A 29-year-old Russian tourist was found dead inside a homestay in Kasol, a popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday, prompting a police investigation.The woman had travelled to Kasol and was staying at the homestay with a friend.The region is a well-known destination among Israeli, Russian and Ukrainian travellers.Post-mortem orderedAccording to police, the friend found her unconscious in the washroom and sought help, but she died before medical assistance could arrive.After local panchayat representatives alerted authorities, a police team from Manikaran reached the homestay.The body has been sent to the regional hospital in Kullu for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, PTI reported.“The autopsy report will reveal whether she died due to medical complications or any other cause. Rajya Sabha NEW DELHI: The BJP-led NDA has moved closer to consolidating its position in the Rajya Sabha after winning 19 of the 26 seats decided in the latest round of elections. The Congress-led INDIA bloc secured six seats, while Mizoram’s Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won one.The latest results have taken the NDA’s strength in the Rajya Sabha to 150 members, up from 148 earlier. Of these, 19 belonged to the NDA and five to the Congress-led opposition.How the numbers stack upThe latest elections have strengthened the NDA’s position in the Rajya Sabha at a time when several opposition parties are facing internal turmoil.According to PTI sources, the resignation of three Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MPs, after major rupture in Mamata Banerjee’s party, has opened the door for the NDA to make further gains. If the ruling NDA alliance wins all three resulting bypolls in West Bengal, its tally will rise from 150 to 153, leaving it just 10 seats short of the two-thirds mark.Weeks ago, the NDA’s strength in the Rajya Sabha received a major boost after a split in the AAP, with Raghav Chadha leading a rebellion against Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership and bringing seven Upper House MPs into the NDA fold.These developments have reduced the effective strength of the INDIA bloc in the Upper House. The opposition alliance currently has around 64 MPs, while several regional parties continue to hold the balance of power.However, the NDA’s path to a two-thirds majority is not guaranteed. Later this year, the terms of 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh will end, and the Samajwadi Party could gain seats because of its improved strength in the state assembly.Regional parties such as YSRCP and BJD, with seven and six MPs respectively, could also play a key role in future voting on major legislation.For the NDA, the immediate focus remains the Rajya Sabha. Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran addresses a gathering in IIT Madras (Image/ANI) NEW DELHI: Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran has cautioned that the world is entering a turbulent two-decade cycle echoing the geopolitical upheaval of the early 20th century, even as he insisted that the public heavily underestimates India’s underlying strength and dismissed fears of AI-driven job losses as overstated.Speaking on the Professor Mahesh Podcast, an IITM Global initiative at IIT-Madras, the CEA said the global order faces severe flux between 2026 and 2046. “The next 20 years will mimic to some extent the period between 1925 and 1945,” he warned, urging corporations to shift from “just-in-time” efficiency to “just-in-case” resilience as nations increasingly weaponise supply chains and financial systems. He stressed that, in this environment, businesses worldwide would increasingly prioritise security and self-reliance over the pursuit of the lowest possible cost.Nageswaran argued that India is far better placed than commonly believed. He noted that the country is among only two or three nations capable of simultaneously growing its own food, launching its own satellites, and manufacturing vital pharmaceuticals such as paracetamol and antibiotics — a baseline strength he said is routinely overlooked.Elaborating on AI, he contended that the technology would increase the cognitive load on humans rather than replace them, adding that students must master prompt composition because the quality of outputs depends on the quality of inputs. He flagged trade skills — electrical work, mechanical maintenance and plumbing — as opportunities relatively insulated from AI disruption.Describing the country as a “living economics laboratory” unmatched anywhere on Earth, Nageswaran evoked an observation attributed to economist Joan Robinson. “Whatever you say about India, the opposite can be equally true,” he said, pointing to the paradox of a nation undertaking massive socio-economic transformation within a vibrant democracy before attaining full prosperity.The CEA also pushed back against frequently cited international data on India’s informal sector, arguing that reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax had accelerated formalisation of MSMEs. Citing internal assessments, he said the economy was now roughly 65% formalised.Turning to education, Nageswaran urged institutions to embrace interdisciplinary learning. CM Yogi flags ‘double standards’ of Opposition as Ram Mandir SIT probe widens NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday accused the opposition of displaying ‘double standards’ over the controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in Ram Mandir donations, saying parties that had once opposed the temple’s construction were now claiming to be concerned about the interests of Ram devotees.His remarks came amid a political row over allegations of misappropriation of donation funds at the Ram Mandir, with opposition leaders demanding a probe and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Sudhakar Singh serving a legal notice on the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust seeking detailed disclosures on donations and expenditure.Addressing a public gathering in Rudauli, Ayodhya, CM Yogi said, “Look at their double standards. The same Congress party that tried every possible way to prevent the construction of Lord Ram’s temple in Ayodhya is now pretending to be deeply concerned about Ayodhya. They used all their strength against it and, with great shamelessness, even submitted affidavits in the Supreme Court claiming that Lord Ram never existed.””And today, that same Congress is acting restless over Ayodhya and claiming that Ram devotees have been insulted. And look at the Samajwadi Party and its double standards as well. Today they claim Ram devotees have been insulted, but these are the same people who ordered firing on kar sevaks and used batons against those chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Now they have come forward to preach to others,” he added.”Those who fired bullets at ‘karsevaks’ and wielded lathis for chanting Jai Shri Ram are now out here giving sermons… We have set up an SIT investigation (to probe Ram Temple donation issue) at the request of the Trust. The SIT probe will make everything crystal clear. I will tell everyone that nothing should be said that hurts the sentiments of Lord Ram devotees. If anyone has any evidence, they should present it to the SIT,” he said.The chief minister also appealed to devotees not to make inflammatory statements and said the state government had already ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter at the request of the temple trust.”I would like to appeal to all Ram devotees. Regarding the reports that have emerged from Ayodhya, we have constituted an SIT investigation at the request of the trust. I can assure you that the SIT inquiry will bring out the complete truth without any doubt,” UP CM said.”At the same time, I urge all sides not to make any inflammatory remarks or statements that hurt the sentiments of Ram devotees. If anyone has documentary evidence, they should submit it to the SIT,” he added.The SIT was constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government after the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust sought a formal investigation into allegations that funds donated to the temple had been misused. The trust has denied any wrongdoing and said regular audits were being conducted.The three-member panel comprises Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, inspector general of police Kiran S and special secretary (finance) Neel Ratan. The team has been tasked with examining the allegations and submitting its report to the state government.The controversy began after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav referred to reports alleging that crores of rupees donated to the Ram temple were unaccounted for and called for an impartial investigation. Former SP MLA Pawan Pandey had alleged that between Rs 7 crore and Rs 7.5 crore in donations had been misappropriated.The issue gained further political attention after RJD MP Sudhakar Singh sent a legal notice to the temple trust demanding a year-wise account of donations and expenditure from 2021-22 to 2025-26, along with audited balance sheets, details of bank accounts and records of land purchases.Temple trust general secretary Champat Rai has rejected the allegations and maintained that no evidence of financial irregularities has surfaced so far.Get the latest India news and live updates.
