. DARJEELING: Prashant Tamang (43), a singer from Darjeeling, died of cardiac arrest at his Delhi home on Sunday. Prashant felt unwell around 6am. His family took him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He had been living in Delhi’s Janakpuri with his wife Geeta Thapa and their three-year-old daughter, Ariah Tamang. Following his father’s death in an accident, Prashant took his place in Kolkata police as a constable. Due to his musical skills, he joined the orchestra of the city police. “He had gone to Dubai for a show and returned on Dec 27. He travelled to Arunachal Pradesh on Jan 7 for another show and was back in Delhi the next day. We spoke over a video call that day. He sent me videos of his show and appeared to be in good health,” said sister Anupama Gurung. Anupama said the family would bring the body back to Darjeeling for last rites. Then, when all hope seems lost, years of perseverance finally pay off and the coveted appointment letter arrives.The financial hardship and personal struggles often portrayed in such stories are only part of the reason government jobs remain so appealing. Their enduring attraction stems from a range of factors, including:Social status: Government jobs continue to command considerable respect across much of India. Securing one is viewed as a mark of achievement and professional success.Family tradition: In many families, children follow in the footsteps of parents or relatives who have worked in government service. Familiarity with the profession and its benefits often reinforces its appeal across generations.Financial security and upward mobility: For many candidates from low- and middle-income households, a government job represents a pathway to financial stability and a better quality of life. It can also provide opportunities for upward social and economic mobility.Stable income: Public-sector employees benefit from regular salaries and structured pay scales. This financial predictability allows individuals and families to plan for the future with confidence.Job security: Government jobs are widely perceived as offering greater job security than most private-sector roles. The relatively low risk of layoffs makes them particularly attractive during periods of economic uncertainty.Pension and retirement benefits: Government employment often comes with retirement benefits that provide long-term financial security. Such safeguards remain a major draw for many aspirants.Public service: For some aspirants, the attraction lies in the opportunity to serve society and contribute to public welfare. The ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives is a significant draw.Taken together, these factors help explain why government jobs continue to hold a unique place in India’s collective imagination.Why aspirants keep tryingCracking a government recruitment exam is no easy feat. While many candidates are successful in their first attempt, others spend years preparing and reappearing, continuing until they either secure a position, exhaust their permitted attempts, or cross the age limit for eligibility.So, beyond the appeal of government jobs, what explains the persistence of aspirants who continue to burn the midnight oil despite repeated setbacks and long odds?UPSC aspirant Rahul Singh (name changed) told The Times of India that candidates do not give up on their dreams easily.”Most of the exams in India have selection rates similar to UPSC. For examples, for IIT, its less than 1%, and for SSC CGL, it is far less than both UPSC CSE and IIT. Therefore, the odds of getting selected in UPSC is not an outlier in comparison to other competitive exams,” he said.From aspirant to civil servantSingh says what keeps him motivated is the fruits of his labour that come with success, and the opportunity to work among common people and bring change to their lives.He also sought to clarify a misconception that aspirants are motivated by the opportunity to make money unscrupulously once in positions of power, or to exploit political opportunities when they arise.”It might be true in some cases but but it cannot be generalised for lakhs of dedicated aspirants. I feel that a sense of selfless service, compassion and integrity still exists which is keeping the spine of ‘steel frame of India’ intact and which is driving this country towards path of progess despite all the negatives,” Singh said.Scale of competition – what statistics sayAs the world’s most populous country, India naturally also has the largest youth population. As of 2025, nearly 65% of Indians are below the age of 35. This translates into a vast pool of job seekers, making government recruitment one of the most competitive landscapes in the country.For example, applications for the UPSC CSE run into the millions each year. In the 2022 UPSC CSE, more than 11.35 lakh candidates applied for 1,011 vacancies, translating to an average of 1,123 applications for every position. Ultimately, only 933 candidates were recommended for selection after the interview stage, resulting in a success rate of just 0.08%.Similarly, 10.40 lakh candidates applied for 796 vacancies in the 2020 Civil Services Examination, translating to an average of 1,306 applications per position. In the end, only 761 candidates were recommended for selection, a success rate of just 0.07%.Millions aspire, only a few succeedThe situation is similar for state-level government jobs. In the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services (UPPSC) examination, 5,76,154 candidates registered for 947 vacancies in 2024, translating to an average of 608 registrations for every post. Ultimately, only 932 candidates were recommended for selection, resulting in a success rate of just 0.16%.UPSC and other govt job examsThe numbers highlight a simple reality: Only a tiny fraction ultimately make the cut.India’s government job paradox – why many fail to make the cutThe reasons millions of aspirants fail to make the cut extend well beyond the sheer number of applicants. Factors such as intense competition, exam difficulty, exam-related pressures, reservation policies, and even examination irregularities can all shape a candidate’s chances of success.Competition level: There is intense competition even within a vast pool of aspirants. So even strong candidates are often edged out by someone slightly better.Paper difficulty: Questions are often intentionally set at a high level to filter candidates and ensure that only the most well-prepared qualify.Paper leak: Paper leaks lead to re-tests, where even strong performers from the original exam may not replicate their earlier results due to changed conditions and added pressure.Reservation policies: These shape government recruitment by distributing vacancies across categories, leading to differences in competition levels and cut-off marks. Individual preparedness: Many candidates take their first attempt primarily to understand the exam level and competition. In other cases, even well-prepared candidates may find themselves outperformed by others who are significantly better prepared.Preparation ecosystem: Individual preparedness, in turn, can be shaped by varying access to guidance, study resources, and exposure to competitive environments.Selection, in the end, is a matter of relative performance within fixed constraints—and sometimes luck—where even strong effort does not always guarantee success.Government jobs: A complex realityDespite intense competition and the sheer pool of candidates, the dream of a government job continues to endure, shaping aspirations across the country.For the 2026 Civil Services Examination, UPSC received 8,19,372 applications for just 933 posts, reflecting the continued aspiration among millions to secure a government job.From the Prelims stage, 13,343 have qualified for the Mains stage, where an even smaller number will qualify for the interviews. Their enduring attraction stems from a range of factors, including:Social status: Government jobs continue to command considerable respect across much of India. Securing one is viewed as a mark of achievement and professional success.Family tradition: In many families, children follow in the footsteps of parents or relatives who have worked in government service. Familiarity with the profession and its benefits often reinforces its appeal across generations.Financial security and upward mobility: For many candidates from low- and middle-income households, a government job represents a pathway to financial stability and a better quality of life. It can also provide opportunities for upward social and economic mobility.Stable income: Public-sector employees benefit from regular salaries and structured pay scales. This financial predictability allows individuals and families to plan for the future with confidence.Job security: Government jobs are widely perceived as offering greater job security than most private-sector roles. The relatively low risk of layoffs makes them particularly attractive during periods of economic uncertainty.Pension and retirement benefits: Government employment often comes with retirement benefits that provide long-term financial security. Such safeguards remain a major draw for many aspirants.Public service: For some aspirants, the attraction lies in the opportunity to serve society and contribute to public welfare. The ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives is a significant draw.Taken together, these factors help explain why government jobs continue to hold a unique place in India’s collective imagination.Why aspirants keep tryingCracking a government recruitment exam is no easy feat. While many candidates are successful in their first attempt, others spend years preparing and reappearing, continuing until they either secure a position, exhaust their permitted attempts, or cross the age limit for eligibility.So, beyond the appeal of government jobs, what explains the persistence of aspirants who continue to burn the midnight oil despite repeated setbacks and long odds?UPSC aspirant Rahul Singh (name changed) told The Times of India that candidates do not give up on their dreams easily.”Most of the exams in India have selection rates similar to UPSC. For examples, for IIT, its less than 1%, and for SSC CGL, it is far less than both UPSC CSE and IIT. Therefore, the odds of getting selected in UPSC is not an outlier in comparison to other competitive exams,” he said.From aspirant to civil servantSingh says what keeps him motivated is the fruits of his labour that come with success, and the opportunity to work among common people and bring change to their lives.He also sought to clarify a misconception that aspirants are motivated by the opportunity to make money unscrupulously once in positions of power, or to exploit political opportunities when they arise.”It might be true in some cases but but it cannot be generalised for lakhs of dedicated aspirants. I feel that a sense of selfless service, compassion and integrity still exists which is keeping the spine of ‘steel frame of India’ intact and which is driving this country towards path of progess despite all the negatives,” Singh said.Scale of competition – what statistics sayAs the world’s most populous country, India naturally also has the largest youth population. As of 2025, nearly 65% of Indians are below the age of 35. This translates into a vast pool of job seekers, making government recruitment one of the most competitive landscapes in the country.For example, applications for the UPSC CSE run into the millions each year. In the 2022 UPSC CSE, more than 11.35 lakh candidates applied for 1,011 vacancies, translating to an average of 1,123 applications for every position. Ultimately, only 933 candidates were recommended for selection after the interview stage, resulting in a success rate of just 0.08%.Similarly, 10.40 lakh candidates applied for 796 vacancies in the 2020 Civil Services Examination, translating to an average of 1,306 applications per position. In the end, only 761 candidates were recommended for selection, a success rate of just 0.07%.Millions aspire, only a few succeedThe situation is similar for state-level government jobs. In the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services (UPPSC) examination, 5,76,154 candidates registered for 947 vacancies in 2024, translating to an average of 608 registrations for every post. Ultimately, only 932 candidates were recommended for selection, resulting in a success rate of just 0.16%.UPSC and other govt job examsThe numbers highlight a simple reality: Only a tiny fraction ultimately make the cut.India’s government job paradox – why many fail to make the cutThe reasons millions of aspirants fail to make the cut extend well beyond the sheer number of applicants. Factors such as intense competition, exam difficulty, exam-related pressures, reservation policies, and even examination irregularities can all shape a candidate’s chances of success.Competition level: There is intense competition even within a vast pool of aspirants. So even strong candidates are often edged out by someone slightly better.Paper difficulty: Questions are often intentionally set at a high level to filter candidates and ensure that only the most well-prepared qualify.Paper leak: Paper leaks lead to re-tests, where even strong performers from the original exam may not replicate their earlier results due to changed conditions and added pressure.Reservation policies: These shape government recruitment by distributing vacancies across categories, leading to differences in competition levels and cut-off marks. Individual preparedness: Many candidates take their first attempt primarily to understand the exam level and competition. In other cases, even well-prepared candidates may find themselves outperformed by others who are significantly better prepared.Preparation ecosystem: Individual preparedness, in turn, can be shaped by varying access to guidance, study resources, and exposure to competitive environments.Selection, in the end, is a matter of relative performance within fixed constraints—and sometimes luck—where even strong effort does not always guarantee success.Government jobs: A complex realityDespite intense competition and the sheer pool of candidates, the dream of a government job continues to endure, shaping aspirations across the country.For the 2026 Civil Services Examination, UPSC received 8,19,372 applications for just 933 posts, reflecting the continued aspiration among millions to secure a government job.From the Prelims stage, 13,343 have qualified for the Mains stage, where an even smaller number will qualify for the interviews. NEW DELHI: Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), is all set to do a Bihar in Uttar Pradesh.Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are nearly 8-9 months away and all key stakeholders are busy firming up their strategies for the high-stakes contest. But the AIMIM president is already in action mode with a tried and tested strategy that can put some opposition parties in a Catch-22 situation.Owaisi on Sunday held a rally in UP’s Bahraich, a strategically chosen district, to not just launch his party’s UP campaign but also to throw a now-familiar challenge to the opposition parties: “We are ready to join hands with you to prevent the BJP from returning to power provided we are treated with respect and accorded equal status within that alliance.”While on the one hand Owaisi reached out to the opposition parties, on the other he threw an open challenge to the Samajwadi Party by announcing Shaukat Ali as the AIMIM candidate from the Matera assembly constituency in Bahraich. The seat at present is with the SP which is the main opposition player in the state.Now, those who have followed the politics of the AIMIM chief would have a sense of deja vu. He has followed the same template in Bihar and Maharashtra.Let’s rewind and go back to the 2025 Bihar assembly elections.AIMIM’s Bihar PlaybookThe AIMIM added a new and interesting dimension to politics in the run up to the 2025 assembly elections in Bihar. In a first of its kind, they held a protest demanding their party’s inclusion in the opposition’s Mahagathbandhan alliance.The AIMIM workers held a demonstration with drums outside the residence of former CM Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad demanding space in the opposition INDIA bloc to “prevent a split of secular votes”.The unique protest not just made for good optics but also put immense pressure on the INDIA bloc parties – the RJD and the Congress- who eventually did not agree to the AIMIM alliance.The AIMIM contested on 28 seats and won 5 with a vote share of 1.89%, while the INDIA bloc allies were decimated by the NDA.Failed Maharashtra outreachEarlier in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections also, the AIMIM reached out to the opposition Maha Vikas Agadhi for an alliance. The AIMIM state president wrote a letter to MVA members stating they were open to alliance talks. However, the Congress, Shiv Sena and the NCP rejected AIMIM’s outreach.The party eventually contested 16 assembly seats alone but was successful in retaining only one of the two assembly seats it had won in the 2019 polls.UP strategyNow, let’s shift our focus back to Uttar Pradesh.First, let’s discuss Owaisi’s choice of Bahraich for his launch rally. The Matera assembly constituency in Bahraich is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party and not the BJP, which is the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh. If Owaisi wants to defeat the BJP, shouldn’t he be logically targeting the BJP first? But Owaisi chose SP stronghold to launch his campaign because his primary objective is to woo the Muslim voters of the state who have for long backed Akhilesh Yadav’s party.Owaisi’s speech in Matera targeted BJP’s Yogi Adityanath government and Akhilesh Yadav in equal measure.”I am appealing to the people of Uttar Pradesh. Support AIMIM; we would rather die than trade away our honour and your affection,” Owaisi said at the rally.Questioning the development work carried out by elected representatives in the area, Owaisi said, “What have the Samajwadi Party leaders whom you voted for done for the development of the area? They did nothing.”Continuing with his attack on Samajwadi Party, he alleged that despite receiving votes from the public, local representatives had failed to ensure basic facilities and claimed that even a hospital had not been constructed in the area. Owaisi said the youth had become politically aware and urged people to support AIMIM.The second reason why the choice of Bahraich is a strategic decision is because it is a communally sensitive district and has a long-running political and historical contest over the legacy of Maharaja Suheldev and warrior-saint Syed Salar Masood Ghazi.During a recent visit to Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh minister Anil Rajbhar claimed that the dargah of Ghazi was originally a Surya Kund and said he would write to chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey.Anil Rajbhar also accused previous governments of glorifying “invaders” such as Ghazi while neglecting Maharaja Suheldev, who is celebrated among Rajbhars and several other OBC communities as the ruler who defeated Ghazi.Clearly, the issue has a great potential for polarisation and suits the hardline politics of Owaisi.Owaisi’s opposition outreach: A well crafted strategyNow, let’s come to the second part of Owaisi’s tried and tested strategy – a loud and open offer of alliance to the opposition parties.This now seems to have become a part of his election playbook. It is Owaisi’s way of countering the opposition parties who have over the years labelled AIMIM as the B-team of the BJP. The AIMIM outreach not just takes the sting out of the “B-team attack” but also puts the opposition in a Catch 22 situation. The AIMIM chief knows that there will be few takers in the opposition camp for his alliance offer.Why opposition parties spurn Owaisi’s offerSo, why do the opposition parties not accept Owaisi’s offer and ensure that non-BJP votes, especially of the Muslims does not split? Well, this is because the opposition parties know that Owaisi’s offer is like a double-edged sword.First, most of these opposition parties like the RJD in Bihar, Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh have banked heavily on the support of Muslims for their politics. If they accept AIMIM as an ally, they fear that Muslims will back Owaisi and gradually this will weaken their own minorities’ politics.Second, any opposition alliance with AIMIM will give the BJP a very strong weapon to engineer reverse polarisation. Since Owaisi is known for a very aggressive hardline brand of politics on issues concerning the minorities, the opposition will find it difficult to dissociate itself from the AIMIM. And this will give the BJP an opportunity to mobilise the Hindus against the opposition parties and eventually corner them.Clearly, that leaves the opposition parties in a Catch 22 situation. While any AIMIM alliance may help prevent division of minority votes, it may, at the same time, push the majority votes towards the BJP. Owaisi knows this predicament of the opposition parties and hence makes it a point to offer an alliance to them ahead of every election where his presence matters.And when the opposition parties reject his alliance, Owaisi leaves no stone unturned to put them on the mat by accusing them of using Muslims as a vote bank in elections but refusing to share power with them.What should worry the opposition parties, especially the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, is that Uttar Pradesh is unlike Maharashtra and Bihar. There is a fairly strong and independent pole of politics in the state in the form of BSP chief Mayawati. The AIMIM chief knows that there will be few takers in the opposition camp for his alliance offer.Why opposition parties spurn Owaisi’s offerSo, why do the opposition parties not accept Owaisi’s offer and ensure that non-BJP votes, especially of the Muslims does not split? Well, this is because the opposition parties know that Owaisi’s offer is like a double-edged sword.First, most of these opposition parties like the RJD in Bihar, Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh have banked heavily on the support of Muslims for their politics. If they accept AIMIM as an ally, they fear that Muslims will back Owaisi and gradually this will weaken their own minorities’ politics.Second, any opposition alliance with AIMIM will give the BJP a very strong weapon to engineer reverse polarisation. Since Owaisi is known for a very aggressive hardline brand of politics on issues concerning the minorities, the opposition will find it difficult to dissociate itself from the AIMIM. And this will give the BJP an opportunity to mobilise the Hindus against the opposition parties and eventually corner them.Clearly, that leaves the opposition parties in a Catch 22 situation. While any AIMIM alliance may help prevent division of minority votes, it may, at the same time, push the majority votes towards the BJP. Owaisi knows this predicament of the opposition parties and hence makes it a point to offer an alliance to them ahead of every election where his presence matters.And when the opposition parties reject his alliance, Owaisi leaves no stone unturned to put them on the mat by accusing them of using Muslims as a vote bank in elections but refusing to share power with them.What should worry the opposition parties, especially the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, is that Uttar Pradesh is unlike Maharashtra and Bihar. There is a fairly strong and independent pole of politics in the state in the form of BSP chief Mayawati.
