The union FSUI raised concerns around sailor exploitation as their documents were also reportedly seized Seven Indian seafarers allegedly stranded aboard the oil products tanker MV Sea Star 2 at Mina Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi for 11 months have been repatriated, while efforts are under way to bring home the remaining crew members.In a post on X, the Embassy said it “is closely following up with local authorities on the welfare and early repatriation of Indian seafarers stranded aboard SEA STAR 2. Seven seafarers have already been repatriated, and efforts are underway for the safe and early repatriation of the remaining seafarers.”According to FSUI, the remaining seafarers have not received wages for five months. US singer Mary Millben calls out New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani for opposing Mohan Bhagwat’s visit US singer Mary Millben, who performed India’s national anthem during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States in June 2023, on Tuesday (local time) criticised New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani over his opposition to an upcoming event by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in the city.Mamdani has been critical of India’s ruling BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The RSS is the BJP’s ideological mentor.Taking to X, Millben said the mayor and other “socialist nuts” oppose Bhagwat’s programme solely because of their opposition to PM Modi and the BJP.“Given these nuts subscribe to the ideology of socialism, they don’t understand capitalism. MSG doesn’t answer to socialist rants. They answer to capitalism. And thus this event will go on because of it,” she wrote.She further challenged Mamdani and his “choir of socialists” to rent the iconic Madison Square Garden (MSG), where Bhagwat’s event is scheduled to be held, and organise their own rally for their “anti-Modi foolishness.”The US singer also expressed support for the central theme of the event while calling for constructive dialogue: “Side note, I like the rally title. ‘Oneness’. We are ONE family. I hope this rally includes meaningful dialogue on religious freedom in India,” she noted.Millben’s comments came after Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim and Indian-American mayor, said on Tuesday that he does not support the planned August 29 event at Madison Square Garden, where Bhagwat is scheduled to address members of the Indian diaspora. CJP leaders; AISA president Neha Bora NEW DELHI: The All India Students’ Association (AISA) on Wednesday announced its support for the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed September 5 protest march in Delhi, demanding the withdrawal of FIRs against students and an inquiry into alleged pellet and bullet firing during an earlier march to Parliament on July 20, which was stopped by police.”We stand with any democratic, secular, progressive agitation or protest that demands accountability from this government… They must fully withdraw all cases. There should be an inquiry into the firing of pellets and bullets, and the government must be fully prepared to take accountability for the same,” AISA president Neha Bora told PTI.”From AISA, we are seeing that this is a matter which still remains unresolved. NEW DELHI: India has called on the international community to work collectively to safeguard critical sea lanes and maritime infrastructure, saying secure and predictable shipping routes are essential to ensure the uninterrupted movement of food, fertilisers, fuel and other vital commodities amid conflicts and growing disruptions to global supply chains.Speaking at a UN Security Council high-level open debate on Tuesday on the theme ‘Food Under Fire: The Security Council’s Role in Mitigating Global and Local Food Crises’, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, said regional conflicts were increasingly producing consequences far beyond the immediate theatres of hostilities.“Secure and predictable maritime trade routes are indispensable for the uninterrupted movement of food, fertilisers, fuel and other essential commodities,” Parvathaneni said, underscoring the need to preserve the safety and freedom of navigation for commercial shipping in accordance with international law.The call comes as conflicts and attacks on key maritime routes continue to threaten global food and energy supplies. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Council that the Strait of Hormuz carries around a fifth of global oil supplies and a third of global fertiliser trade.“Restrictions and closures have driven up commodity prices, and made availability plummet. And attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea are further threatening supply chains for food and other commodities,” Guterres said.Parvathaneni warned that disruptions to commercial shipping during conflicts could have cascading effects well beyond the affected region, with food-importing developing countries and humanitarian operations bearing a disproportionate burden.“The international community must therefore work collectively to safeguard critical sea lanes and maritime infrastructure, while ensuring that legitimate commercial trade and humanitarian shipments are able to proceed without undue impediment,” he said.India said the immediate priority for the Security Council should be to reduce the humanitarian consequences of conflicts by facilitating safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access, supporting de-confliction arrangements where appropriate and ensuring that Council measures, including sanctions regimes, do not inadvertently obstruct humanitarian assistance or legitimate food and agricultural trade.Parvathaneni also called for timely assessments of disruptions to critical supply chains covering food, fertiliser, fuel and humanitarian logistics, drawing on the expertise of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme and other relevant agencies.“Such assessments must remain objective, evidence-based and free from politicisation,” he said.The Indian envoy said food insecurity was fundamentally a consequence of conflict, political instability and underdevelopment, rather than their root cause.
