Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi in parliament NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah and leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi exchanged sharp remarks in Parliament on Friday during the debate on the women’s reservation bill, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also drawing references from them.Rahul Gandhi, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, praised his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying, “Yesterday I saw my sister achieve something in five minutes that I have not been able to do in 20 years of my political career.”He further said the moment was about “making Union home minister Amit Shah smile”, referring to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s ‘Chanakya’ remark in the House a day before.On Thursday, Shah was seen smiling after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a veiled swipe at him, saying that the BJP’s political strategy was so sharp that even ancient strategist Chanakya would be surprised.Speaking later on Friday, Amit Shah targeted Rahul Gandhi and said, “He should learn from his sister Priyanka how to speak in Parliament,” in a reaction to Rahul’s earlier ‘magician’ remark directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”The magician of Balakot, demonetisation, Sindoor has been suddenly caught…everybody knows there is a partnership between the magician and the businessman,” Rahul Gandhi had said, drawing strong protests from the goverment MPs.The special session of Parliament on the constitutional amendment bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority on Friday. Pony-wallah Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who grabbed a terrorist’s rifle barrel to save tourists during the horrific massacre in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley last year, came to embody Kashmir’s spirit and India’s soul in his final act of selflessness.Adil was the sole breadwinner of his family when he was killed on April 22, 2025. In the past year, his family has lived through a stark and complex transformation — from a life defined by daily uncertainty and frugal living to one of relative financial stability, even as they grapple with irreplaceable loss.Once living in a fragile 40-year-old house of mud and wood, they are waiting to move into a newly constructed one-storey home adjoining the old structure. Costing around Rs 10-Rs 12 lakh, the house was funded by Maharashtra deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde’s party. The family says Shinde is expected to visit them on the first anniversary of the attack, after which they plan to shift into the new residence.In addition, the family has received around Rs 20 lakh in financial assistance from govt sources and other organisations. Even Adil’s widow, Nazim, has been given a permanent job in the fisheries department, while his brother Nazakat has secured a daily-wage job with the Waqf Board. Another brother, Naushad, who once drove taxis, now owns a cab worth around Rs 12 lakh.“We have no dearth of money now, but we miss Adil,” his father, Syed Haider Shah, said. “My son would earn around Rs 300-600 a day and we were happy with it,” he said. “He sacrificed his life for humanity. Tourists trusted us when they came to Pahalgam, and he tried to save them,” he said.Sitting outside the newly built house, Haider says he feels a sense of pride when people from across the country visit and acknowledge his son’s courage. “He lost his life, but he made ours more secure,” he said.Haidar says he is aware that opinions about his son differ within Kashmir and beyond. Haider, who is fluent in Pahari, Kashmiri and Urdu, says people from across the country continue to visit the family to offer condolences. “People in the Valley value what he did by saving tourists and giving his life for their safety,” he says. “But those from outside Jammu and Kashmir perhaps understand his sacrifice more deeply. They see that he did not think on religious lines and gave his life for others.”He pointed out that there were scores of people present in Baisaran that day who managed to escape. “My son could also have saved himself. But he didn’t. His conscience didn’t allow it and I am proud of it,” he says.The memories flood in. “He had injuries on his fingers because he had tried to snatch a rifle. Then he was shot in the back,” he says.“That day was the heaviest day of our lives. Woh qayamat ka din tha,” he says, almost in a whisper. “When I heard there was firing in Baisaran, I started calling him. He didn’t answer. As there is no network there, I thought he would answer. I kept calling till around 4 or 4.30 pm. At 6pm, when there was still no response, I went to Ashmuqam police station and told them my son was missing. They asked me to go home.”He falls silent for a while; then, with a deep sigh, he says: “When I reached home, I was informed by police that my son’s body was in Pahalgam hospital…” Haidar stops there, his eyes filled with tears.When the family reached Srinagar hospital to collect Adil’s body, a female tourist who had lost a family member said Adil had tried his best to save them by snatching a gun from the terrorists. NK Premachandran, Sandosh Kumar, Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: A triumphant opposition hailed the fall of the constitutional amendment bill as a defeat for delimitation, and not women’s reservation.After the opposition prevailed in voting, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke with TMC heir apparent and MP Abhishek Banerjee and thanked him for the support. There was concern that only a few of the 28 TMC MPs may turn up in Parliament because of the election campaign in Bengal. But TMC sent 21 MPs after repeated requests from INDIA bloc leaders who impressed upon Mamata Banerjee that presence in debate and voting was important to thwart the Modi govt’s plan on delimitation. According to sources, Banerjee told Rahul, “The tide is turning against the BJP”.Akhilesh Yadav called it a defeat of BJP’s malice.RSP’s N K Premachandran said the bill’s failure to pass shows that BJP must consult with the opposition on important issues concerning the nation. “This defeat is not of women’s quota, but of delimitation by the backdoor,” he said.Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused PM Narendra Modi of maliciously linking the women’s quota to delimitation based on 2011 Census. “But his hollow attempt to pose as messiah of women has failed today,” she remarked. Priyanka said if the three bills had passed in Parliament, democracy in India would not have survived.Rahul Gandhi said, “They used an unconstitutional trick in the name of women to break the Constitution.” Congress whip Manickam Tagore said, “We have defeated arrogance.”CPI MP Sandosh Kumar said the fall of the govt legislation shows that there is a strong opposition to any attempt to change the balance of representation in the country. He said the women of the country must see through the BJP’s approach of delaying women’s quota by linking it to census and delimitation. “This defeat is similar to what we saw during the farmers’ movement, when people’s unity forced the govt to repeal the farm laws.”DMK chief M K Stalin, who led the protests in Tamil Nadu, said his party’s concern was about delimitation, “which requires careful thought to ensure it is fair, especially for southern states”. NK Premachandran, Sandosh Kumar, Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: A triumphant opposition hailed the fall of the constitutional amendment bill as a defeat for delimitation, and not women’s reservation.After the opposition prevailed in voting, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke with TMC heir apparent and MP Abhishek Banerjee and thanked him for the support. There was concern that only a few of the 28 TMC MPs may turn up in Parliament because of the election campaign in Bengal. But TMC sent 21 MPs after repeated requests from INDIA bloc leaders who impressed upon Mamata Banerjee that presence in debate and voting was important to thwart the Modi govt’s plan on delimitation. According to sources, Banerjee told Rahul, “The tide is turning against the BJP”.Akhilesh Yadav called it a defeat of BJP’s malice.RSP’s N K Premachandran said the bill’s failure to pass shows that BJP must consult with the opposition on important issues concerning the nation. “This defeat is not of women’s quota, but of delimitation by the backdoor,” he said.Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused PM Narendra Modi of maliciously linking the women’s quota to delimitation based on 2011 Census. “But his hollow attempt to pose as messiah of women has failed today,” she remarked. Priyanka said if the three bills had passed in Parliament, democracy in India would not have survived.Rahul Gandhi said, “They used an unconstitutional trick in the name of women to break the Constitution.” Congress whip Manickam Tagore said, “We have defeated arrogance.”CPI MP Sandosh Kumar said the fall of the govt legislation shows that there is a strong opposition to any attempt to change the balance of representation in the country. He said the women of the country must see through the BJP’s approach of delaying women’s quota by linking it to census and delimitation. “This defeat is similar to what we saw during the farmers’ movement, when people’s unity forced the govt to repeal the farm laws.”DMK chief M K Stalin, who led the protests in Tamil Nadu, said his party’s concern was about delimitation, “which requires careful thought to ensure it is fair, especially for southern states”. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Friday hailed the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, calling it a victory for the state.The DMK and its allies have been vocal in opposing the delimitation bill, arguing that it would weaken the voice of southern states.In a post on X, Stalin said, “Tamil Nadu has defeated Delhi! On 23 April, we shall together vanquish Delhi’s arrogance—and the slaves who abet that arrogance!”Separately, Stalin also said, “The bill that came against Tamil Nadu has been defeated in Parliament is the news we got now. This victory is just a trailer. Next coming election is going to come. I’ve said it’s Tamil Nadu vs Delhi. We are going to win in more than 200 seats. Let us work continuously and win,” as quoted by ANI.In another post, Stalin reiterated that Tamil Nadu was not against delimitation but sought a fair and consultative process. “”TN fought. TN won. Delimitation is about representation, about who gets a voice in India’s democracy. It must strengthen the Union, not weaken its balance. Guided by Periyar, inspired by Anna, and strengthened by Kalaignar, Tamil Nadu has always stood for justice, dignity, and federalism,” Stalin said.”We never opposed delimitation. We asked for fairness, for a process that is consulted, thought through, and agreed upon. Not one pushed through for political gain. This is our resolve: every time Tamil Nadu’s rights are challenged, every time its identity or culture is questioned, and every time the federal spirit of India is tested, Tamil Nadu will rise united and unwavering,” he added.The Constitution Amendment Bill, which aimed at implementing Women’s Reservation from the 2029 general elections, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. For such a bill to be approved, it requires the support of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting.During the division after the debate, 298 members voted in favour of the bill, while 230 opposed it.
