Cabinet secretary TV Somanathan, home secretary Govind Mohan NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday granted one-year extensions to cabinet secretary TV Somanathan and home secretary Govind Mohan, ahead of the completion of their original two-year tenures later this month.The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet extended Mohan’s tenure till August 23, 2027, and Somanathan’s till August 30, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier in both cases.Mohan is a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre. He took charge as home secretary on August 23, 2024, succeeding Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who is now serving as the governor of Manipur.Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been serving as cabinet secretary since August 30, 2024. India has largely succeeded in getting children into school. For years, corporate social responsibility (CSR) in education was measured by the number of classrooms built, computers donated, or scholarships awarded. Today, that metric is changing. As India’s education system moves beyond expanding access towards improving learning outcomes, companies are increasingly investing in programmes that strengthen govt schools, train teachers, improve employability and build long-term partnerships with public institutions.The shift comes at a critical moment. India has largely succeeded in getting children into school. According to UDISE+ 2024-25, the country has 14.7 lakh schools, 24.7 crore students, and 1 crore teachers. Rural enrolment among children aged 6-14 has reached 98%, while literacy among those aged seven and above stands at 81%.But the next challenge is ensuring children actually learn. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 shows that among Class III students in govt schools, the proportion able to read a Class II-level text improved from 16.3% in 2022 to 23.4% in 2024, while those able to solve subtraction rose from 20.2% to 27.6%. The gains are encouraging but also underline the distance still to be covered.Govt initiatives such as NIPUN Bharat, Samagra Shiksha, PM SHRI and DIKSHA are attempting to address this challenge through foundational literacy, teacher training, digital learning and school infrastructure. Yet the scale of the task means govts alone cannot do everything. That is where CSR is beginning to play a more strategic role.Education has emerged as the single largest recipient of CSR funding in India. According to the latest CSRBOX report, India Inc spent Rs 40,794 crore on CSR during FY2024-25 across more than 72,000 projects. Education accounted for Rs 13,877 crore, or 34% of the total, making it the country’s biggest CSR sector. More significantly, companies are moving away from one-off philanthropy towards multi-year programmes, govt partnerships and data-driven monitoring of outcomes.Bharti Airtel Foundation offers one example of this transition. During FY2024-25, the foundation reported reaching more than 22 lakh students across over 16,000 schools. Its cumulative programmes have impacted 3.7 million students, more than 36,000 schools, and over 3.3 lakh teachers.Rather than focusing solely on infrastructure, its initiatives include teacher support, school transformation, life skills, and community engagement. Its Satya Bharti School Programme operates 164 rural schools across four states, while its Quality Support Programme works with govt schools in 12 states.Another example is Tata STRIVE, which reflects the growing emphasis on employability. In FY2024-25, it directly reached over 4.5 lakh young people and reported cumulative outreach of more than 22.5 lakh beneficiaries through skill development, career guidance, vocational education and entrepreneurship programmes. The focus extends beyond classrooms to ensuring education translates into livelihoods and economic participation.This evolution mirrors the changing needs of India’s education system. While access has improved dramatically, important gaps remain. Mark zuckerberg, CEO, Meta apologises to India Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly sent his apologies on Wednesday for CSAM (child sexual abuse material), deepfake content, and errors in operating the platformThe IT giant admitted that they were paid a”lot of money” for boosting certain type of content, as per PTI sources. The sources said Meta was told that its eligibility for safe-harbour protection under the IT Act could be questioned, as its platforms actively select and distribute content to users rather than merely hosting third-party content. Under Section 79, safe-harbour protection is subject to conditions on how an intermediary handles and distributes such content.The development comes as senior Meta executives met government officials to discuss compliance with Indian laws, content moderation, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and safeguards around AI-generated content.MeitY secretary S Krishnan said Meta executives, including Joel Kaplan, the company’s head of public policy, met government officials on Wednesday and are set to meet again on Thursday.Krishnan said the government wants Meta to explain what measures it has taken to tackle CSAM on its platforms and how effectively it is monitoring synthetically generated content. “We want to ensure that compliance happens. There are a range of issues,” Krishnan said.He added that the government wants to understand the measures being taken to address CSAM and the extent to which AI-generated content is being monitored.The government has also flagged the removal of content posted by verified accounts belonging to prominent personalities after a video of PM Modi was briefly removed from Facebook. Mark zuckerberg, CEO, Meta apologises to India Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly sent his apologies on Wednesday for CSAM (child sexual abuse material), deepfake content, and errors in operating the platformThe IT giant admitted that they were paid a”lot of money” for boosting certain type of content, as per PTI sources. The sources said Meta was told that its eligibility for safe-harbour protection under the IT Act could be questioned, as its platforms actively select and distribute content to users rather than merely hosting third-party content. Under Section 79, safe-harbour protection is subject to conditions on how an intermediary handles and distributes such content.The development comes as senior Meta executives met government officials to discuss compliance with Indian laws, content moderation, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and safeguards around AI-generated content.MeitY secretary S Krishnan said Meta executives, including Joel Kaplan, the company’s head of public policy, met government officials on Wednesday and are set to meet again on Thursday.Krishnan said the government wants Meta to explain what measures it has taken to tackle CSAM on its platforms and how effectively it is monitoring synthetically generated content. “We want to ensure that compliance happens. There are a range of issues,” Krishnan said.He added that the government wants to understand the measures being taken to address CSAM and the extent to which AI-generated content is being monitored.The government has also flagged the removal of content posted by verified accounts belonging to prominent personalities after a video of PM Modi was briefly removed from Facebook. Supreme Court clarifies interim order for new sorganisations on audio-video clips of court proceedings NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has clarified that its July 24 interim order prohibiting news organisations from sharing or uploading audio and video clips of court hearings does not bar them from reporting on judicial proceedings, but that they cannot use such recordings as part of their reportage.A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the restriction is confined to the use of audio and video recordings of judicial proceedings in news reports and should not be interpreted as a blanket ban on reportage by media organisations. Such outlets may, therefore, continue to report on the proceedings and inform the general public of legal developments and judicial pronouncements.”It appears, however, that some confusion persists in respect of paragraph 11 of the earlier order, which this court deems necessary to clarify.
