But thanks to dense smog, pervasive in most north Indian cities, and an AQI of 411, visibility is too poor to permit a game of cricket. They should’ve scheduled the game in Thiruvananthapuram, where AQI is about 68 right now!” he wrote.India was scheduled to play the fourth match of the five-T20I series against South Africa at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. However, the toss was repeatedly delayed as thick fog enveloped the venue, forcing umpires to conduct multiple ground inspections through the evening.With visibility failing to improve even after several assessments, match officials eventually called off the game. Both teams remained in their dressing rooms for most of the evening as conditions worsened after sunset. The fifth and final match between the two countries will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.The India Meteorological Department had earlier issued an orange alert for very dense fog in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, with visibility at the stadium severely affected. Heartfelt thanks to the Honourable President Ji for giving this precious time,” he added.However, there is no provision for recalling a legislator in the law.On April 24, the Aam Aadmi Party suffered a jolt when seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs — Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikramjit Sahney and Swati Maliwal — quit and merged with the BJP, alleging that the party had strayed from its principles, values and core morals. Six of the seven MPs who quit AAP were from Punjab.“We have decided that we, two-thirds of members belonging to the AAP in the Rajya Sabha, will exercise the provisions of the Constitution of India and merge with the BJP,” Raghav Chadha said at a press conference.The fallout followed weeks of escalating tensions between Chadha and the party leadership. Earlier this month, he was removed as AAP’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha and accused by senior leaders of engaging in “soft PR” instead of aggressively taking on the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.His growing distance from the party had become evident over the past year as Chadha was abroad when Kejriwal was arrested in the excise policy case in March 2024 and remained away during his nearly six-month incarceration.Senior party leaders also alleged that Chadha had been reluctant to raise issues aligned with AAP’s political stand. Hospital wall collapse in Bengaluru Seven people, including a girl who had gone shopping for her seventh birthday on May 3, were killed and nine injured after a wall of Bowring Hospital in Shivajinagar collapsed on them during thunderstorms here on Wednesday evening. This is the first major rain-related tragedy in the tech capital in the past two decades. The victims included two women from Kerala who were visiting Bengaluru. They had taken shelter along the compound wall to escape the sudden downpour when the structure gave way. According to cops, many of the deceased and injured were street vendors who sold wares along the wall.Siddaramiah promises probe, action against officialsThe deceased have been identified as Fayaz Ahmed, 39, footwear vendor; Mohammed Abdul Haq, 52, cloth seller; Musfira, 6; KK Latha, 57, and Smita, 47, from Kerala; Mohammed Salauddin, 36, vendor from UP; and Naseemullah, 19, from Assam, who was making car stickers.CM Siddaramaiah, who visited the site of the incident, promised thorough investigations and action against officials if negligence is established. He announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims. “The injured are out of danger. I have instructed doctors to provide medical treatment free of cost,” he said.”If the wall was in a dilapidated condition, why did the engineers ignore its state? Construction is going on inside the hospital campus. Sand was dumped near the wall. New Delhi: Supreme Court on Wednesday said if a person’s fundamental right to freedom of religion is held to be superior to the identical right of a group or denomination, it could lead to dangerous consequences and the court was not going to be part of the process for annihilation of a religion. .Bindu Ammini, a lawyer and social activist who was manhandled for attempting to enter Sabarimala after the 2018 SC judgment removed the ban on entry of women in the 10-50 age group, asserted her fundamental right to enter a temple. Indira Jaising, appearing for Bindu and another woman Kanakadurga, said there was no theological bar on women entering any public temple.Appearing before a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh, A Amanullah, Aravind Kumar, A G Masih, P B Varale, R Mahadevan and J Bagchi, advocate Indira Jaising said Bindu did not dispute the ‘naistik brahmachari’ attributes of Ayyappa at Sabarimala, but the custom could not be the ground for violation of her fundamental right to enter the temple.Jaising said that the Indian Constitution was hailed as unique across the world because it gave prominence to individuals’ fundamental rights. “If a woman wants to go into a temple, what legal injury is she causing to anyone? If the court wants to rule the other way round, let it go ahead and do it and the world will be watching how the Supreme Court of India is developing jurisprudence relating to rights of women,” Jaising said.Justice Sundresh disagreed with her line of argument and asked if an individual’s right to freedom of religion under Article 25(1) clashed with that right of a group of devotees or followers of a denomination, whose right should prevail?”How do we enforce individual rights when it violates fundamental rights of others? Article 25(1) right of one cannot be pitted against another. If we agree with your submissions, it will lead to dangerous consequences. If each devotee goes to a common deity and exercises his freedom to worship in a different manner, the consequences will be disastrous for the religion or denomination itself,” he said.Justice Nagarathna agreed with him and said, “It will lead to annihilation of religion, and we do not want to be a part of it. Matters of religion are not a subject on which either the court or the legislature can sit in judgment. It cannot be a matter of debate because it is a matter of conscience.”Justice Amanullah asked whether a practice or custom, which has crystallised over centuries, should be removed by a court to ensure that a person must go into a temple despite knowing that it would hurt the religious feelings of the majority of the followers of the denomination.
