Southeast Asia.The Modi government also extended cultural cooperation to Bangladesh, where India assisted in rebuilding the historic Ramna Kali Temple in Dhaka, destroyed during Pakistan’s Operation Searchlight in 1971. The temple was inaugurated in 2021, marking the restoration of one of Bangladesh’s most significant Hindu shrines.India also financed the reconstruction of the nearly 300-year-old Joy Kali Mata Temple in Natore through grant assistance. Restoration support was further extended to the Anandomoyee Kali Mata Mandir and the Ramakrishna Temple, helping preserve important centres of Hindu faith in Bangladesh.In Sri Lanka, India signed an agreement in 2015 to restore the historic Thiruketheeswaram Temple, one of the island nation’s five ancient Pancha Ishwarams dedicated to Lord Shiva. The project was undertaken through grant assistance amounting to LKR 326 million.During his landmark visit to Bahrain in 2019, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the redevelopment of the 200-year-old Shreenathji Temple in Manama. The US$4.2 million project preserved one of the Gulf region’s oldest Hindu temples and reflected India’s growing cultural engagement beyond South Asia.Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Prambanan Temple in Indonesia now adds another chapter to this broader civilisational outreach. Although Prambanan itself was not restored by India, the visit highlights New Delhi’s growing emphasis on strengthening diplomatic ties through shared history, culture and heritage.Over the past decade, heritage conservation has emerged as an important dimension of India’s foreign policy, complementing strategic, economic and security partnerships. Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay New Delhi: Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a plea by DMK seeking an order restraining Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay from making statements on the Karur stampede and told the party not to use the judicial forum as a political platform to proceed against an adversary. It also asked how a court could tell the elected head of a state what to say.At the outset of the hearing, a bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe expressed reservations on entertaining the plea against the CM and other state ministers. “You want the CM’s message to be regulated by SC and fix his itinerary?” the bench said.Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for the petitioner, said TVK ministers were making public statements that were creating a “narrative” on the stampede case. He said compensation was being paid to the victims’ families and they were also being given compassionate appointm-ents, hinting that these may influence those who were witnesses. The bench asked how these could affect the investigation.”So you want us to impose an injunction on free speech? You counter their speech with your speech. How does SC, in a matter where it ordered a CBI investigation, allow the impleadment of a political rival?” it said.Kumar referred to SC’s order in the Arvind Kejriwal case, where the then Delhi CM was asked not to make statements, and pleaded that a similar order be passed ag-ainst the TN CM. The bench pointed out the latter was not an accused in the case.When Kumar said Vijay was accused number one, the court asked him to verify the facts as the CM had not been named in the first FIR lodged during DMK govt’s tenure. The 65-year-old from Chaturi village in Gujarat’s Amreli district would rebuke neighbours for harassing or photographing the animals. Then, on June 24, everything changed. A lioness snatched his five-year-old grandson from just outside their home.Today, Siddha says he would kill a lion to protect his family. “I don’t care if forest officials send me to jail afterwards,” he says.The attack was so close to the house that even the Gujarat forest department called it highly unusual. That day, nearly 500 villagers chased the lioness for close to a kilometre before they cornered her in the bushes. “Recovering the body was harder still. She just would not release it. She kept lunging at the crowd each time they closed in,” recalls Himat Vora from a neighbouring village.Four fatal attacks in 15 days”We trusted the lions. Now, we no longer do,” says Haresh Siddha, the boy’s uncle.That trust took generations to build, and it is what has made Gujarat’s lions a conservation success.A century ago, the Asiatic lion was hunted almost to extinction. Today, Gujarat is home to 891 of them, and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature, a global environmental organisation headquartered in Switzerland), recognises the state as the species’ last stronghold.Lion population has more than doubled in 20 yearsThe recovery is usually credited to monitoring and legal protection. But the real reason is harder to measure.Testing Tolerance For decades, lions wandered through Saurashtra’s villages after nightfall, and people accepted their presence. That long-standing tolerance is now being tested.The Chaturi attack was the fourth fatal one in 15 days. On June 11, a seven-year-old, the son of a migrant labourer, was killed at Ghantiyan in Bagasara. On June 16, a 30-year-old man was killed near Kovaya in Rajula and partly eaten, and on June 17, 30-year-old Nagji Gujariya was killed as he walked home in Mahuva. Gujariya was almost home that evening. It was around 8pm, and he was barely 100 metres from his door in Khared Gadhda, when the lion attacked him. They found his remains the next day. His skull was recovered some distance away.”Lions frequently move through our private lands,” says his mother, Devu. “The forest department seems to believe the lions should never be harmed, even when they kill people or livestock.”Mauling On CameraOn Sunday night (July 5), a lion entered Thavi village in Amreli’s Savarkundla belt and attacked young cattle-herder Raju Vaghela as he slept in the cattle shed outside his home. Neighbours armed with sticks drove the lion away. Vaghela needed more than 20 stitches for the wounds on his leg.On Monday morning, in Garajiya village of Palitana taluka in Bhavnagar, a subadult lion pinned Maldhari herder Kalu Parmar to the ground for nearly half an hour, holding him down each time he tried to rise as villagers shouted and threw stones. He never bit him. Parmar escaped with claw injuries, and a video of him lying beneath the lion, patting it, has been widely shared.Official figures show deaths from lion attacks climbing from two a year in 2020-21 to seven in 2024-25, before easing to five last year; injuries peaked at 42 in 2024-25 and fell to 13 the year after. But four deaths in a fortnight, followed by two more maulings on consecutive days, represent an alarming departure.Cub Dead, Lions CapturedThe attacks have left people frightened and furious. They once called the lions their pride, but now they just want them gone. What worries forest officials the most is what this anger could lead to. “Our biggest fear is that people may attack and kill lions, like it happens in some tiger landscapes,” says a senior official.There are already signs of hostility towards lions. In June, an eight-month-old lion cub was found dead with severe injuries near Junagadh, and a man was arrested under the Wildlife Protection Act.The forest department has been pulling lions out of the trouble spots. At least 30 were captured across Saurashtra in June, from areas including Mahuva, Bagasara, Khambha and Rajula. The state’s principal chief conservator of forests, Jaipal Singh, was quoted by PTI as saying, “Of those, five or six suspected man-eaters are being kept in captivity.”‘They Abuse And Assault Us’A conservation model built on tolerance can collapse quickly when trust begins to disappear. For now, all anger is aimed at forest staff. After the Chaturi boy was killed, nearly 2,000 people gathered outside the govt hospital in Khambha, many ready to confront officials, until local leaders stepped in. Senior officers asked state forest and environment minister Arjun Modhwadia to visit the family and defuse the anger among the people. The minister met the family and assured residents that the govt would frame a standard operating procedure to prevent such attacks.For frontline staff, facing angry crowds has become part of the job. “Villagers abuse us and sometimes even assault us. We can only stay calm and try to reason with them,” says forester Anil Rathod.Beat guard Pravin Baloch says villagers once seized his motorcycle keys and forced him to call senior officials, demanding that the lion responsible be caught. Police often have to step in.The Forest Is FullThe forest can no longer contain the lions. There are more of them than Gir can hold, and they have spread beyond its boundaries. Amreli district has 339, ahead of Gir Somnath’s 222 and Bhavnagar’s 116, and many now live on gauchar (grazing) and revenue land, in coastal scrub and on farms. “Lions now move across coastal villages,” says sarpanch Savji Babu.Studies of Gir’s lions have found they hunt largely at night, resting through the day, arranging their movements around human activity. In Gir, the Maldhari herders have had the better part of 150 years to learn to live beside them. Outside Gir, many communities are still learning how to share space.Reels And CrowdsSome villagers argue the lions themselves have changed, insisting these are not the “original Gir lions”, but animals brought from “elsewhere”. Officials reject this contention, though they concede that constant disturbance from people may be affecting the way lions behave.Ajit Bhatt, a conservation activist in Amreli, blames illegal lion shows and tourism driven by social media. “There are WhatsApp groups and mobile apps that immediately alert people whenever a lion makes a kill near revenue areas,” he says. “Cars arrive from Rajkot and Bhavnagar. People record videos, make reels and disturb lions while they are feeding or resting. Irritated lions may later attack innocent villagers.”Even then, he says, such attacks are rare. “What is rarer is lions preying on humans. That’s baffling,” he adds. Bhushan Pandya, a wildlife photographer, says Gujarat cannot afford to lose the goodwill of the communities that made lion conservation possible. “Without the cooperation and support of local communities, conservation is not possible,” he says.For communities living near lions, that relationship has also been supported by compensation. Govt provides Rs 10 lakh for human deaths caused by wild animals. For livestock, it’s between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000.Frontline Demands But maintaining that relationship requires more than compensation. The department responsible for managing it says it is short of nearly everything it needs. Officials want hydraulic vehicles to lift large animals, new vans, modern rescue centres, insurance for staff who handle dangerous wildlife, and more petrol than the 30 litres a month a beat guard is currently allowed.The lions have redrawn their territory but the administrative map has yet to catch up, say sources. A lion can move a few metres and cross from one forest division into another; where those jurisdictions overlap, rescue and response can slow down. Officials now want the boundaries redrawn.Ajay Parmar of Khared Gadhda village, who survived a lion attack two years ago, says people are discouraged from carrying sticks or installing battery-operated fencing on their farmland. Officials dispute that claim. “We advise people living in revenue areas to carry sticks and torches for self-defence,” says Chirag Amin, deputy conservator of forests, Shetrunji division. “Restrictions are for reserve forest areas.”The fear has begun to reshape ordinary routines. Some parents have stopped sending their children to school, unwilling to risk the walk. What unsettles them most is that they never saw the change coming.The lion was the one wild thing they had always felt safe around. New Delhi: Calling the independence of the legal profession as important as the independence of the judiciary, Supreme Court Tuesday said the former must remain self-regulated. External agencies or institutions could not record adverse findings and opinions about the professional standing of advocates, the court said, as this was the exclusive domain of the Bar Council. It held that banks could not blacklist an advocate by putting his name on a ‘caution list’.A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, however, underscored the need for lawyers to upgrade their skill in the continuously evolving legal profession and suggested setting up of a National Legal Academy for advocates on the lines of National Judicial Academy, which was established for judges. It also said disciplinary action taken by Bar Council of India must strengthen people’s trust in the system.”The right and privilege of self-regulation of the Bar, through peer review, must withstand scrutiny on the touchstones of transparency, accountability, and institutional effectiveness. Public confidence in the legal profession, which is indispensable to the administration of justice, can be sustained only when disciplinary mechanisms inspire trust and credibility,” the apex court said.”We have, therefore, considered it appropriate to direct Bar Council of India to undertake a performance audit of the efficacy and credibility of its disciplinary powers and to adopt such corrective and remedial measures as may be found necessary,” the bench added.SC had appointed senior advocate Maninder Singh as amicus curiae. The bench accepted Singh’s submission, which said any allegation of professional misconduct against an advocate was exclusively reserved for the statutory jurisdiction of the Bar Council concerned.Blocking the involvement of outsiders in disciplining lawyers accused of professional misconduct, SC said allowed the plea of an advocate who challenged Canara Bank’s decision to put his name on a caution list for allegedly giving a wrong opinion. Private Schools Gain 88 Lakh In Same Period New Delhi: Private schools are gaining students at the cost of govt schools, reshaping who studies where in India’s classrooms.While overall school enrolment has held broadly steady over two years, govt schools lost nearly 86 lakh students between 2023-24 and 2025-26, even as private unaided recognised schools added over 88 lakh of them.A TOI analysis of UDISE+ NEP-structure reports for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 (released Tuesday) shows total enrolment from foundational to secondary level at 24.7 crore in 2025-26, compared with 24.8 crore in 2023-24 – a decline of about 8.3 lakh. But within this nearly flat headline number, enrolment in govt schools fell from 12.8 crore to 11.9 crore, while that in private unaided recognised schools rose from 9 crore to 9.9 crore.The shift comes at a time when school system has shown improvement on several access and infrastructure indicators. The number of schools declined marginally from 14.7 lakh to 14.7 lakh, but the teacher base rose from 98 lakh to 1 crore, improving the overall pupil-teacher ratio from 25 to 24. Number of zero-enrolment schools fell from 12,954 to 5,663, while single-teacher schools declined from 1.1 lakh to 1 lakh.The clearest academic access gain is at secondary level. Secondary GER rose from 66.5 in 2023-24 to 71.7 in 2025-26, while secondary dropout fell from 10.9% to 7%. The transition rate from middle to secondary improved from 83.3% to 88.3%, and secondary level retention rose from 45.6% to 51.9%. Girls continued to do better than boys at secondary stage: in 2025-26, girls had higher GER (74 vs 69.6), lower dropout (5.7% vs 8.3%) and better retention (55% vs 49.2%).The level-wise enrolment pattern has also changed. Secondary enrolment rose by about 31.5 lakh between 2023-24 and 2025-26, while preparatory enrolment fell by over 42 lakh. Foundational enrolment rose only marginally. The reports note that UDISE+ foundational data does not include Anganwadi enrolment, which limits how far school-based pre-primary numbers can be read as the full Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) picture.Infrastructure has shown a sharper improvement in digital access than in basic amenities, many of which are already near saturation. Schools with computer facility rose from 57.2% to 69.9%, while internet facilities rose from 53.9% to 67.4%.Drinking water reached 99.5%, toilets 99.1%, girls’ toilets 98.5% and electricity 95%. But gaps remain in inclusive and climate-linked infrastructure: only 40.1% schools had CWSN-friendly toilets, 58.2% had ramps with handrails, 29.9% had functional rainwater harvesting and 11.5% had solar panels.State-wise, Uttar Pradesh recorded the largest enrolment gain over two years, followed by Telangana and Jharkhand. Rajasthan, Bihar and TN saw the steepest enrolment declines. Jharkhand and Haryanaposted the biggest gains in secondary GER, while Bihar, Meghalaya and West Bengal recorded the sharpest falls in secondary dropout.Get the latest India news and live updates. .Hardeep Singh Puri New Delhi: Govt will carry out extensive testing of E25 (petrol blended with 25% ethanol), evaluate reports and consult all stakeholders before taking any decision on its roll out.Amid growing concerns over the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle mileage and performance, and possibility of E25, petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the govt is not rushing the decision. “If someone is suggesting E25, we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time. Once the reports are available, we will evaluate them. Then we will discuss the findings with the stakeholders and the automobile manufacturers,” Puri told news agency ANI.The minister defended the adoption of E20 fuel saying automobile makers have not found any problems in vehicles running on the blended fuel. “Ethanol blending is science-based, adopted after due diligence and extensive testing,” Puri said. Convoy of tankers is seen crossing Strait of Hormuz, vessel tracking data shows NEW DELHI: As on Tuesday, 50 Indian-flagged and foreign-flagged ships, with cargo bound for India, have transited the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the West Asia conflict on Feb 28.At present, only nine Indian vessels are in the Persian Gulf region – in the West of Strait of Hormuz – with 198 Indian seafarers onboard.”The vessels are not struck, and are currently trading or engaged in the region,” a shipping ministry official said. There are no updates on whether ships from India are waiting to go to West Asia through the Strait to pick up fresh consignments. Industry insiders said that it may take a little longer for shipping lines to plan resume sending their vessels to the area.Officials said that while 18-flagged ships have sailed through the strait safely, the remaining 32 are foreign-flagged.Among the ships that have transited so far, a maximum 19 are bulk carriers, 14 carried LPG and 12 more were crude oil tankers. Rs 160 cr allegedly given to company from party a/cs NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate Tuesday carried out searches in Kolkata to probe the purchase of an aircraft — Embraer 600 — and an Agusta 109 SP helicopter for Rs 112 crore by Kolkata-based Carewell Aviation India Pvt Ltd, and Rs 160 crore it allegedly had got from TMC.This aviation company, incorporated in Sept 2021 after TMC came to office for the third time in Bengal with 215 seats, had rented the Embraer and the chopper to TMC as it received funds during 2023 and 2026. Searches were conducted at five places in Kolkata in connection with alleged dishonest financial dealings, sources said. Searches were conducted over unlawful collection of money and routing of suspected funds through certain bank accounts of TMC,” sources said. A senior official said the premises searched belonged to Carewell group of companies. “It has been revealed that around Rs 160 crore was transferred from TMC accounts to Carewell Aviation India Pvt Ltd and its related entity, possibly between April 2023 and June 2026. Carewell Aviation routed Rs 82.9 crore to another newly incorporated related entity in this period,” he added. TOI reached out to Carewell Aviation but there was no response. Sources said ED’s preliminary investigation revealed Carewell transferred significant amounts into a related entity to purchase Embraer Legacy 600, an aircraft suspected to have been largely used by a top TMC neta. The company also used funds to buy a chopper, Agusta 109 SP. ED is probing “foreign funding” used to buy the chopper. However, most of the funds have been sourced directly from TMC accounts, the source added. “The Embraer Legacy aircraft and the Agusta helicopter were rented out to TMC itself, even though they were purchased allegedly from the corpus of TMC,” a source said.Get the latest India news and live updates. Double-Engine Govts Reduce Differences: Shah NEW DELHI: Four states adjoining Narmada river – Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra – Tuesday reached an agreement over their decades-old dispute related to the displacement of people in water-submerged areas and compensation for land in the river project.CMs of the four states signed the agreement on settlement of pending payment issues among the Narmada award beneficiaries in the presence of home minister Amit Shah here.After the agreement was signed, Shah said the formation of double-engine govts in several states under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi had enhanced the ability to understand one another, reduced political differences, and accelerated the resolution of many long-pending disputes across the country.”This agreement marks a historic milestone in resolving long-standing disputes among the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra relating to cost-sharing arrangements for the construction of Sardar Sarovar Project. Under the agreement, the payments to be made towards the final settlement of pending dues have been resolved through a one-time settlement,” Shah said.Appreciating the cooperation extended by the govts of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra in building a broad consensus on this important inter-state project, Shah said the project had immensely benefited Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan in particular. Union minister Bhupender Yadav NEW DELHI: The Centre has removed four officials from environment minister Bhupender Yadav’s office. The officials are Yadav’s private secretary, assistant private secretary and two additional private secretaries.Yadav’s private secretary, Amar Singh, a 2010 batch IRS officer, was removed on “administrative grounds”. The appointments of assistant private secretary Siddharth Yadav and an additional private secretary, Ayush Saran, both political appointees, were terminated with immediate effect. The other additional private secretary, Shailesh Kumar Singh – a Central Secretariat Service official – was “prematurely repatriated” to his parent cadre, department of personnel and training.While political and bureaucratic circles speculated about the possible trigger, Jairam Ramesh of Congress raised suspicions of a scam. “The news of the sackings of four members of the staff of the Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change is shocking. It is no secret how such appointments are made in the first place during the Modi regime. Can there be so much smoke without any fire? Could this be an instance of the Pradhan Mantri Chanda Do Dhandha Lo scheme having gone awry?” he wrote on X.The officials were removed through four different orders issued on July 3.
