Left out of that lineup, though, was ‘3 Idiots’, one of the most successful and beloved films of his career. Now, reports suggest Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster will return to theatres on September 4, 2026, as part of NH Studioz’s plans following its major acquisition of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films catalogue.

Nearly 17 years after its original theatrical run, this re-release offers audiences another shot at experiencing the coming-of-age drama on the big screen. According to Bollywood Hungama, as part of its strategic plans, N H Studioz is set to bring back the iconic blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ to cinemas with a grand re-release on September 4, 2026, giving audiences an opportunity to experience one of Indian cinema’s most beloved films on the big screen once again.The film, led by Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani, remains one of the standout milestones in the history of modern Hindi cinema.
Aamir Khan’s Rancho linked to Sonam Wangchuk row
This month, Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’ has already found itself back in the news, over its alleged link to Sonam Wangchuk and his ongoing hunger strike related to the NEET-UG paper leak row. For years, many viewers have held the belief that Aamir’s character, Phunsukh Wangdu, popularly known as Rancho, drew inspiration from Wangchuk’s real-life efforts as an education reformer in Ladakh. That theory gained fresh momentum after Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur alongside Aamir in the film, posted a video supporting Sonam Wangchuk and asserting that Rancho was indeed modeled on him.Aamir eventually broke his silence on the matter during a Q&A session at the British Film Institute (BFI), putting the theory to rest. “I didn’t know about Mr Sonam at that time when we were doing the film. I saw a video of Chatur just recently, and he said that. But he is wrong,” he clarified, further noting that neither director Rajkumar Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi had any knowledge of Wangchuk while the script was being developed. The actor went beyond just denying the link, however, also touching on Wangchuk’s wellbeing, who was 19 days into his fast at that point. “All of us are very concerned for his health and his life. We hope it ends well. All of us are hoping that he ends his fast,” he added.
