NEW DELHI: Bettiah seat is set for a closely contested race between BJP’s Renu Devi, INC’s Wasi Ahmed, and Jan Suraaj’s Anil Singh as the constituency awaits results today. Bettiah assembly constituency is one of the 243 assembly seats in Bihar and is part of the Paschim Champaran parliamentary constituency. It is a General category seat located in West Champaran district and is one of six assembly segments of the parliamentary seat.

A poll of polls released on Tuesday suggested that the NDA is likely to return to power with around 148 seats. The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan is projected to win about 88 seats, while other parties may secure roughly 7 seats. People’s Pulse estimated 133–159 seats for the NDA, 75–101 for the Mahagathbandhan, 0–5 for Jan Suraaj, and 2–8 for others. Bettiah has seen a competitive rivalry between BJP and INC over the years. NEW DELHI: Highlighting the anguish of those who have to face undue harassment at the hands of police, the Supreme Court has said a police officer who abuses his position must be dealt with sternly, and presumptions and standards applicable to an accused-layperson would not apply to them. It cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to three Maharashtra police officers who had allegedly harassed a family, including a minor girl, following a search on a train. “When law enforcers turn extortionists, the citizen looks askance and is left in a dilemma. To confront is to invite instant retaliation and the option is only to succumb meekly to the uniformed authority, even when there is patent abuse,” a bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and K Vinod Chandran said. The Bombay HC had granted anticipatory bail to thecops who allegedly harassed and extracted money from the family after a gold bar was found in their baggage. Quashing the order, the bench said the HC “threw to the winds the caution expressed by this court” in State of Jharkhand vs Sandeep Kumar in which abuse of authority had come up for consideration. “This court held that in every case of anticipatory bail the factors which ought to weigh with courts are the gravity of offence, probity of evidence, antecedents of accused, possibilities of flight, tampering with evidence, influencing witnesses, the impact on society and any aspect peculiar to the case or the accused. PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday described Nepal as India’s priority partner under its “neighbourhood first policy” as he met its governing Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chairman Rabi Lamichhane.This is RSP’s first high-level visit to India since coming to office. Modi said, “Nepal is a priority partner under our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and we look forward to collaborating with the new govt…” Lamichhane has met home minister Amit Shah and EAM S Jaishankar, besides BJP president Nitin Nabin and is also expected to visit Ayodhya. Nepal foreign minister Shisir Khanal is also likely to visit India on June 6 for talks with Jaishankar. This will be the first ministerial visit by either side since the formation of the new govt in Nepal headed by Balendra Shah. NEW DELHI: Several Union ministers on Wednesday carpooled to attend the cabinet meeting held at Seva Teerth as they chose to forgo separate vehicles and convoy to reach the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).This came a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked why ministers can’t opt for carpooling while going for common meetings while stressing the need to reduce their vehicle fleet, which TOI had reported on Thursday.Among those who shared rides to reach the PMO were Nitin Gadkari and J P Nadda who travelled in one car, while C R Paatil travelled with Shivraj Singh Chouhan and G Kishan Reddy. Similarly, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Mansukh Mandaviya travelled in a car from Rail Bhawan. Three other ministers — Kiren Rijiju, Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh and Manohar Lal — came to the Cabinet meeting in one car, while Prahlad Joshi and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat travelled together to the meeting venue.This is being viewed as a part of govt’s broader emphasis and message to people for sustainability and leading by example amid global energy concerns linked to tensions in West Asia. Earlier following the PM’s appeal, several Union ministers and chief ministers have reduced the number of vehicles accompanying them. NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday recommended an ordinance to ease tax rules for foreign investors in some categories of securities.The details of the proposal moved by the finance ministry were not immediately available. However, it is being seen as an effort to help strengthen the rupee, which has weakened 6% against the US dollar as foreign portfolio investors have pulled out a record Rs 2.6 lakh crore from equities since Jan.The move is likely part of a coordinated action with Reserve Bank of India, which is expected to announce measures on Friday following the monetary policy committee meeting that began on Wednesday.Govt has been seeking to address concerns of various sectors, through measures such as a govt-guaranteed credit line for businesses and a package for exporters, apart from adjustments in duties, including fuel, to insulate the economy from the impact of the West Asia war.But the slide of the rupee and the constant FPI withdrawal from the market has been an area of concern.In the run-up to the Union budget, representatives of FPIs had sought tax changes, including a review of the capital gains tax regime for listed securities, and argued against levy of capital gains tax and securities transaction tax.
