Assam HSLC 2026: Failed students must rejoin Class 10 before reappearing for Board exams, says ASSEB
Students who did not clear the Assam High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination 2026 will have to return to regular Class 10 studies before becoming eligible to sit for the board examination again. The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), Division-I, has made re-admission to Class 10 mandatory for unsuccessful candidates, introducing a structured pathway for those planning to make another attempt. The directive was issued through an official notification released by the board on June 23, 2026.
Re-admission made mandatory for failed candidates
Under the revised instructions, students who failed the HSLC Examination 2026 cannot directly register for the next board examination. Instead, they must first secure re-admission to Class 10 and attend regular classes before becoming eligible to appear in subsequent HSLC examinations.The move is aimed at ensuring that students receive continued academic instruction rather than preparing independently without classroom engagement.
Students can return to their existing school
The notification states that unsuccessful candidates may seek re-admission to the same school from which they appeared for the HSLC Examination 2026.However, recognising that some schools may be unable to accommodate returning students, the board has also provided an alternative. In such cases, students may enrol in another school operating under the same examination centre from which they had originally appeared for the HSLC examination.This provision is intended to ensure that no student is denied an opportunity to continue their studies because of institutional constraints.
Registration number to remain unchanged
ASSEB has also clarified that students rejoining Class 10 will not be assigned a fresh registration number. Instead, they will retain the registration number originally issued to them and must use the same registration details while appearing in future HSLC examinations. The measure is expected to maintain continuity in student records and examination documentation.
Option to change elective subject
The board has provided flexibility for re-admitted students by allowing them to change their elective subject after rejoining Class 10.However, this option will remain available only until the half-yearly examination. Once the half-yearly examination is conducted, requests for changing the elective subject will no longer be accepted.Students planning to opt for a different elective have therefore been advised to complete the process well before the prescribed deadline.

With the latest notification, ASSEB has laid down a clear academic framework for students seeking another opportunity after failing the HSLC Examination 2026. The board’s directions outline the admission process, continuation of registration records, and subject-change provisions, while making classroom re-engagement an essential requirement before candidates can reappear in future board examinations.
