ANI image NEW DELHI: At least 32,602 cases were lodged for crimes against senior citizens (aged above 60) in 2024, showing a rise of 16.9% in registration over 2023 (27,886 cases), according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data Overall, 27,049 cases of murder were registered during 2024 against 27,721 cases lodged in 2023. Personal enmity and disputes were the prime motives, besides murder for gains. During 2024, 96,079 cases of kidnapping and abduction were registered, showing a decrease of 15.4% over 2023 (1.13 lakh cases). Of the total crimes, 35.4 lakh cases were filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC)and the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) , which was rolled out in 2024, and 23.4 lakh cases were lodged under special and local laws. NCRB also released data of crimes comparing 19 metropolitan cities and stated that 8.4 lakh cognisable crimes were committed in 2024, a dip of 10.9% over 2023 (9.4 lakh cases). A total of 1,987 cases of murder were registered in these cities during 2024, showing a decline of 0.8% over 2023 (2,004 cases). Data also shows that 8.21 lakh fake Indian currency notes with face value Rs 54.6 crore were seized during 2024. On the enforcement side, the authorities managed to seize 3.62 lakh kg of explosives, including RDX and TNT, compared to 10 lakh kg in 2023. Data shows that 55,698 cases were registered in crimes against scheduled castes (SCs), showing a decrease of 3.6% over 2023 (57,789 cases). As many as 9,966 cases were registered for crimes against scheduled tribes (STs), showing a decrease of 23.1% over 2023 (12,960 cases). With 63,564 cases, there was a decline in cases of the Arms Act in 2024 over 73,388 cases in 2023. NEW DELHI: Nearly two in five NEET (UG) aspirants this year came from just four states, highlighting the concentration of India’s medical education aspirants, even as the overall exam base continues to expand. Data from National Testing Agency (NTA)’s state-wise report for NEET (UG) 2026 shows that Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Bihar together accounted for about 9.4 lakh candidates, or 41.4% of the total 22.7 lakh candidates for the exam. Overall participation remained high. Of the 22.7 lakh candidates, over 22 lakh appeared, translating into an attendance rate of 96.9%. A total of 69,976 candidates were absent, or 3% of those allotted centres. The four largest states also topped the list individually. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest allocation at around 3.6 lakh candidates, followed by Maharashtra with 2.2 lakh, Rajasthan with 2 lakh and Bihar with 1.5 lakh. Other high-volume states included Karnataka (1.5 lakh), Tamil Nadu (1.4 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (1.2 lakh), Kerala (1.1 lakh) and West Bengal (1 lakh). Together, the top nine states — from Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal — accounted for over 17 lakh candidates, or roughly threefourths of total pool, indicating a sharp clustering of aspirants in a limited set of large states. In contrast, several smaller states and Union territories reported allocations below 5,000 candidates, underlining the uneven geographic spread of participation. But attendance levels were consistently high across states. Gujarat recorded the highest attendance rate at 98.1%, followed by Puducherry at 98% and Rajasthan at 97.9%. Among large states, Uttar Pradesh (97.5%) and Maharashtra (97.4%) also reported strong turnout. AICC in-charge Girish Chodankar met TVK chief C Joseph Vijay and pledged support of Congress’s five MLAs. “Congress-TVK alliance will continue for local body polls and 2029 Lok Sabha elections,” Chodankar said. The switch redraws the state’s political map and blunts INDIA bloc’s pitch of a united front against BJP. Congress framed its support as a move to “keep away communal forces”. “Is INDIA bloc still alive?” a senior Congress neta asked, citing frictions with regional partners. “We are still uncertain about numbers to form govt in Tamil Nadu. We will focus on INDIA bloc after this,” said Su Thirunavukkarasar.
