About 51,000 battery packs used inside reclining chairs are being recalled after reports of overheating, smoking and igniting; the packs were sold on Amazon for about $105 for more than three years
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled approximately 51,000 lithium-ion battery packs used in reclining chairs after reports of the batteries overheating and catching fire. The recalled product is Blue Cactus Company’s 2,500 mAh battery pack (model RWX-RBP02), which was sold on Amazon from May 2023 through July 2026.The agency said it received four reports of the batteries overheating, smoking or igniting. Though there are only a small number of reported cases, lithium-ion batteries still carry dangers when they fail. They can ignite suddenly and are difficult to extinguish once they start burning. The recall announcement was made on Thursday (September 24).
How to identify the recalled battery
The recalled products are black battery packs with ‘The Blue Cactus Company’ branding and logo printed on the front. The recalled product bears the model number RWX-RBP02 on the rear. These batteries were designed to power various reclining chair brands, meaning they may have been sold alongside different manufacturers’ furniture or as replacement parts.If you purchased a reclining chair battery pack from Amazon between May 2023 and July 2026 for around $105, it is important that you check the battery against the model number. The product is fairly distinctive: it comes with a black casing, and the branding is unmistakable. Look for the model number to know whether your battery falls under this recall.
What should you do?
If your recliner has the recalled battery, it is important that you stop using it right away and contact The Blue Cactus Company for a replacement. The company said it is offering free replacements for the recalled product. You may need to reference your purchase receipt or product information when reaching out.In the meantime, remove the battery pack from your reclining chair and store it away from living areas, ideally in a cool, dry place away from other flammable materials.“Do not throw this recalled lithium-ion battery or device in the trash, the general recycling stream (e.g., street-level or kerbside recycling bins), or in used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores,” the CPSC said.The agency urged that the recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently from other batteries, as they present a greater risk of fire. “Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection centre may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery or device for disposal. Before taking your battery or device to a HHW collection centre, contact it ahead of time and ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for further guidance,” the agency added.The recalled battery packs were imported by Go North Rocket 28 AB, a company based in Sweden. They were sold exclusively through Amazon during the three-year window. You can contact the manufacturer directly or work through Amazon customer service if you still have your order history.If you have the recalled batteries, the safest approach is to treat them as a potential hazard until you have obtained a replacement. Check your Amazon order history if you cannot recall whether you own one of these packs. The model number RWX-RBP02 is the specific identifier to verify. If you find one in your home, do not use it, and begin the process of getting it replaced and properly disposed of.
